San Juan County wildfire grows to 7,200 acres, remains 0% contained, fire officials say
The fire started Thursday on private property in the La Sal area — a small community located between Moab and Monticello — quickly growing in size. Fire behavior has been erratic over the past couple of days, with shifting winds pushing flames into forested areas, according to a Saturday update from state fire officials at Utah Fire Info.
Evacuations remain in effect for residents within 5 miles of the wildfire, or from Upper 2 Mile Road to the Utah-Colorado border, according to the update. The fire remains 0% contained Saturday afternoon, with teams focusing on protecting structures, fire officials said.
A briefing was held Saturday morning with a Great Basin Incident Management Team, which will assume command on Sunday, the update states. Fire acreage is expected to be updated again Friday evening, officials said.
The cause of the fire remained undetermined Saturday.

Firefighters quell wildfires in southern France

As a precautionary measure, 200 firefighters spent the night in the area to douse the embers and ensure the blaze was not rekindled. On 8 July, a wildfire started after a car caught fire on the side of the road just outside Marseille. Nearly 100 buildings were damaged or destroyed as the fire raged across 750 hectares between Les Pennes-Mirabeau and Marseille. It sent plumes of acrid smoke billowing into the sky, causing Marseille airport to close its runways and cancel around a dozen flights.

Air quality warnings issued in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, as wildfire smoke lingers
Air quality warnings remain in effect for parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba as wildfire smoke continues to linger over the region. Environment Canada says the northwestern Saskatchewan community of Buffalo Narrows will see some of the poorest conditions, with the air quality health Index hitting the "very high risk" rating of over 10 throughout Friday and into Saturday. The city of Prince Albert, Sask., is also affected by the smoky air, where Environment Canada says the index is also expected to be at over 10 throughout Friday. In northwestern Manitoba, Environment Canada says the Flin Flon area is also under warning, with the index forecasted to drop from high risk to moderate risk by Saturday. The agency says smoke is expected to cause reduced visibility and poor air quality throughout the rest of the week. Hand sanitizer fire in South LA burns through the night
Amid concerns that water would only worsen the situation, Los Angeles firefighters allowed pallets full of hand sanitizers to burn throughout Thursday night. The fire started at about 5 p.m. in a storage lot along the 5400 block of South Avalon Boulevard. The Los Angeles Fire Department opted for a controlled burn because of the high-alcohol content of the hand sanitizer. "Water cannot be used safely in these conditions, as alcohol can float on water and spread flames. Crews are instead focused on protecting nearby structures and limiting environmental impact from runoff," an LAFD spokesperson said. Firefighters built sand dams to protect storm drains and requested large quantities of foam to suppress flames. The LAFD believes the fire will continue to burn throughout most of the night. It will rotate about 40 firefighters to monitor the flames. No one was injured in the fire, according to LAFD. Investigators have not determined what caused the fire.
