While the Indiana Pacers were the most entertaining storyline of the 2025 playoffs, the Eastern Conference proved to be more competitive than most analysts had assumed it would be.
With the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics seemingly entering the postseason on a tier above the rest of the field, it was difficult to assume the Easter Conference Finals would be anything other than chalk.
Instead, the Pacers and New York Knicks ended their Finals aspirations.
For Cleveland, their second-round exit in just five games left them questioning a roster that won 64 games in the regular season.
For Boston, who even if the season still ended at the hands of New York, would have likely brought back Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday and other names now rumored in trade packages if it was not for the torn Achilles suffered by Jayson Tatum.
Even New York, who had as deep of a playoff run as they have had in the past 25 years , are still looking for a new head coach after firing Tom Thibodeau.
And, as the world saw in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, the storybook run for the Pacers ended in a non-storybook finale, with Tyrese Haliburton's torn Achilles costing him all of next season.
Whether injury-based or self-inflicted, the top four seeds in this past year's playoffs may have drastic changes to their roster and results next year, opening the door for any team in the East.
For the Milwaukee Bucks, this could be even more reason to not trade Giannis Antetokounmpo.
For the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons, two young teams led by up-and-coming stars, it may be more reason to invest in their current roster and become a threat this year.
But up to this point of the offseason, no team has benefited more and improved their roster for next year than the Atlanta Hawks.
The Hawks have been trapped in .500 purgatory since 2021 when they fell in the Conference Finals to the Bucks. Since then, they have failed to win a playoff round, and have yet to reach the postseason since 2023.
Outside of their defensive woes, which would have plagued them if they had made another deep playoff run in this span, the Hawks have struggled to find a secondary scorer to assist Trae Young.
The attempts of John Collins, Dejounte Murray, Bogdan Bogdanovic, or De'Andre Hunter were never enough to turn Atlanta into a 50-win team.
Even though Hunter may not deserve to be looped into this group, as he only experienced half a season receiving the second-most touches on the team, former General Manager Landry Fields saw Jalen Johnson as a better fit for this role than Hunter.

After averaging a double-double in just year two as a starter, Johnson has already begun justifying his five-year, $150 million extension signed in October.
Alongside the addition of Johnson's efficient scoring was Dyson Daniels's unexpected debut with the Hawks. After two years in New Orleans, the 21-year-old jumped his per-game numbers in just about every category .
At 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.0 steals per game, Daniels won the Most Improved Player of the Year Award alongside his 1st Team All-NBA honor.
Trae Young had a season we have come to expect from the Oklahoma alum, averaging 24.2 points on 34% shooting and 11.6 assists a game.
However, these numbers were not enough to lead the team in Win Shares, as that honor went to none other than Onyeka Okongwu, who made the most of his career-high season total of games started and minutes per game.
Averaging 13.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and almost block and steal per game, Head Coach Quin Snyder seemed to begin the passing of the torch process from Clint Capela, who is set to become a free agent after the 2025-26 season.
Whether Capela will remain in Atlanta for his final season is yet to be decided, as their first offseason move included bringing in a big man making $30 million on an expiring contract.
In the pre-draft fire sale for the Celtics, the Hawks capitalized on their available cap space by bringing in Kristaps Porzingis on a three-team deal.
As it stands today , the Hawks still reside under the 1st and 2nd apron thresholds, so there is not a contractual need to trade Capela.
However, with him now falling to third on the center's depth chart, there may no longer be a role for the former first-round pick.

Especially considering the brand of basketball Atlanta plays when at their best, which capitalizes on faster tempo at the potential expense of more defensive breakdowns.
With this young core developing in Atlanta, which this article has yet to mention both forwards Zaccharie Risacher (who started 73 games his rookie year), and their most recent draft selection Asa Newell will both be utilized in their high-paced offense.
While these moves may not even allow the Hawks to crack the top-15 in terms of defensive efficiency, the addition of these forwards to add rim protectors to Daniels and Johnson's perimeter abilities could show drastic improvements for the Hawks in 2025.
So, do not be surprised if the Hawks finish the offseason as one of the most active teams, especially in an Eastern Conference that will likely be without its typical playoff competition.

Tyrese Maxey reacts to Sixers signing Trendon Watford to a deal

The Philadelphia 76ers made their first move of the anticipated free agency period by bringing in Trendon Watford on a reported 2-year $5.3 million deal. The Sixers will look to Watford, 24, to bring his versatile game to both ends of the floor in an effort to help them bounce back from a tough 2024-25 season. Watford does a lot of things on the floor. He averaged 10.2 points per game for the Brooklyn Nets in 2024-25 and was able to produce for a rebuilding team. Of course, the expectations will be much higher in Philadelphia than in Brooklyn, but Watford will see a familiar face in close friend Tyrese Maxey. Maxey took to Twitter to give his reaction to Watford signing with the Sixers. Watford will be looking to provide a versatile scoring option next to Maxey as he and the Sixers now look to bounce back and get back in the Eastern Conference title race.

Derrick Rose On New York Knicks Firing Tom Thibodeau: ‘Everybody Was Surprised'

Derrick Rose was "surprised" the New York Knicks fired his former longtime head coach Tom Thibodeau. ... More (Photo by) Derrick Rose was as surprised as everyone when he heard news of Tom Thibodeau's firing. The New York Knicks parted ways with Thibodeau after he led them to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2000. Despite leading the Knicks to back-to-back 50-win seasons for the first time since 1995, Thibodeau found his way out on the outs after their six-game series loss to the Indiana Pacers. Rose played under Thibodeau for a number of years, including during their time with the Chicago Bulls and more recently with the Knicks, where Rose last played for him during the 2022-23 season. There's perhaps no NBA player more familiar with Thibodeau than Rose. The three-time All-Star guard became the youngest MVP in NBA history when he played for him during the 2010-11 season. "I think everybody was surprised," says Rose in a one-on-one interview. "There's no bad blood and he's in great spirit out still here on the East Coast, living life." The 67-year-old head coach is known as an old school, hard-nosed type. Thibodeau began his NBA coaching career as an assistant for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1989 and won a championship as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics in 2008. He has routinely led teams deep into the playoffs as a head coach and has won the Coach of the Year award twice, the first time during the 2010-11 season with the Bulls and the second time during the 2020-21 season with the Knicks. Both times were with Rose on the roster. "He put a lot of pressure on and that's why I love him because I've never wanted to crack -- I never wanted him to see me crack," says Rose. "He knew how good I was, and I wanted the challenge. He used to challenge me certain games about certain point guards or certain matchups. I took on that challenge." Under Thibodeau, the Bulls never won less than 45 games in a single season and they made it to the playoffs every year. While with the Knicks, Thibodeau led the franchise to the playoffs in four out of five years, including to at least the semifinals in each of the past three years. It's been their greatest three-year run since the turn of the millennium. "Thibs helped with me becoming a student of the game," says Rose. "Me watching film, because we watched a ton of film, the terminology of the game, time management, the history of the game, hearing him talk with other coaches, talk about just the history of the game and certain plays and certain games. He's a historian, especially when he gets around people that he's thoughtful with." Rose became one of the best guards in the NBA very early on in his career under Thibodeau's tutelage. Although they had a good relationship, Thibodeau wasn't the type of coach to hand out a lot of compliments. It kind of goes hand in hand with his old-school style approach of tough love. 'Trying to impress him on the court when I did do certain things, because he was hard to impress as a coach,' says Rose of playing under Thibodeau. "But our relationship — we had like a quagmire relationship — where I don't even think after the MVP year, I rarely heard him say, 'Congrats.' That's not in a bad way." Despite the contrast in personalities, Rose says he "loved" his relationship with his former head coach. Rose played a total of eight seasons under Thibodeau. "We just had a funny relationship, where on the court, we both wanted to win, win every game, and we knew how passionate each other was about the game of basketball," says Rose. "How much we both put into it, but we both have two totally different personalities, which a lot of people look at as weird, but I loved our relationship. I love our relationship now." Rose is less than a year removed after retiring from the NBA, but he's enjoying his post-basketball life. The 36-year-old is partnering with Panini for an exclusive multi-year partnership. The partnership includes new autographs from Rose on trading cards, which is the first time in more than a decade that he'll have autographed cards available. The former Bulls great details why he stopped signing autographs years ago and how it actually ended up helping the value of his autographs. "I stopped signing a while back, and that kind of helped me with my value of my signature, because I stepped away from signing," Rose explains. "Once you come in, you sign right away, where you have the deals, and some people they go to the black market and they sign and I kind of stayed away from that, because I was going through a lot of things at the time. "Financially I was stable," Rose continues to say. "That helped me. It prevented me from going out and killing the value of my signature by overloading the market, and it helped me know the importance of this business by me slowly walking into it as a collector, because I'm collecting now too also." Rose, who was speaking at an activation event in New York City at Dave & Adams Store in New York, is a big chess player. He's keeping busy in his post-NBA career with a chess event going on in Las Vegas on July 12 and 13. The purpose of the event is not just for competitive purposes, but to put more eyes on the sport. "We're going to try to put eyes on the game and the visibility," says Rose. "That's one thing, but the biggest part is putting the capital in player's pocket. They dedicate their whole lives to this sport. It's only right that get paid the right way and get seen the right way. That's one of the reasons why I have joined freestyle chess and Magnus Carlsen — a five-time World Chess champion -- because we have the same approach and the same common goal, and that's to put the eyes on the game."

Lakers Insider Lists Four Potential LeBron James Destinations

Lakers Insider Lists Four Potential LeBron James Destinations originally appeared on Fadeaway World. LeBron James has picked up his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season with the Los Angeles Lakers, but his future is still somewhat uncertain. James could potentially ask for a trade from the Lakers, and team insider Jovan Buha has listed out the four teams that would make the most sense for him. Advertisement "I don't think we're at the point of him asking out, but if he does, I assume there will be a list," Buha said. "In terms of teams that would make sense, I came up with four: Dallas, Cleveland, New York, and Golden State. In no particular order." Those are four interesting landing spots. James, of course, turned down a chance to go to the Golden State Warriors in 2024. The Warriors had reached out to the Lakers regarding a trade, but he did not want to go there at the time. That stance could have changed over time, of course, and it would be great to see James and Stephen Curry on the same team. Speaking of things that would be great, his going back to the Cleveland Cavaliers would be rather special as well. James led the Cavaliers to their first and only NBA title in 2016 and could prove to be the piece that gets the current iteration over the finish line. The New York Knicks would be a fascinating option as well for James. He would make them the clear favorites in the Eastern Conference, depending on what they'd have to give up for him. Being the one to end the Knicks' long wait for a title would greatly enhance James' legacy. Advertisement Lastly, we get to the Dallas Mavericks, and Buha reports that there have been murmurs about James heading to Texas. "There has been some buzz, I will say, in the general NBA ether over the last week or two with LeBron and Dallas," Buha stated. "And if you just look at the situation, they have [Anthony Davis], they have Kyrie [Irving]. "They have Jason Kidd, who LeBron played with in Team USA and then also played under with the Lakers," Buha continued. "Kidd was [an] assistant on that 2020 title team, and LeBron loved being coached by him. They also have Nico Harrison... He is a former Nike guy, and LeBron is Mr. Nike." Despite all this, Buha expects James to stay with the Lakers. He pointed out that this tactic has been used before to pressurize the team into making moves, but later acknowledged that this situation is a bit different than the ones before. Advertisement The Lakers would be hoping James ends up staying, as they have absolutely no hope of competing for a title next season without him. Considering the 40-year-old's contract situation, they won't get a good-enough haul in return to replace his production. James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game for the Lakers in 2024-25. The 21-time All-Star made the All-NBA Second Team and remains one of the best players in the league. While there might be some drop-off in James' production in his 23rd season, you'd still back him to play at an All-NBA level once again. The only question is which team he will be on, come the end of the campaign.
