State of the Game: ‘Marvel: Crisis Protocol'

Geek Dad13-06-2025

I've made no bones about the fact that I'm a big Marvel fan. From growing up with Marvel Comics in the 80's, to enjoying the X-Men Animated series in the 90's, to the MCU, you can always 'Make Mine Marvel.' So it's no surprise that one of my earliest reviews at GeekDad was my review of the then-new Marvel: Crisis Protocol miniatures skirmish game from Atomic Mass Games. Fellow contributor Robin Brooks also chronicled his first game with MCP here on GeekDad in 2022.
Since that first review, Atomic Mass Games has been going strong with releases for Marvel: Crisis Protocol . Thanks to our friends at Atomic Mass Games, I recently received a few of the newer kits to share with our readers. What Is Marvel: Crisis Protocol ?
Marvel: Crisis Protocol is a miniatures skirmish game for 2 players, ages 14 and up, and takes about 90-120 minutes to play. The easiest way to get into the game is with the current starter box, Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Earth's Mightiest CORE Set. This box retails for $119.99, and is available on Amazon or at various games stores. It basically is a completely reworked version of the original core box, containing new miniatures and terrain, and different versions of the same characters from the core set.
If you still want the original core set, that is still available and retails for $99.99. As with the Earth's Mightiest CORE Set, the original core set is available on Amazon and at your local games stores.
Even though both core sets contain rulebooks, the rules are also available online, and are periodically updated when changes are made to the game. Everything Atomic Mass Games sent over. Image by Paul Benson. Catching Up With Marvel: Crisis Protocol
Atomic Mass Games sent over a variety of character packs to take a look at, as well as a piece of terrain. I assembled all of the kits, though didn't have time to paint them (AMG also sent along a big box of Star Wars: Shatterpoint squad packs, which I'll be covering in future articles). While most Character Packs in Marvel: Crisis Protocol tend to contain one or two characters, as the game has matured, some older characters are getting repackaged into larger boxes containing 4 characters of the same affiliation. In this case, these 4 figures are all part of the Inhumans affiliation. (Characters that share an affiliation will often get bonus abilities when they team up together).
Here's a look at everything inside the box: Everything in the Inhumans Royal Court box. Image by Paul Benson.
Here's a look at the 'healthy' side of the Stat Cards. As you can see, Maximus has a leadership ability, 'Call Me Maximus the Magnificent', which can only be used if other characters in his squad share his affiliation. As all of the characters in this box have the 'Inhumans' affiliation, he's good to go! A look at the Inhumans' various stats and abilities. Image by Paul Benson.
Like all MCP Stat cards, when a character takes a certain amount of damage, they become injured and you flip their card to the 'injured' side. The characters then become stronger, but if they take too much damage, they'll be knocked out and removed from the game. The 'injured' side of the Inhumans stat cards. Image by Paul Benson.
The Character Pack also comes with 6 Team Tactics cards, which are one-shot abilities chosen when you build your roster for a game. There are 4 affiliated cards, and 2 unaffiliated. The included Team Tactics cards. Image by Paul Benson.

Yes, Marvel: Crisis Protocol already had a Hulk, but the Immortal Hulk is meaner, and greener. The Immortal Hulk box. Image by Paul Benson.

The Immortal Hulk is not simply a new sculpt for the Hulk, but he actually has different abilities and stats. Here is the original Hulk's Stat card: The OG Hulk from 2019. Image by Atomic Mass Games.
And here is the Immortal Hulk's card: Immortal Hulk smash! Image by Atomic Mass Games.
As you can see, there are many differences between the two characters. For your games, you could choose to have both Hulks in your 10-character roster, but when you build your squad, you can only use one of them.
The Immortal Hulk Character Pack also comes with 2 Team Tactics cards, both unaffiliated: Immortal Hulk's Team Tactics cards. Image by Paul Benson.

One of Marvel's more powerful villains is the demonic Mephisto. The Mephisto Character Pack. Image by Paul Benson.

Like many of the newer releases, Mephisto comes with Stat cards and Team Tactics cards in multiple languages. This simplifies production as Atomic Mass Games can use just one sku for multiple countries. Mi nombre es Mefisto. Image by Paul Benson.

Finally, Atomic Mass Games sent me a beautiful terrain piece. Terrain in any miniatures game is important, but in Marvel: Crisis Protocol, it is doubly so as characters can interact with buildings in various ways, including, if they're strong enough, tossing them at other characters! The large box for the Tomb of Dracula. Image by Paul Benson.
As this is a terrain piece, the box consists primarily of sprues: All the parts needed to assemble the Tomb of Dracula. Image by Paul Benson.
The one other addition to the box is two One-Shot cards. These can be used optionally in a game to add flavor to the match. The Tomb of Dracula One-Shot cards. Image by Paul Benson.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and I think you can tell from the photos in this article just how detailed and dynamic the miniatures and terrain are. While the models looked great in the original core box, the sculptors have definitely stepped up their game since then. This is especially evident when you compare the sculpts from the newer Earth's Mightiest CORE set to the original core set, as both sets have different versions of the same characters. Assembly of the models is quite easy, with minimal mold line cleanup, and no fussy little bits to fumble with as with the original Baron Zemo model.
Just looking at the models makes me want to get a game together, and examining each character's abilities definitely makes the gamer in me want to take them for a test drive. Part of the fun of a game like this is in building your roster, and figuring out which characters will work best with each other. And can we talk about the Tomb of Dracula? That terrain piece is stunning. My only regret is that Atomic Mass Games didn't send along the Monsters Unleashed Character Pack to go with it, but they had a very good reason: that item is so popular right now, that it's currently sold out! The Monsters Unleashed Character Pack figures. Image by Atomic Mass Games.
Overall, I think things are very bright for Marvel: Crisis Protocol moving forward. There's still a deep well of untapped characters from Marvel Comics, and Atomic Mass Games has a planned a steady release of them. At this year's Adepticon convention, they announced several products that extend well into 2026, including some new Starter Packs that will each have an entire 10-character affiliation roster included right in one box. In the immediate future, I'm really looking forward to dynamic releases like the Phoenix & Phoenix Unleashed Character Pack. If you've never played Marvel: Crisis Protocol, or used to play and put it on hold, this is a great time to get into the game.

In my new video, I remind him that his Snoop Dogg video includes the lyrics: 'Set the mood, spoon and groom. … I can get you high.' He replies, 'Realizing that this stuff has a negative effect on culture … is something that became present to me when I became a dad.' But I'm skeptical about his new movie, The War on Children . Starbuck says it 'covers everything kids have faced today in the West, from gender ideology to the sort of communist mentality that's entered our schools, to the depression crisis and the mental health crisis.' His movie was banned on Amazon Prime. He was banned by TikTok. 'One reason they might have banned you,' I suggest, 'is you say, 'TikTok intentionally confuses kids about their gender.'' 'TikTok's algorithm has fed young children in this country gender transition content that confuses them about who they are,' he replies. 'This is a social contagion.' But when I signed up for TikTok, the algorithm just gave me short videos I find fun to watch — beach volleyball, emotional family reunions, kittens playing … This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Starbuck says young people get different feeds. 'If the sole information they have about you is you're a teenager and interested in pop culture, that's where they orient you.' But does TikTok intentionally confuse kids about their gender? 'Transitions rarely happen,' I point out. '0.08% of kids get diagnosed with gender dysphoria. If TikTok is converting them, they're not doing a very good job.' 'You're talking about thousands and thousands of kids who get the medical procedures,' he replies. 'It's certainly, in many areas, way beyond the number that you stated. This is a social contagion. Look at the whole area surrounding UC Davis in California in the public schools; the number of kids who believe they're some form of LGBTQ+ is well over 20%.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. I ask him, 'Aren't there some people who genuinely feel like they're born in the wrong body?' 'They can believe it all day long. That's fine. It doesn't make it the truth. I'm not going to pretend to affirm something that's not true … I would be doing a disservice by pretending that every delusion is actually real, just because it might make somebody happy.' 'But it does make some people happy,' I say. 'Sure, and if you're an adult and you make a set of decisions I disagree with, that's your prerogative. Knock yourself out. But once you cross a line and you start doing this to children who don't have informed consent, don't understand what they're actually doing and what they're signing up for, I think there's no forgiveness.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. While Starbuck and I don't entirely agree on this issue, I'm glad we can talk about it. Now, you can look for yourself — The War on Children is officially unbanned. What changed Amazon's mind? 'The politics have changed,' says Starbuck. 'It's back on Amazon Prime now and I'm unbanned at TikTok … I was right when I warned about the idea of modern communism, where companies act as a proxy for the government, because these things all occurred when the Democrats were in power. Now we're in a new time period where the people on my side are in power. Now these companies are tripping over themselves to go and say, 'We're not banning you. We didn't mean it … ' We need companies to not be prisoners to political ideologies and instead just behave like they're actual companies.' He's right about that. Key moments from the closing arguments at Sean ‘Diddy' Combs' sex trafficking trial

Music mogul and entrepreneur Sean "Diddy" Combs arrives at the Billboard Music Awards, May 15, 2022, in Las Vegas. (Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP) NEW YORK — A jury will begin deliberations on Monday over the fate of Sean 'Diddy' Combs after hearing wildly differing views from prosecutors and a defense lawyer over whether he engaged in sex trafficking for two decades. Two prosecutors insisted that he had coerced, threatened and sometimes viciously forced two ex-girlfriends to have sex with male sex workers to satisfy his sexual pleasure. They cited multiple acts of violence he carried out against them as proof that they had no say. A defense lawyer then mocked the government's closing argument and warned that prosecutors were employing a novel approach to sex crimes that risked turning the swinger lifestyle that Combs and his girlfriends enjoyed into potential crimes for all Americans. Combs, 55, the founder of Bad Boy Entertainment, has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges in the trial, which continues Monday when the judge will read instructions on the law to jurors before they begin deliberations. Here are key moments from closing argument on Thursday and Friday: Prosecutors showed they weren't withdrawing claims against Combs Prosecutors triggered headlines last week that they had backed off or eliminated claims of arson and kidnapping against Combs when they said they were removing instructions on the law regarding them to be given jurors on Monday in response to the judge's request to streamline the case for the jury. 'The Government is no longer planning to proceed on these theories of liability so instructions are no longer necessary,' prosecutors wrote in a letter to the judge. But when Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik launched closings on Thursday, she gave the allegations of arson and kidnapping a starring role in her first sentences, naming them before any others. 'Over the last several weeks, you've learned a lot about Sean Combs. He's the leader of a criminal enterprise. He doesn't take no for an answer. And now you know about many crimes the defendant committed with members of his enterprise: Kidnapping of one of the defendant's employees; arson by trying to blow up a car; forced labor, including of an employee the defendant repeatedly sexually assaulted; bribery of a security officer to keep damning evidence against the defendant buried; and of course, the brutal crimes at the heart of this case — sex trafficking,' she said. The arson claim stemmed from evidence that Slavik said showed Combs was behind the firebombing of rapper Kid Cudi's Porsche in 2012. The kidnapping allegation also related to Cudi. Slavik said Combs kidnapped an employee to join him when he broke into Cudi's home after learning the rapper was dating his girlfriend. A defense lawyer strikes back, belittling government's case Attorney Marc Agnifilo in an at-times folksy presentation spared few theatrics in mocking the government's case against Combs as overreach, saying hundreds of agents poured into Combs' residences in Miami and Los Angeles to seize hundreds of bottles of baby oil and Astroglide lubricant. 'I guess it's all worth it because they found the Astroglide. They found it in boxes, boxes of Astroglide taken off the streets. Whew, I feel better already,' he said, before adding: 'The streets of America are safe from the Astroglide!' From the start, Agnifilo tried to portray prosecutors as unjustly targeting Combs after a former girlfriend of nearly 11 years — Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura — sued him in November 2023. She testified for four days in the trial's first week. The lawsuit was settled for $20 million the next day but she touched off a criminal probe with her allegations of being subjected to hundreds of drug-fueled 'freak-offs' in which she alleged she was forced to perform sexually for days with male sex workers while Combs watched, filmed and directed the action. A woman who testified under the pseudonym 'Jane' also testified during the trial that she experienced 'hotel nights' similar to 'freak-off' in a relationship with Combs from 2021 until his arrest. Agnifilo maintained the prosecution was an unjust attack on a prominent and wildly successful Black entrepreneur. 'They took Astroglide and they took baby oil, and that ends up being the evidence in this case, because his businesses are outstanding. There's nothing about the businesses to find. There's nothing about the businesses to make into a criminal case,' he said. Defense personalizes the case for jurors, calling it attack on 'your bedroom' Agnifilo tried to cast the case for the jury as an attack on everyone's bedroom and the secrets of one's sex life. 'They go into the man's bedroom. They go into the man's most private life. Where is the crime scene? The crime scene is your private sex life. That's the crime scene,' he said as he stood before jurors, who were largely expressionless as they took occasional notes and watched the closings. The lawyer said it was not uncommon that Combs liked to film sexual events with his girlfriends, calling it 'sort of typical, you know, homemade porn' and adding that 'I don't think by any stretch of the imagination this is the only man in America making homemade porn.' Still, he said, investigators 'take yellow crime scene tape, figuratively, and they wrap it around his bedroom. Crime scene — your bedroom, your hotel rooms, where you go with your girlfriends. Crime scenes. A lot of yellow tape.' Then, he gave a nod to the 50th anniversary of the movie 'Jaws,' resurrecting a classic line from Hollywood history when he said: 'We need a bigger roll of crime scene tape, because that's just not going to be enough.' Judge agrees defense went too far saying prosecutors targeted Combs Just after Agnifilo told jurors that it 'takes a lot of courage to acquit,' he ripped the government's case a final time in stark terms, saying the trial was 'very different' from any other trial. 'I think that the evidence shows, and you can conclude, that the government targeted Sean Combs,' he said, noting that nobody complained to the government to instigate a probe, but investigators instead began their work a day after Cassie filed her lawsuit. After the jury left the room at the conclusion of Agnifilo's four-hour summation, his statement about targeting drew an outcry from the prosecutor, Slavik. When the jury returned, Judge Judge Arun Subramanian noted the remark Agnifilo had made about targeting Combs and told jurors that 'the decision of the government to investigate an individual or the decision of a grand jury to indict an individual is none of your concern.' In rebuttal, a prosecutor tells jurors that Combs is 'not a god' Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey got the final word with a rebuttal presentation to jurors, telling them: 'The defendant is not a god.' She said that Combs in his mind 'was untouchable.' She noted that one former personal assistant even described him as a 'god among men.' 'For 20 years, the defendant got away with his crimes. That ends in this courtroom,' she said. 'He is a person. And in this courtroom, he stands equal before the law. Overwhelming evidence proves his guilt. It is time to hold him accountable. Find him guilty.' Michael R. Sisak and Larry Neumeister, The Associated Press
