'Sesame Street' puppet Elmo's hacked X account calls for Jews' extermination
A slew of messages calling for the extermination of Jewish people and labeling the US president a "puppet" of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were shared on the account.
Around 650,000 users follow Elmo, the fuzzy red monster who teaches his young audience about kindness and patience.
An archived version of the X account showed several messages were published on Sunday afternoon. They were later removed, although a link to a Telegram page apparently associated with the hack remained in the account's bio section.
Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street, said that an unidentified hacker was behind the posts.
"Elmo's X account was briefly compromised yesterday by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts," a spokesperson told AFP in a statement.
"The account has since been secured," they added.
The hacking on Elon Musk's X platform is the latest in a string of hate speech incidents since the billionaire bought then-Twitter in 2022 and axed moderation policies that he considers censorship.
On Saturday, his xAI startup apologized for antisemitic posts published on X by its artificial intelligence assistant Grok, which praised Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
Antisemitism is facing particular scrutiny in the United States after two Israeli embassy staffers were killed outside a Jewish museum in Washington in May.
A firebombing attack at a protest in Colorado supporting Israeli hostages held in Gaza left over a dozen people wounded in June, and an 82-year-old woman later died from her injuries.
Anger over Israel's conduct of its war in Gaza resulted in widespread protests on US university campuses, with the government cracking down on the demonstrations after accusing them of antisemitism.

"Pardon me for being late. We had a great meeting with NATO, the secretary general, and we're going to do something a little different for this country. We're going to supply weapons to NATO at a large amount. They're going to deliver the weapons and they're going to pay for 100% of the weapons." United States President Donald Trump says the US is going to send more advanced weaponry to Ukraine, and it will be European countries footing the bill. In what could be his strongest show of support for Ukraine yet, the US President is also threatening to impose 100 per cent 'secondary' tariffs on buyers of Russian exports. Former US Ambassador to Ukraine and Distinguished Fellow at the Atlantic Council, William B. Taylor, says Mr Trump is growing weary of the Russian President. 'Well I think President Trump has figured out that (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin has been stringing him along, has been tapping him along as President Trump had said earlier. That President Putin is not serious about any kind of an agreement, a ceasefire (as) President Trump had thought he might be.' The weapons deal, paired with Mr Trump's expression of mounting frustrations with Russia, signals a shifting tone from the administration in its policy towards Ukraine. The threat of sanctions on Russia came with a 50-day grace period in which Vladimir Putin can accept a peace deal. White House officials say the plan is expected to be a 100 per cent tax on the import of Russian goods, along with secondary 100 per cent tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil, gas and other energy products. But, Mr Trump says he hopes it doesn't get to that stage. "I've been hearing so much talk, talk, talk. It's all talk and then missiles go into Kyiv and kill 60 people. It's got to stop. It's got to stop. But the purpose of this is to say that this is a very big deal we have made. This is billions of dollars worth of military equipment is going to be purchased from the United States, going to NATO, etc., and that's going to be quickly distributed to the battlefield." Among the weapons included in the deal will be Patriot missile systems, which Ukraine has been urgently requesting and see as crucial to their air defence capabilities. The Patriot Missile System is considered one of the most advanced air defence systems in the US arsenal and can intercept aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Russia has been scaling up attacks in recent weeks, breaking several of its own records for the volume of drones launched into Ukraine in a single night. William B. Taylor says Ukraine wants the systems to defend from Russia's escalating long range attacks. 'Ukrainians do have Patriot missile systems and they know how to use them. They use them very well. They use them very effectively. They know the value of these Patriot systems and others. So they are, they're very eager to get more of them because they don't have enough.' Under the deal, the United States would sell Patriot air defense missiles to NATO members, which would then supply them to Ukraine. NATO Secretary Mark Rutte says Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Canada all wanted to be a part of rearming Ukraine. He says the deal will allow Ukraine to access huge military stockpiles sooner. 'This is building on the tremendous success of the NATO Summit, the 5 per cent, but also the decision to keep Ukraine strong and the decision to increase our defense industrial production. So based on this, that was Europe stepping up. This is again Europeans stepping up. So I've been in contact with many countries. I can tell you at this moment Germany massively, but also Finland and Denmark and Sweden and Norway, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Canada, they all want to be part of this. And this is only the first wave; there will be more." Throughout his second term, Donald Trump has been pushing for Europe to increase military spending and contribute more to Ukraine's defence efforts. European allies have been urging Washington to ensure any scaling back of military support is coordinated to prevent gaps that may leave NATO members vulnerable to Russian aggression. Mr Taylor says this latest announcement could be beneficial to both the US and Europe. 'The Americans and the Europeans are teaming up in a mutually beneficial way, are teaming up to supply the Ukrainians with the weapons that they need over the longer term. So Putin is going to have to realize over the 50 days or sooner that he's not winning and can't win. And he can't wait us out. That's his only strategy. That's what his only strategy…to try to wait out the the Ukrainians or wait out the Europeans or wait out the Americans. Well, these sanctions and these weapons demonstrate to Putin that he can't wait this out. And then he may have to come to the table and strike a deal. In Kyiv, some residents are expressing cautious optimism over the announcement. While holding out hope for an end to the war, Ukrainians like Artem Horchakov say it is difficult to know how close a deal really is. "Maybe it lifts the mood of society as a whole. He just said a lot, and if there was some result, maybe his words would have been more weighty. And he said and said, people say a lot. Let's see how it goes. Let's hope for the best. I hope that everything will be the way we want. And we want peace, for the war in Ukraine to end, and for all the guys to return alive. Because my father is also a soldier, my friends are military, this affects every family, and me too." In Moscow, Russians like Marina say more weapons will only bring about further destruction. "Very bad, it means a new round of war is beginning. It won't bring anything good to anyone, not to us, not to them, and not to the whole world. It won't be good. People on their side, on our side, will also die and suffer. We don't want that, we just want good neighbourly relations. And don't scare the world with war. We are not war, we are peace."

Pentagon inks contracts for Musk's xAI, competitors
The Pentagon announced contracts on Monday with multiple leading US artificial intelligence firms including Elon Musk's xAI, which has faced intense scrutiny in recent days over anti-Semitic posts by its Grok chatbot. Each of the contracts to xAI, Anthropic, Google and OpenAI have a ceiling value of $200 million, the Pentagon's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) said in a statement. The awards will enable the Department of Defense "to leverage the technology and talent of US frontier AI companies to develop agentic AI workflows across a variety of mission areas," it said. The contract with xAI comes just days after the company was forced to apologize again for controversial posts by its Grok chatbot. After an update on July 7, the chatbot praised Adolf Hitler in some responses on the X social media platform, denounced "anti-white hate," and described Jewish representation in Hollywood as "disproportionate." xAI apologized for the extremist and offensive messages, and said it had corrected the instructions that led to the incidents. The release on Wednesday of Grok 4, the latest chatbot version, was almost met with scrutiny after it appeared to consult Musk's positions on some questions it was asked before responding. The contract between xAI and the Department of Defense comes even as Musk and President Donald Trump have publicly feuded in recent weeks. Musk, a top backer of Trump's most recent presidential campaign, was entrusted with managing the new agency known as DOGE to massively slash government spending under the current administration. After ending his assignment in May, the South African-born entrepreneur publicly criticized Trump's major budget bill for increasing government debt. The president and the businessman engaged in heated exchanges on social media and in public statements before Musk apologized for some of his more combative messages. - 'Critical national security needs' - The government and the defense sector are considered a potential growth driver for AI giants. Musk's xAI announced on Monday the launch of a "Grok for Government" service, following a similar initiative by OpenAI. In addition to the Pentagon contract, "every federal government department, agency, or office (can now) purchase xAI products" thanks to its inclusion on an official supplier list, xAI said. Meta meanwhile has partnered with the start-up Anduril to develop virtual reality headsets for soldiers and law enforcement. OpenAI had previously announced in June that it had secured a Defense Department contract with a ceiling of $200 million. "Establishing these partnerships will broaden DoD use of and experience in frontier AI capabilities and increase the ability of these companies to understand and address critical national security needs with the most advanced AI capabilities U.S. industry has to offer," said the CDAO statement on Monday.

Update on charged ex-Greens protester
Former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas will fight charges over an anti-Israel protest in Sydney that left her with a bloodied eye after police confirmed they were not dropping any further charges. The former Grayndler candidate was involved in a protest picketing SEC Plating in Belmore in Sydney's southwest on June 27 following reports the company provided jet components used by the Israel Defence Forces. Police issued a move-on order to about 60 people, but a scuffle broke out when some failed to comply with directions. Ms Thomas was later pictured with a swollen eye and dried blood on her face following the protest, claiming on social media that she may have suffered permanent vision damage and had undergone multiple surgeries. Credit: Supplied She was subsequently charged with hindering or resisting arrest and two counts of refusing to comply with all directions to disperse. An additional charge related to the rarely used emergency anti-protest powers introduced after the 2005 Cronulla riots was earlier dropped by police. Appearing before the Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday, Ms Thomas' lawyer Stewart O'Connell told magistrate Glenn Walsh that he believed there would be 'an application in relation to at least one of the charges'. Instead, the police prosecutor confirmed that officers were seeking pleas in relation to all three charges. Pleas of not guilty were subsequently entered to all three matters. The court was told the NSW Director of Public Prosecution had taken carriage. Ms Thomas was one of five people to appear before Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday charged over the protest. Rising Tide organiser Zachary Edward Jaworowski Schofield, Brandon Eid, Shane Reside, and Holly Zhang all had their matters heard on Tuesday, with Mr O'Connell entering pleas of not guilty to each. The court was told the matters would be referred to the NSW DPP because of the 'seriousness and media interest'. In the matters of Mr Reside and Ms Zhnag, the court was told two witnesses would be called, with body-worn video to be produced for the hearing but not any CCTV. Mr Schofield is expected to return before the court later on Tuesday for a bail application. NSW Greens call for Premier to take action In a statement, lawyer Peter O'Brien on Monday called for the charges against Ms Thomas to be dropped, claiming he was 'satisfied' the former Greens candidate had been 'punched in the face' by police. 'My office has now viewed all available footage of the incident giving rise to the moments leading to the injury to Ms Thomas' eye on the 27th of June, and I am satisfied that Ms Thomas was punched in the face by a male police officer, causing extensive and serious injury to her eye,' Mr O'Brien said. Mr O'Brien said Ms Thomas was an 'innocent victim of gratuitous police brutality' and condemned the actions of police as 'completely and entirely unjustifiable'. Ms Thomas had earlier claimed her injuries were the result of anti-protest laws introduced by the NSW Labor government earlier this year following a spate of anti-Semitic attacks and an explosives-laden caravan found in Dural in Sydney's northwest that police later said was a fake terrorism plot. The laws outlaw many forms of protest outside places of worship and introduce harsh new penalties. They are subject to a constitutional challenge in the NSW Supreme Court, launched on behalf of the Palestine Action Group. On Tuesday, NSW Greens MLC Sue Higginson called on Police Minister Yasmin Catley to stand Assistant Police Commissioner Brett McFadden down after reports he falsely claimed he reviewed police body-cam footage from the incident involving Ms Thomas and found no evidence of misconduct. 'NSW Police have misled the public, ignored evidence, and made excuses for violence against women – and Labor Premier Chris Minns hasn't uttered a word against them,' she said on Instagram. 'The inconsistent statements from NSW Police make it clear that all charges against Hannah and her fellow protesters should be dropped. 'We will see more violence against peaceful protests unless NSW Labor urgently repeal their draconian anti-protest laws.'
