Joe Duffy praises Liveline callers as he prepares for his final show
Joe Duffy has praised the callers as he prepares for his last episode of RTE's famous phone-in show on Friday afternoon.
The Ballyfermot broadcaster, 69, is retiring after 37 years at the station, where he has presented Liveline for 27 years.
'It will go on. Liveline is on today, but it's on on Monday as well,' Duffy told RTE Radio ahead of his last programme at 1.45pm.
He added: 'It's the voices on Liveline; the less I talk the better, I find.
'We (the media) are still trusted. In the main we are still trusted, unlike other countries.
'They're all part of our daily discourse, which is great and I hope that continues.'
Duffy joined RTE as a radio producer in 1989 and came to prominence as a reporter on the Gay Byrne Show.
He presented programmes such as Soundbyte before taking over Liveline from Marian Finucane in 1998, attracting some 400,000 listeners to the phone-in programme.
He said hearing his Dublin working-class accent on the national broadcaster had prompted some 'green-ink letters' of complaint, some of which were internal.
Among Liveline's most famous episodes were callers with thoughts on the television series Normal People, people sharing stories of corporal punishment in Ireland over the decades, and women talking about menopause.
Duffy said the only time he has been physically threatened during his tenure was over discussions about the closure of 'headshops', which sold drugs paraphernalia, where he said a man confronted him in a car park.
Asked about whether he would run for the presidency in the autumn, Duffy said: 'I will not lose the run of myself.'
'I can see the Aras from Claddagh Green, I'd say that's the closest I'll ever get to it.'

Love Island fans accuse bosses of ‘fixing' public dumping to get rid of Megan after Conor drama
Joanne Kavanagh, Showbiz Reporter Published: Invalid Date, LOVE Island fans have accused bosses of "fixing" last night's public dumping, in a bid to get rid of Megan after all the Conor drama. The latest episode saw Megan and Remell dumped after the public were asked to choose their favourite boy and favourite girl. 4 4 4 4 In last night's show, Giorgio got a text and everyone was sent to gather at the Firepit. The bottom three girls were then revealed as Shakira, Megan and Toni. And the bottom three boys in the firing line were Ben, Harry and Remell. Shockingly, Megan and Remell received the least votes from the public and were then immediately dumped from the villa. But Love Island fans have now got a theory about why Megan was the one to be dumped from the villa out of the girls. They think because of the public turning on Megan over the last few days, bosses were keen to see the Irish beauty leave the villa. Taking to social media, one said: "I'm guessing the producers didn't like Megan. "I bet they wouldn't have allowed the other Megan to go, had she been bottom. "Sometimes they let the public votes decide other times they let the Islanders choose... either way it's very very manipulated." Another echoed this "Basically the producers were happy to let Megan go, otherwise they'd have had the Islanders pick. Seething Love Island fans slam 'vile' Ben and demand he's axed in public vote after explosive row with Yasmin "They would've 100% saved Megan. "I think they wanted to get rid of her once they saw her unhinged and abusive behaviour. This week's drama in the villa saw Megan finally confirm ramping up her connection with rugby lad Conor. No sooner had she told a delighted Conor about the development, he suggested they spend the night in the hideaway. The explosive move came after they shared two snogs on the Terrace behind smitten Tommy Bradley 's back, infuriating fans. Megan her head was turned by Conor - sparking other Islanders to brand the situation 'wife swap'. Fans also turned on 'nasty' Megan after she gleefully called Conor and Tommy's row over her "brilliant". Love Island 2025 full lineup Harry Cooksley: A 30-year-old footballer with charm to spare. Kneecap to take to Glastonbury stage today despite Keir Starmer calling for them to be axed after terror charge
KNEECAP are set to perform at Glastonbury today despite calls for the Irish hip hop trio to be banned. Frontman Liam Og O hAnnaidh was charged under the Terrorism Act after allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist group Hezbollah while saying "up Hamas, up Hezbollah" during a gig in November. 5 5 Last week the rapper - who performs under the name Mo Chara - and bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh were mobbed by hundreds of fans outside Westminster Magistrates' Court. He was released on unconditional bail - and is due at the same court on August 20 for the next hearing. Kneecap are due on the Somerset festival's West Holts Stage at 4pm on Saturday. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said it is "not appropriate" for the group to perform at the festival, which started on Thursday. Asked by The Sun on Sunday if he thinks Kneecap should play, the PM said: 'No I don't. 'I think we need to come down really clearly on this. I won't say too much, because there's a court case on, but I don't think that's appropriate.' Tory leader Kemi Badenoch also said the BBC "should not be showing" the band's set in a post on social media. Her post said: "The BBC should not be showing Kneecap propaganda. "One Kneecap band member is currently on bail, charged under the Terrorism Act. "As a publicly funded platform, the BBC should not be rewarding extremism." Lead singer from the group Kneecap arriving at Westminster magistrates court in London The band are not currently listed for live broadcast. Avon and Somerset Police said: "Ticket-holders can once again expect to see uniformed officers on site at Glastonbury Festival 24/7 throughout the festival as part of our extensive policing operation ensuring it is safe for everyone attending, as well as those who live nearby." In response to the charge, Kneecap said in a post: '14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting on the other side of a wall, and once again the British establishment is focused on us... 'Instead of defending innocent people, or the principles of international law they claim to uphold, the powerful in Britain have abetted slaughter and famine in Gaza, just as they did in Ireland for centuries. Then, like now, they claim justification. 'The IDF units they arm and fly spy plane missions for are the real terrorists, the whole world can see it.' Hezbollah - founded in 1982 - is an Iran-backed Shiite militia. The Lebanese terrorist organisation voiced support for the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7 2023 before launching guided rockets and artillery shells at Israeli-occupied positions. Israel has retaliated with strikes on Gaza - and the conflict remains ongoing, with thousands of people, including civilian children, killed. Kneecap has said they "do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah", condemned all attacks on civilians, and alleged footage was "deliberately taken out of all context" as part of a "coordinated smear campaign" over their criticism of "the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people". 5 5
