Malaysia, Ghana explore kenaf industry collaboration

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has expressed strong commitment to enhancing international cooperation in sustainable agricommodities through a new partnership with Ghana, with a focus on developing the kenaf industry.
Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said this followed the official visit of Ghana's Volta Regional Minister James Gunu to the Plantation and Commodities Ministry.
"Malaysia values this opportunity to share our experience in developing kenaf, a sustainable fibre crop introduced in 2010 as an alternative to tobacco," Johari said in a Facebook post today.
"Under the National Agricommodity Policy 2021–2030 (DAKN2030), kenaf is recognised as a high-impact commodity aligned with our circular economy and green development goals," he added.
Though still in its early stages, Johari said the kenaf industry holds strong potential across key sectors such as biocomposites, construction, pulp and paper, and automotive manufacturing.
He noted that through the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board (NKTB), the ministry is implementing comprehensive strategies to strengthen every stage of the value chain, from cultivation to market access.
"We sincerely appreciate Ghana's keen interest in Malaysia's kenaf journey, and we look forward to deeper collaboration in promoting sustainable and innovation-driven agricommodities for the benefit of both nations," he said.

Johari: RM1.4b over five years to replant ageing oil palm trees

JOHOR BARU: Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the government is expected to allocate RM1.4 billion over the next five years to support smallholders in replanting ageing oil palm trees. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said today that the initiative aligns with the government's goal of strengthening Malaysia's position as the world's second-largest palm oil producer. "The parliamentary debate on the 13MP begins tomorrow, and we expect valuable feedback from members of parliament." Johari added that the ministry is making a strong push to assist smallholders with replanting. He said about RM1.4 billion will be required over five years — not annually — to encourage smallholders to rejuvenate aging plantations with higher-yielding varieties. He said this after officiating the Umno Johor Baru conference here, accompanied by division chief Datuk Yahya Jaafar. He was responding to questions about the 13MP, which was tabled in Parliament on Thursday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. While tabling the 13MP, Anwar reaffirmed the government's resolve to revitalise strategic sectors, including agricultural commodities, the halal industry, and Islamic finance, by boosting productivity in palm oil, rubber, and cocoa through modern technologies such as mechanisation, automation, robotics and targeted R&D. Johari, who also serves as the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, said an aggressive replanting initiative would boost Malaysia's export potential and strengthen its global market share. "Malaysia's commodity exports stand at about RM115 billion, and this replanting initiative is expected to contribute to our export growth. "If we can upgrade and replant large areas of ageing oil palm trees, it will boost our capacity and competitiveness in the global palm oil market."

MADANI govt boosts farmers, breeders & fishermen welfare

KUALA LUMPUR: The Madani government remains committed to uplifting farmers, breeders, and fishermen through strategic support and empowerment, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced. Highlighting their pivotal role in national food security, he stressed the need for federal-state synergy to advance modern agriculture and the blue economy. 'I emphasised the need for strong synergy between the Federal Government, state governments and relevant agencies in strategically focusing on the development of the modern agricultural sector and the blue economy for the people's wellbeing and environmental sustainability,' Anwar said in a Facebook post. Reflecting on his tenure as Agriculture Minister four decades ago, he noted the enduring resilience of these groups. 'That experience shaped a deep understanding of the hardship and resilience of farmers, breeders and fishermen who serve as the backbone of national food security.' Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government aims to enhance agrofood productivity and rural competitiveness. Anwar, also Finance Minister, added, 'The MADANI Government is committed to ensuring that every agricultural policy, programme and aid initiative is implemented comprehensively and effectively.' - Bernama
