‘Give the Hottest 100 to Kyle and Jackie O': Ben Lee's radical plan to save Triple J and Aussie music
First, in 1998, his track Cigarettes Will Kill You came second to The Offspring's Pretty Fly (For A White Guy), while Catch My Disease finished behind Bernard Fanning's Wish You Well in the 2005 poll.
But on the eve of Triple J's voting deadline for the Hottest 100 of Australian songs, with audiences encouraged to vote for their favourite ever homegrown tracks, the musician believes the public broadcaster could be doing more to support local talent.
Posting to Instagram earlier this week, Lee outlined his vision for a new and improved Hottest 100.
'I reckon the Hottest 100 every year should only be eligible to vote for Australian songs,' Lee said. 'There's enough platforms around the world for international music.'
Lee's idea comes after last year's Hottest 100, won by American artist Chappell Roan with Good Luck, Babe. The 2024 poll is the third-lowest-ever showing for local talent, behind the first two in 1993 and 1994 (and equal to 1996).
'It's easy to get complacent and be like, 'Triple J does so much more for Australian music than other commercial stations.' And that's true, but it shouldn't really be judged by the same standards as a commercial enterprise,' Lee said. 'It's like going, 'Medicare does so much for Australian healthcare.' Well, yeah, that's the point.'

Hailey Bieber suffering skin problems due to 'stress'
Hailey Bieber has been suffering from a "flare up" of perioral dermatitis. The Rhode founder has revealed she often gets a bout of the skin rash when she's tired or stressed or has used the wrong products on her skin and she's now shared the "minimal" steps she uses to calm it down. In a post on Instagram, she shared a picture of the rash around her mouth and wrote: "Always flares up when I'm traveling a lot, sleep deprived, hormones, the wrong SPF, new products, stress." Hailey went on to explain how she calms her skin down again using prescription medication and products from her Rhode beauty range. She added: "What I use when I have a flare: so minimal. Rinse my face with water, prescription Azelaic, Hypochlorous acid, Clindamycin, Glazing Milk." Hailey recently sold her Rhode brand to e.l.f. Beauty in a deal estimated to be worth up to $1 billion, but she'll stay on as chief creative officer and head of innovation as well as acting as a consultant to e.l.f. Beauty. The influencer recently insisted the arrangement will help her take the products to a whole new level and expand across the world. She told Glamour magazine: "When you're launching a brand, you're just so focused on what's right in front of you at the time. "And of course, you always have really big dreams and really big goals for it. This is definitely one of those things being realised. I could have never anticipated that it would happen at this exact time ... "I'm super excited ... I'll be the chief creative officer and head of innovation at Rhode and advisor to Elf Beauty. "I feel like at this very moment in time, my vision has not been more clear to me. I want to expand globally, and I have so many more dreams and goals that I want to be realised. And I really believe that Elf is going to help us get there." When asked if there will ever be a "crossover collection" between Rhode and e.l.f. Cosmetics, she replied: "Well, that'll depend on our strategic advisor ... "I'm always open to seeing how we can innovate together. I mean, that is the whole point of all of this. I would say nothing's off the table."

Kate Bosworth and Justin Long 'become parents'
Kate Bosworth and Justin Long have reportedly become parents for the first time. The Blue Crush star and the 47-year-old actor have welcomed a baby girl into the world via a surrogate, sources told the New York Post newspaper's Page Six column. A spokesperson for the couple - who married in 2023, a year after they went public with their romance - has yet to comment on the happy news. Justin previously hinted at planning a family with Kate, 42, in a touching post for her birthday last year. He wrote in part: "One day our kids might ask me 'Dad, why did you write sappy things about Mom on that old Instagram app? The one you won't let us use?' And I'll say 'Well, _____, because there are a lot of poisonous things on the Internet but your mom always inspires me to put good things into the world. Besides, i know reading those old posts touched her and made her smile. And I've been so blessed to have experienced so many fun, wondrous things in this life - things for which I'll never be able to properly express my gratitude - but of all those joys, touching your Mom and making her smile are my favorites.' "They might say 'Ew!' Or 'Why?' "And I'd say 'Because she completed all of your Dad's favorite love songs. Even ones he hadn't thought about since he was a kid. Like the theme song of a TV show he loved called FAMILY TIES. There was a line in that song that went like this "…and there ain't no nothin' we can't love each other through…" And one year, when she was 40, your Mom completed that song too. She's simply the best' (sic)" Just as the couple didn't announce they were expecting a baby, it only emerged they had married when Justin referred to Kate as his wife in May 2023, a month after they had announced their engagement. Speaking on his Life is Short podcast, he recalled his time in Bulgaria working on Barbarian and said: "I was there while I was like really falling in love with my now-wife. "She came to visit and I had never been comfortable with… set visits. I like to separating the relationship... "But, yeah, I loved having her there and we just had the most magical time... It helped me having her there. She'd help me with scenes. It was the best."

‘Obscene' Anne Frank joke horrifies
A Triple J radio host has been blasted for using a derogatory sexual term to describing Holocaust survivor Anne Frank during a stand-up routine at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Concetta Caristo, a co-host of Triple J's breakfast program, was telling the audience she was a 'girls' girl' who could get along with 'any girl in the world, even in history'. 'Put me in a room with Cleopatra and I'd be like, 'Oh my god, I love your eyeliner', or with Anne Frank and I'd say, 'Slut, I have a diary too! Congrats on the book deal',' she said. Concetta Caristo described Holocaust victim Anne Frank as a 'slut'. It was a brutal desecration of the memory of Anne Frank and the one-and-a-half million Jewish children who were murdered in the Holocaust – gassed, shot, starved, erased,' he said in a statement. 'When someone takes a victim of genocide and turns her into an obscene punchline, they don't just mock her – they violate her.' The 15-year-old girl died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945 after she was found hiding in Amsterdam. She gained posthumous fame after the publication of her diary, which shared her personal account of the Holocaust. 'Anne Frank … didn't get a book deal. She got typhus. She got starvation. She got a death sentence in Bergen-Belsen,' Dr Abramovich said. Concetta Caristo, a co-host of Triple J's breakfast program, has been criticised for making a joke about Holocaust victim Anne Frank. Ms Caristo's management told NewsWire she was 'away and not available'. Her social media indicates she is currently travelling, including kayaking in Hamilton Island.
