Indian settlements hoping for access to traditional village benefits
A PROPOSAL will be submitted to the Selangor government to gazette several Indian settlements as traditional villages to give them access to certain benefits.
Five to 10 settlements have been identified, including in areas such as Klang and Kuala Selangor under the proposal by assemblymen Rajiv Rishyakaran (Bukit Gasing), Preakas Sampunathan (Kota Kemuning) and Gunaraj George (Sentosa).
Rajiv said there were more than 300 traditional villages in Selangor that were eligible for allocations from the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.
He said traditional villages were managed by a Village Community Management Council (MPKK) and led by a village chief.
'The allocations provided by the ministry must be applied for through MPKK.
'However, these Indian settlements, which mostly consist of private lots, don't qualify as they are either not part of a bigger group or have set up residents associations.
'But there is a dire need for better infrastructure such as road and drainage at these places.'
Rajiv said this during a press conference along with the other two assemblymen on the sidelines of the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam.
On a separate matter, Rajiv said there was a need for Tamil-speaking officers at state-level to explain the various government programmes available to the B40 community.
He said there had been numerous complaints from the Indian community about the lack of access to state programmes, such as affordable housing, microcredit schemes as well as technical and vocational education and training.
'Some Indians struggle to understand the information provided due to their limited proficiency in Malay.
'They need assistance to understand the programmes and to complete the application forms.
'While we do assist individuals who come to our service centres, such support should be made available at state-level to ensure a wider reach,' he said.
He said Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was verbally informed about the proposal, and gave an assurance that he would look into the matter.

Behind Prison Walls: A Daughter's Love Marks Najib's 72nd Birthday
Subscribe to our FREE Today marks a milestone that would typically call for family gatherings, birthday cake, and celebration. Instead, Datuk Seri Najib Razak is spending his 72nd birthday behind the walls of Kajang Prison – but his daughter's touching tribute on social media proves that love knows no barriers. As the clock struck another year for the former Prime Minister, his daughter Yana Najib took to Facebook with a message that cut straight to the heart. She opened with a quote from former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, that seemed to capture everything: 'A brave man is not one who is not afraid but one who conquers his fears.' The timing wasn't coincidental. Today, 23 July, 2025, Najib turns 72 – a birthday that marks his third consecutive year celebrating behind bars, and his daughter wasn't about to let it pass unnoticed. Three Years of Separated Birthdays 'Happy birthday Daddy,' Yana wrote in Malay, her words carrying the weight of years of separation. May Allah SWT grant you strength and good health for Daddy. The reality she acknowledges is stark: 'We haven't been able to celebrate with Daddy for 3 years, separated from us.' Yet her message carries no trace of bitterness, only hope wrapped in faith: 'May all matters be made easy and God willing, we can be together again in the near future.' Yana's heartfelt tribute sparked a wave of solidarity across social media, as Najib's supporters joined in marking his 72nd birthday. Facebook and other platforms are filled with nostalgic posts from loyalists sharing fond memories of better times – photos from political rallies, screenshots of his achievements as Prime Minister, and throwback images of him with family during happier occasions. Among the throwback moments was a particularly endearing video clip showing Najib singing Cliff Richard's 1961 classic 'The Young Ones' – a moment that captured a lighter, more personal side of the former Prime Minister that many supporters fondly remember. Finding Light in Dark Times Yana's post reads like poetry born from pain: 'A calm heart behind the silence. A ray of hope illuminating the path in adversity. Surely there is wisdom behind every trial. More wise, patient and kind than before.' These aren't just words – they're a daughter's way of making sense of a situation that has redefined her family's reality since 23 August, 2022, when Najib began serving his sentence for the Najib has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. Today's birthday carries particular significance because it brings the family closer to potential reunion. The Pardons Board's February 2024 decision to That's just over three years away, making today's 72nd birthday a marker on a countdown that his family clearly holds dear. At the same time, the Attorney General confirmed the existence of a royal order that is crucial for Najib's Beyond Politics, Pure Love In a political landscape often defined by division and rhetoric, Yana's birthday message stands apart. Her hashtags #bossku and #dsn (Datuk Seri Najib) show unwavering support, but her words transcend politics entirely. This is simply a daughter honouring her father on his birthday, separated by circumstances but united by unbreakable bonds. The Mandela quote she chose resonates deeply – a reminder that even leaders who've faced imprisonment can emerge with wisdom and strength. As Najib marks his 72nd year today, his daughter's message suggests she sees this chapter not as an ending, but as a test of character that will ultimately reveal more profound truths. Cash aid and other measures shows Govt's commitment, says Ramanan
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement of cash aid for all Malaysians demonstrates the Madani government's commitment to supporting people of all races, religions, and backgrounds, says Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. He stated that, alongside the cash aid, major measures such as targeted subsidies, cost of living reduction initiatives, and record high investments reflect the government's concern for all levels of society, including the Indian community. "Nandri PM (Thank you PM). This is another very important and timely announcement. The one-off RM100 Sara Assistance via MyKad to all citizens aged 18 and above, along with the increased allocation for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) to RM15bil in 2025, is evidence of the government's commitment to providing comprehensive assistance," he said in a statement. Ramanan added that the implementation of the Sejahtera Madani initiative, involving cooperation between the government and the corporate sector, offers new hope in addressing extreme poverty, particularly among urban and rural communities of all races. He also praised the government as brave and responsible for postponing toll rate increases, lowering electricity bills for most users, and expediting appointments for more than 4,000 job vacancies in the healthcare sector, including contract doctors. "The increase in the minimum wage to RM1,700 from August shows the government's determination to defend workers' rights. This has a significant impact, especially on youth and industrial workers," said Ramanan. Ramanan, who is also the Vice President of PKR, commended the government's efforts in attracting investments amounting to RM384bil last year, the highest in the country's history. He noted the country's rise to 23rd place in the 2025 World Competitiveness Index as another significant achievement. He emphasized that all these efforts manifest the Madani government's inclusive and fair approach to ensuring shared prosperity. "The Madani government works for the people of Malaysia based on concern and justice for all Malays, Chinese, Indians, Sabahans, and Sarawakians," he said. Ramanan urged the people to continue supporting the government's reform agenda, focusing on the people's well-being, economic sustainability, and national unity.

India, UK to sign free trade deal during Modi's visit, cut tariffs on whisky, garments
LONDON: India and Britain will sign a free trade agreement on Thursday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's UK visit, officials said, with New Delhi to ease tariffs on British whisky, cars and some food items, and the UK offering duty-free access to Indian textiles and electric vehicles. The pact, concluded in May after three years of stop-start talks, should boost bilateral trade by removing numerous barriers and granting each country greater market access to the other. It will take effect after the British parliament and India's federal cabinet approve it, likely within a year. "This is a significant agreement," Vikram Misri, India's foreign secretary, told reporters on Tuesday, adding that legal vetting of the deal was near completion ahead of Modi's four-day trip to the UK and Maldives. Trade minister Piyush Goyal will accompany Modi for the formal signing, a commerce ministry official said. This will be Modi's fourth visit to the UK since he took office in 2014. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss trade, energy, security, health and education issues, and also hold talks with business leaders. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $55 billion in 2023/24, while the UK has become India's sixth-largest investor, with cumulative investments of nearly $36 billion, Misri said. Around 1,000 Indian companies operate in the UK, employing 100,000 people, and they have invested about $20 billion there, he added. Under the trade agreement, tariffs on Scotch whisky will drop to 75 per cent from 150 per cent immediately, and then slide to 40 per cent over the next decade, according to the British government, and on cars, India will cut duties to 10 per cent from 100 per cent under a quota system that will be gradually liberalised. In return, Indian manufacturers are expected to gain access to the UK market for electric and hybrid vehicles, also under a quota system, Indian commerce ministry officials said. The ministry has said 99 per cent of Indian exports to Britain would benefit from zero duties under the deal, including textiles, while Britain will see reductions on 90 per cent of its tariff lines. "The UK is an important market for Indian exporters," said Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, adding that the trade pact will boost bilateral trade and provide access for Indian sectors such as textiles, footwear, marine and engineering products. — REUTERS
