Bharat Mata row: Kerala Cabinet urges governor to use only national flag, symbol for Raj Bhavan events
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as Governor Rajendra Arlekar defended the display of the image of Bharat Mata carrying a saffron flag in events attended by him, the state cabinet has urged him to ensure that nothing other than the national flag and national symbol are displayed during official events conducted at the Raj Bhavan.
Reminding the governor that displaying any other flag or symbol amounted to insulting the national flag and symbol, the cabinet urged him to issue the necessary directions to Raj Bhavan officials. In a letter to the governor, the state cabinet touched upon the circumstances leading to the adoption of the national flag and national symbol and the Constituent Assembly debates and a resolution on what the national flag should embody.
The cabinet referred to the speeches made by Jawaharlal Nehru and Sarojini Naidu during the Constituent Assembly debates on the national flag. While Nehru had said that there were no communal or social considerations behind adoption of the tricolour as the national flag, Naidu had maintained that only the national flag should represent the country in public places or official programmes.
Notably, the governor's letter to the chief minister on the issue had also mentioned the Constituent Assembly debates. 'When the Constituent Assembly adopted Vande Mataram as the National Song on January 24, 1950, the idea of Mother India received a constitutional mandate. The concept of Bharat Mata or Bharathamba evolved much before Independence and lives in the hearts of every Indian,' the governor had told the CM.
Meanwhile, the controversy over the display of the image refused to die down. In the wake of the Raj Bhavan seeking a report on the incident, the VC has demanded an explanation from the registrar. On Thursday, the registrar urged the police to lodge a case against the organisers for continuing with the event even after permission for it was denied.

Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, speaking with a smile, said: 'I brought gajar ka halwa and aamras with me… it's not just about taste, it's a piece of home and memories.' 'Main gajar ka halwa aur aamras lekar aaya hoon… yeh sirf swaad nahi, yeh ghar ki yaadon ka ek hissa hai,' Captain Shukla said in Hindi. CM rejects governor's claim of disrespect by education minister
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan rejected governor Rajendra Arlekar 's claim that general education minister V Sivankutty showed disrespect to him by staging a walkout from Raj Bhavan in the middle of an official function. The chief minister conveyed his opinion to the governor in a reply to the latter's letter, accusing Sivankutty of being disrespectful to him. In his letter sent to Raj Bhavan on Friday, Vijayan stated that the minister had no plans to show disrespect. Sivankutty behaved in a manner befitting a minister when he encountered non-constitutional flags and symbols at an official event. This was the duty of the minister, who is bound to show respect to the Constitution, said the chief minister. Vijayan also stated that only national symbols and flags should be used in official and ceremonial events organised at Raj Bhavan. This is the second time govt expressed disagreement with the governor regarding the use of Bharat Mata posters, generally used by RSS.

Resolve to make India a world leader by 2047: Amit Shah
Godhra/Gandhinagar: Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah on Saturday called upon India's youth to resolve to make the country a global leader by 2047, marking 100 years of independence. Speaking via video link at a development programme for Shri Govind Guru University in Vinzol near Godhra, Shah emphasized national pride and historical legacy. Paying tribute to tribal freedom fighter Govind Guru, Shah said, "Around 1,512 tribal brothers and sisters were martyred in that struggle against the British, and Mangadh (Gujarat) became an important place in the history of India's fight for independence." He added, "Our youth and children should make a resolution of creating an India where it attains the first position in every field in the world when the country celebrates the centenary of its independence. " Shah highlighted that the idea of Govind Guru University was conceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat CM.
