The post Pelicans' Zion Williamson hit with 'focal point' label by Joe Dumars appeared first on ClutchPoints.
As rumors have surrounded New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson, the team's executive vice president of basketball operations, Joe Dumars, spoke about the plans surrounding the former No. 1 overall pick. Away from basketball, the Pelicans player in Williamson also has allegations of rape according to a recent lawsuit, adding more controversy to the 24-year-old.

Despite the immense amount of speculation around Williamson and possibly being dealt this offseason, Dumars would say to Rod Walker of The Times-Picayune that the team will move 'forward' with the star. He would even go as far as to say that Williamson will 'continue to be a focal point' for the franchise.
'I've had really good conversations with Zion,' Dumars said. 'We've had lunch. Dinner. Watched playoff games together. We've done it all. I've had some real, honest conversations with him. Some real, direct, and honest conversations. We're going to go forward with Zion. He's going to continue to be a focal point here as we go forward.'
It seems as if Dumars and Williamson have cemented a relationship together, even mentioning when they attended the NBA Draft Lottery this past May.
'I sent him to the lottery for a reason,' Dumars said. 'I want him to start focusing on the responsibilities of being the best player here and the focal point. There are some responsibilities that come with that. Go represent your organization.'

While some of the Pelicans have broken their silence over the allegations against Williams, such as owner Gayle Benson, it seems as if she downplayed the news. Saying that 'people can sue you for anything' when asked about the recent court filing in Los Angeles which accusses Willamson of rape and assault in 2020.

'You know, lawsuits are lawsuits,' Benson said. 'You really can't, you don't know. I mean, people can sue you for anything. There's no reason. You can be innocent or not. It's just something that people do, unfortunately.'
Dumars wouldn't give his full thoughts on the matter since he doesn't delve into legal matters.
'I've been advised not to venture into any of his legal issues,' Dumars said.
Speaking about Williamson's ventures on the court, it's been an arguable mixed bag as he's a two-time All-Star, but has missed a ton of time with injuries.
'We've had some real direct conversations with him about that,' Dumars said. 'Expectations. Accountability. That's our plan going forward with Zion.'

At any rate, New Orleans is looking to vastly improve after finishing last season with a 21-61 record, which put them 14th in the Western Conference.

ESPN: Pelicans receive failing offseason grade after draft-night trade

Headlined by an aggressive move to draft Derik Queen with the 13th pick, the New Orleans Pelicans were given a low grade by ESPN when assessing their offseason roster moves. The Pelicans traded the 23rd pick (Asa Newell) and an unprotected 2026 first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for the draft rights to Queen. The deal has been widely criticized, with one executive telling The Athletic that it was the worst trade outside of Luka Dončić in the last decade. The organization, led by new president Joe Dumars, also drafted Jeremiah Fears with the seventh pick, acquired Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey from the Washington Wizards and signed free agent Kevon Looney. The moves received a failing grade from Kevin Pelton. Grade: F The Hawks-Pelicans draft-night swap was seemingly the most lopsided transaction of the summer. It could pay off for New Orleans, but it was far too risky to be sensible -- particularly in the context of the Pelicans' other moves. New Orleans is betting on Jordan Poole being a playoff-caliber starting point guard and has overloaded its depth chart at center by drafting Derik Queen and signing veteran Kevon Looney. Queen was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year at Maryland, averaging 16.5 points, nine rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks in 36 games on 52.6% shooting from the field. He helped lead the Terrapins to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. Dumars and the front office highly valued Queen in the draft and believe he can step in and contribute at a high level. He defended their decision to take him, stating: "I've been doing this for way too long to give credence to naysayers." Queen debuted with the Pelicans in the NBA Summer League, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one block. Though he is expected to be sidelined for three months with a wrist injury, the team is eager to get him on the court and seemingly has no regrets over its recent moves.

Kevin Durant names 3 legends joining him on small forward Mount Rushmore

The post Kevin Durant names 3 legends joining him on small forward Mount Rushmore appeared first on ClutchPoints. Ahead of Kevin Durant's first season with the Houston Rockets, he was put on the spot when a reporter asked him to name three legendary players to join him on the Mount Rushmore of all time NBA small forwards. The Rockets, who acquired Durant in a seven-team blockbuster trade, will begin a new era with one of the most talented small forwards in the history of the NBA. However, who would Kevin name as the other three alongside him? Durant didn't waste time thinking of which Hall of Fame small forwards are most-deserving on Mouth Rushmore, per NBA reporter Jamal Christopher. 'LeBron. Kawhi. Larry Bird,' Durant said. While most NBA fans would anticipate hearing Los Angeles Lakers All-Star LeBron James' name mentioned, Los Angeles Clippers' Kawhi Leonard and Boston Celtics' Hall of Fame forward Larry Bird are worthy finishing touches for all-time great small forwards. Ime Udoka on what adding Kevin Durant means for Rockets Ahead of Rockets All-Star Kevin Durant's upcoming season, Rockets head coach Ime Udoka praised Durant's approach as a leader for his new team. Udoka, who coached Kevin as an assistant coach of the Nets, discussed how KD's style will undoubtedly rub off on his new teammates. 'His day-to-day routine is very similar to Fred [Van Vleet] and Dillon [Brooks], and Jeff [Green], and the vets that we brought in,' Udoka said. 'I think he takes us to another level with his work ethic. Seeing him in practice in Brooklyn and for Team USA, he would almost go through practice to get to his routine. And then, you see the work he puts in to maintain the level that he's been at. So, that definitely rubs off on guys. 'Just like all our vets did; come in and impart wisdom, and teach his experience with these guys, and it'll be invaluable for these guys to see and learn from him.' Udoka and Durant can't wait to get get started. 'We're both excited to work together again,' Udoka added. 'Obviously, he was in a tough situation, looking forward to moving on and very happy to do that with us. He shared that excitement and joy to be back with some guys he already knows back in Texas. We all know about what he brings. No secret there. But, yeah, very happy to get going, very excited about our young guys that he's ready to play with.' In a competitive Western Conference, the Rockets are projected to be title contenders next season. Al Horford's exit from Celtics all but confirmed

The post Al Horford's exit from Celtics all but confirmed appeared first on ClutchPoints. Veteran center Al Horford has been a calming presence within the Boston Celtics' locker room for nearly half of his 18-year career. However, the C's might not be able to rely on him for much longer. The 39-year-old is currently an unrestricted free agent and has reportedly grown very friendly with the Golden State Warriors this summer. Although no deal has been confirmed yet, ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel said that Horford (as well as free-agent guard De'Anthony Melton) recently reached a verbal agreement with the Dubs. 'Al Horford and De'Anthony Melton are widely expected to sign with the Warriors,' Siegel wrote. 'A handful of teams at NBA Summer League stated Horford and Melton already have verbal agreements in place with Golden State.' Horford leaving Beantown shouldn't be a complete shock as Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens even admitted that bringing him back was going to be difficult. 'I'd say that's unlikely,' Stevens replied when asked about Horford returning during a press conference in early July. 'But I don't want to speak in absolute terms until an ultimate decision is made. 'If he were to go and play somewhere else, I think he's an all-time Celtic, a winner, and did everything he could for this organization, not only in the games but also how he impacted our younger players.' As a result of the new CBA and its stringent financial penalties, Boston probably can't afford Horford. While the five-time All-Star is far from his prime and nearing retirement — which he's reportedly considered this offseason — he'll command over the vet minimum at the very least. The Celtics already failed to re-sign backup center Luke Kornet this summer as a result of money woes, meaning Horford's departure is all the more likely. But if anything is working in Boston's favor, it's the fact that restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga is holding things up for the Warriors. Before Golden State can finalize a deal with Horford, it may have to decide what to do with its 22-year-old wing, who's surely looking for a payday. In addition to the Kuminga debacle, Horford's shocking free-agency decision nearly a decade ago could provide Celtics fans with a tad of optimism. Back in 2016, the former Atlanta Hawk surprisingly chose the C's over his old team, even duping legendary NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski. Another dramatic turnaround isn't out of the question given the volatile nature of free agency, yet as things stand, it seems like Horford won't don the green and white again.
