American 'mind blown' over key difference after visiting Tesco store in UK

Daily Mirror14-06-2025
American mum Paige Wester, who is now living in England, has gone viral after demonstrating just how different the US and UK are when it comes to certain supermarket items
An American mum residing in the UK was left utterly baffled after comparing a Tesco store to supermarkets in the US.
Across the pond, you'll find super-sized bottles of milk, an insane range of crisp (or should we say chips?!) flavours - and even entire aisles dedicated to ranch dressing. For us Brits, roaming around a Walmart and stacking up on never-seen-before sweets and chocolates is actually pretty fun, and perhaps it's the same for Americans shopping at Tesco or Sainbsury's for the first-ever time.

Paige Wester, who is a mum to a toddler and expecting her second child, recently took to TikTok to reveal one key difference she spotted in supermarkets since arriving in England. And no, it isn't Yorkshire Tea...

"I will never get over how inexpensive baby items are here," the mum said in the now-viral video. "Let me just show you how cheap baby products actually are."
Paige compares a pack of 60 Tesco-owned nappies (which she refers to as diapers) for £6.50, while a more premium band costs £5.50 for a 44-pack. In the US, a 56-pack of Huggies Little Movers nappies at Walmart costs $28.22 (which works out at around £20.71).
"Like that is so cheap," she added. "Just a single pack of wipes is 55p." Again, in the US a similar product costs around $3 (£2.22) which is more than four times the price. "Now we're going to go to the baby formula because this will actually blow your mind," Paige said, pointing to a large tub of Kendamil formula. "This brand in America I think is like $35 and here it's £12..."
"Now I'm going to show you like toddler snacks, pouches, and all that stuff. I love this Ella's Kitchen brand and for just one pouch it's £1.30. Baby food is just 80p per jar. Let me preface this with the fact that I'm in Tesco right now, which is very similar to an American grocery store - but you can definitely get all of these baby items a lot cheaper somewhere else if you wanted."

Lastly, the mum hailed how children's medicine is 'super cheap' in the UK compared to across the pond. "Calpol is only £3.15," she said. "Obviously some of the 'boujier' brands are a little bit more expensive but it's not bad. A baby should not break the bank - period!"

Taking to the comments section, many Americans were equally baffled at how much cheaper Tesco seemed to be than stores like Walmart. "I just moved here with my British hubby to start a family and just know this was the right decision - it feels so validating," one person hailed.
Another agreed, commenting: "As a Brit I honestly almost cried when I ran out of nappies on my last day in the USA and had to buy them," while a third added: "I couldn't believe when I went to Target and saw a tub of Kendamil was $30."
However, many viewers rightfully pointed out that average salaries in the US tend to be higher than in the UK. According to reports, the median weekly earnings of the nation's 122.1 million full-time wage and salary workers in the US was $1,118 in the third quarter of 2023. In the UK, this was just £682.

Emily Ratajkowski strips fully naked for sizzling nude sunbathing session

EMILY Ratajkowski has stunned fans after stripping fully naked for a sizzling nude sunbathing session. The model and actress, 34, took to Instagram to share a photo dump from moments she enjoyed in July, with the racy nude snapshot nestled among the more PG photos. 4 4 4 In the racy nude photo, Emily could be seen sunning herself on a sun lounger while donning only a red baseball cap which had a quote that read, "take off your clothes". Ditching clothing entirely for the photo, as per the request of her cap, Emily did not don a bra, nor did she wear panties. Covering her breasts with her arms and raising her legs so her private region was covered, Emily was seemingly mindful about what she was showing her fans. With her brunette locks down and tousled, the stunning model looked sleepy as she looked at the camera while someone took the snap. Emily was holding her phone, which had a yellow phone case, and she had a pink child's handbag sitting next to her. Also among the shocking naked photo were several other stunning snapshots of the starlet. One other snap saw Emily pouting for the camera while donning a seriously tiny green bikini. Another then saw her showing off her slender figure in a smart black suit comprised of some pedal pusher trousers and a blazer-style top. TRIP TO THE BIG APPLE Last week, the starlet was out and about in New York to promote her new Netflix show. For the occasion, she wore a stunning blue frock covered in a snakeskin pattern, complete with a plunging neckline cut-out at the front. She also appeared on TODAY and chatted to Jenna Bush Hager about her new Netflix role while in the Big Apple. While on the show, Emily chatted about her role in the new Netflix series Too Much where she plays an influencer named Wendy Jones. Emily does not have the main role in the series, with the leading role of Jessica, played by Megan Stalter. Megan's role of Jessica is a New York workaholic is reeling from a broken relationship. In the series, she takes a job in London and meets Felix, a walking of red flag, but their connection is seemingly undeniable. Emily's character, who is influencer Wendy, then begins dating Jessica's ex-boyfriend. Wendy gets Instagram-stalked by Jessica, who drunkenly breaks into their New York apartment to confront them one night. Emily, who was born in London to American parents and raised in California, has had dated several famous faces. She had a brief romance with Pete Davidson, a potential connection with Brad Pitt, and a reported fling with Eric André. She also had a public kiss with Harry Styles in Tokyo. Emily split from her husband Sebastian Bear-McClard in 2022. They married in February 2018 and welcomed a son, Sylvester Apollo Bear (nicknamed Sly), in March 2021.

Review: I sampled some of the food at Rhyl's Queen's Market

From stone-baked pizzas to dishes inspired by Indian, American, Greek Chinese and Caribbean cuisine, there is plenty to tantalise the tastebuds and satisfy the heartiest of appetites. That's not to mention the ice cream, coffee and cake, donuts, traditional sweets, and much more. Oh, and there's also a pub! Queen's Market in Rhyl Let's get something out of the way before we go on - The Queen's Market is not a market of the sort we might have visited in days gone by. There is no butchered meat, fresh fish, second hand books, clothing, or souvenirs to be had. What it is, however, is a modern food court that have proved popular in places like Chester. And early signs are it will do the same in Rhyl. MORE NEWS: Taxi drivers in Rhyl 'furious' amid wait for fare uplift to take effect Concerns in Prestatyn as 'retrospective' homeless hostel application submitted Fight breaks out on train travelling between Prestatyn & Flint stations The food court in the market is light, although it is always busy with people navigating the market. There are booths on the mezzanine, which are a better option if you don't like the hustle and bustle of the market while enjoying your meal. Queen's Market: Ice cream rolls being made We were a party of three so decided to order from several of the kitchens to sample as many of the cuisines as possible. Now, as a fan of Bob's Burgers, I love a dish with a pun name. At Queen's Market, there are puns aplenty as most of vendors. For our initiation, we chose food from Bad Burgers and Dirty Dogs, Go Greek, and Street Pot. I must preface the rest of this article by saying we visited on the opening day and it was the first time the vendors served the public at the market. I don't think anyone expected how popular the new food court would be from the off, and there were reports of kitchen's running out of food before the day was out. This, and any other teething troubles, I am sure have now been addressed. Queen's Market: Bad Burgers and Dirty Dogs Bad Burgers and Dirty Dogs serves up a range of handmade smash burgers and gourmet hotdogs with a variety of toppings on offer, along with fully loaded fries. It has to be said that, on day one when we were there, there was a lot of feet finding. Queen's Market: Burger The burger and dog we ordered did not arrive particularly quickly, but I am sure the team are firing on all cylinders now. That said, the food was worth the wait. HUNGRY FOR MORE? This might be my favourite restaurant in North Wales! I enjoyed breakfast at what might be Rhyl's friendliest cafe I tried authentic Sri Lankan food in Rhyl - and it was fantastic! The prison/crime themed pub names of the burger and hot dog escape me right now (see what I did there?) but they were hot, fresh and loaded with flavour. With all the variations on the menu, I can see a lot of return custom for this burger joint. Queen's Market: Team members at Street Pot We also tried some of the food from Street Pot, which focuses on authentic Caribbean and USA flavours. Specialties include jerk chicken, curry, rice and peas, and fried plantain. We tried the mac and cheese and jerk chicken leg, which came with two pots of sauce. Queen's Market: Food from Street Pot The mac and cheese was rich, gooey and plentiful. I would have liked bigger portions of sauce, and perhaps something to add crunch or spice to balance the richness of the cheese sauce, but overall, it was a very tasty and filling. Queen's Market: Street Pot The star item from Street Pot, though, was the fresh fruit juice blends, which were equal parts refreshing and delicious. My favourite of the kitchens we sampled was Go Greek. Queen's Market: Food served up at Go Greek Go Greek offers a full range of traditional Greek food, including gyros, souvlaki, halloumi fries, as well as desserts, including the magical orange cake. Queen's Market: Go Greek We shared a gyro and sausage box with a side of halloumi fries with tzatziki. Queen's Market: Box from Go Greek The box was an implosion of different flavours, saltiness, umami, zest, and freshness. The sausage was an added treat, but the mix of meats and salad in the box without it would have still felt like value for money. I have had similar boxes in cities like Manchester, and the food served in Rhyl is their equal at least. We finished our lunchtime dining experience with some cold treats from Pudz Ice Cream Rolls. Queen's Market: Team at Pudz Ice Cream The Pudz team serve freshly made waffles and crepes with a variety of fillings and toppings, as well as their famous fresh milkshakes. Queen's Market: Ice cream The signature treats, however, are ice cream rolls, the preparation of which is a few moments of theatre in itself. We tried Biscoff Blizzard and Magic Mint. The former was very enjoyable, a perfect blend of textures from smooth ice cream to the crumbly crunch of biscuit. Queen's Market: Ice cream The mint, however, was too extreme for our tastes, but I'm sure it will find fans who like their mintiness turned up to the max. Since its launch, there have been a few chops and changes in the vendor line-up, but the market is now at full capacity and welcoming thousands of people through its doors. I will definitely return, as I would very much like to try the delights of Anarkali and Salt & Pepper Box. Queen's Market food court Not to mention, Little Italy Pizza Rhyl who were enjoying a brisk trade on the day I visited. It seemed every other person leaving the market was carrying at least one pizza box. Recently, Little Italy Pizza Rhyl posted: "A special moment for Little Italy Pizza Rhyl this evening, we served our 1,000th customer since being here in the New Queen's Market. Thank you, hope you enjoyed your Take it Cheesy garlic bread on us." Queen's Market: The team at Spill the Beans I will certainly go back to Queen's Market when I'm next in Rhyl. Whether it's for coffee and a donut, a bubble tea, a quick bite for lunch, or something more substantial with friends, it is available at Rhyl's impressive new food court.

Hollywood star SLAMMED for 'sick' comments over Stephen Colbert getting cancelled

Sandra Oh 's strong words against CBS & Paramount raised eyebrows, in the wake of their cancelation of The Late Show hosted by Stephen Colbert. The Killing Eve actress, 54, garnered controversy after making a number of strong comments on Tuesday's edition of the late night series on the network. The Canadian-American star expressed her anger and frustration with Colbert's cancellation this month, after a stellar 10-season run. 'Like probably everyone here and everyone who is so supportive outside wants to say that I am so sorry and saddened and properly outraged for the cancellation of late-night here,' the Emmy-winning actress said. Oh, a two-time Golden Globe winner, said that the decision made on the corporate level - which many say had political undertones - was a game-changer for standards in the U.S. amid President Donald Trump 's second term. 'Not only for yourself and for this entire family who are here, but for what it means, of what it means where we are in our culture and what it means for free speech,' Oh said. Oh, who played Dr. Cristina Yang on ABC's Grey's Anatomy from 2005 until 2014, made strong wishes against the companies that were behind the controversial move. 'So I just want to say, sorry, and also if I can have your hand,' she told the host, 'to CBS and Paramount - a plague on both of your houses.' Colbert said he was 'very grateful' as he wagged his finger, adding, 'I think they've been great partners.' Oh, who portrayed the role of Eve Polastri on the drama Killing Eve, garnered a number of strong responses via social media following the appearance - with some people saying she took things too far. Tony Dokoupil of CBS Mornings said Oh had things pegged wrong in blaming Colbert's show ending on politics, amid a changing economic landscape in late night TV. 'The business is broken,' Dokoupil said. 'And what no one seems to acknowledge is that the politics also changed. 'The business changed and so did the politics, and it got way more one-sided than anything Johnny Carson was ever doing.' (Carson, who died in 2005, famously was one to steer clear of going too far left or right so as not to put off a chunk of his audience.) Dokoupil added, 'I think we should reflect on those changes as well - it's been a big shift culturally in that regard also.' Others applauded her support for the embattled Colbert. Said one user: 'sandra oh wishing a plague on cbs and paramount on steven colbert's show she's everything.' Another added, 'I'm screamingggg she's too funny.'
