Arizona State QB Leavitt and Texas Tech LB Rodriguez are preseason Big 12 players of year

Big 12 Football Media Days
started in Frisco, Texas.
There was no preseason poll since the Big 12 discontinued that this year, joining the Big Ten as power conferences without one. The Big 12's move comes a year after then-newcomer Arizona State was picked to finish last in the 16-team league before going on to
win the conference
championship game.
Leavitt completed 216 of 350 passes (61.7%) for 2,885 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions as a redshirt freshman last season when the Sun Devils made the 12-team College Football Playoff in their Big 12 debut. The former Michigan State transfer also ran for 443 yards and five TDs.
Rodriguez was the Big 12's leading tackler with 126 total tackles, and his 77 solo stops were also the most in the league. He had 7 1/2 tackles for loss, and all five of his sacks came in Big 12 play.
Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, a transfer from New Mexico, was selected as the Big 12's top newcomer. He was the Mountain West Conference leader last season with 3,934 total yards last season, 2,768 passing and 1,166 rushing.

Commanders are retiring Hall of Fame receiver Art Monk's No. 81 this season
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders said Tuesday they are retiring Hall of Fame wide receiver Art Monk's No. 81 this season. Monk is the sixth player in franchise history to get that honor, joining Darrell Green, Sammy Baugh, Bobby Mitchell, Sonny Jurgensen and Sean Taylor. The team announced that Monk would have his number retired Nov. 2 when the Commanders host the Seattle Seahawks for a Sunday night game in Week 9. Monk was part of all three of Washington's Super Bowl teams during the organization's glory days and is arguably one of the greatest players in franchise history. He played 14 of his 16 NFL seasons with Washington before finishing his career with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. From his debut in 1980 through 1993, Monk caught 888 passes for 12,026 yards and 65 touchdowns during the regular season and 69 passes for 1,062 yards and seven TDs in the playoffs. An All-Pro pick in 1982 and a three-time Pro Bowl selection, Monk was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. ___

Baseball players' union head hopeful of major leaguers participating in 2028 Olympics
ATLANTA (AP) — Baseball players' union head Tony Clark says plans are moving ahead exploring the possibility of using major leaguers in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and discussions have taken place this week during the All-Star break. 'There's a lot of work that still needs to be done,' he told the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday. 'We do know players are interested in playing, whether it's for the Team USA or any number of other teams around the world. ... There's just a lot of conversation that needs to be had sooner rather than later to see how viable this is, but we're hopeful that we can figure our way through it for the benefit of the game." The World Baseball Softball Confederation said Monday the baseball tournament will be played from July 15-20 at Dodger Stadium. Major League Baseball is considering whether it can interrupt its 2028 season to allow major leaguers to participate, which could necessitate changes to the sport's national television contracts. MLB did not allow players on 40-man rosters to participate in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, when Nippon Professional Baseball interrupted its season and Japan beat the U.S. 2-0 in the gold medal game. 'In the event that major league players are going to play, what does that mean and what does that look like?" Clark said. "And perhaps just as importantly, what does it mean for those players who aren't participating? What type of scheduling adjustments need to be made? What type travel considerations and support need to considered? What does that means in regards to insurance?' ___

Medals for Milan-Cortina Olympics represent 'two halves coming together'
VENICE (AP) — The Milan-Cortina Olympics are the first games with two host cities in the name. So the medals for the upcoming Winter Games represent 'two halves coming together.' Organizers for the next Olympics and Paralympics unveiled the medals for the games at a ceremony alongside the Grand Canal in Venice on Tuesday. They are described as 'a graphic abstraction capturing the union of two halves in perpetual motion' and 'two unique halves coming together to create a bold, unified statement.' They feature the Olympic rings on one side and the games' logos on the other with specific events engraved on each medal. The Olympics are scheduled for Feb. 6-22, followed by the Paralympics March 6-15. A total of 1,146 medals will be awarded across 195 events between the two. The games will be spread across a wide swath of northern Italy, with ice sports in Milan and snow sports in several different mountain clusters. Venice is the capital of the Veneto region that includes Cortina d'Ampezzo, which will host women's Alpine skiing, sliding and curling. The medals are being produced by Italy's state mint, the Zecca dello Stato. 'I can assure you they won't deteriorate,' Milan-Cortina organizing committee president Giovanni Malagò said. 'They could even be recycled, although I hope nobody will do that.' ___
