EastEnders star unrecognisable with incredible new job 38 years since exit

Daily Mirrora day ago
Kelvin Carpenter may have left Walford in 1987, but fans of the show still remember actor Paul J Medford who played him - and not only for the single he released with Letitia Dean
Tony Carpenter and his son, Kelvin, were the first-ever black characters to appear in EastEnders when it launched back in 1985. Black and Asian characters had been under-represented in UK soaps and its creators were keen to redress the balance. Builder Tony was played by actor Oscar James, 82, with one of his most famous storylines involving clandestine affair with the original Queen Vic landlady, Angie Watts (Anita Dobson).
The star has gone on further TV and movie roles since his 1987 exit from the soap – including starring in Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp and also gracing the stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company – and he prefers not to linger on his Albert Square days.

His partner once told the Mirror: "It was such a long time ago that he doesn't like to talk about it. To him it was just a role and he has done so much since. He has made some films and done some wonderful plays. He still gets excited by every role and had no idea when he took the part in EastEnders it would follow him. He doesn't watch the show anymore apart from maybe when I have it on but it has changed so much since his day."
Meanwhile, Kelvin – played by actor Paul J Medford, 57 – was one of Albert Square's brightest teens, balancing education, aspirations, and working-class tenacity. His portrayal stood out as a rare positive depiction of Black youth on 1980s television and he became one of the most popular young characters in the show's early days.
During his time in Albert Square, Kelvin had a chequered love life, including flings with Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully), with him also showing an interest in Mary the Punk (Linda Davidson).
In one storyline, he went to college and formed a band with friends, which led to the real-life release of a single with Letitita, Something Outta Nothing, reaching No 12 on the UK Singles Chart. Kelvin stayed on in Walford even after the rest of his on-screen family departed, but eventually left the show himself in 1987 to pursue university studies.

Paul has gone on to boast a successful stage career, featuring in West End hits including Five Guys Named Moe, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Lion King, and was honoured with the Society of Black Arts Achievement Award in 1995.
He has since relocated to the USA and moved on to an executive career. In 2012, he worked on Naomi Campbell's reality TV series The Face as Talent Producer, and later worked as Model Casting Director on seasons 17 and 18 of another reality show, Project Runway. In 2019, he was named Vice President, Unscripted Current Series, at Nickelodeon, working on productions including The Spongebob Musical: Live On Stage! as well as Nick's Ultimate Bloopers.
Despite residing overseas, a former neighbour once revealed disclosed that Paul remains an avid follower of the soap that launched his career, keeping up with Walford's happenings through family and the internet.

Brooklyn Beckham posts adoring tribute to wife Nicola as family feud rages on

Brooklyn Beckham has posted a gushing tribute to his wife, Nicola Peltz, after a source told the Mirror he 'felt he didn't fit in' with his famous footballing family Brooklyn Beckham has posted another loving tribute to his wife, Nicola Peltz, as the bitter feud with his family rumbles on. The young couple, who married three years ago, reportedly left David Beckham 'heartbroken' when they swerved his 50th birthday in May - despite being in the UK at the time. On Saturday, a source told the Mirror that the hot sauce enthusiast, 26, doesn't feel like he 'fits in' with his famous family, ahead of his little sister Harper's 14th birthday. And now, Brooklyn has declared he's on Team Nicola again in his latest Instagram post in which he shares a snap of his wife larking about next to a pile of Louis Vuitton luggage with the caption: "My girl xx." ‌ READ MORE: Brooklyn Beckham feels he 'doesn't fit into family' as Harper's 'heartbroken' over rift ‌ It comes after a source told us that Brooklyn probably wouldn't be going to Harper's 14th birthday next week because of the tension between his wife and his parents. Claiming Victoria and David's firstborn 'didn't want things to turn out this way', they said: 'He didn't want it to turn out this way and he's always been really close to all his siblings, but he is a married man now and his priorities have to lie somewhere else." Last month, Brooklyn publicly marked the five-year anniversary of his marriage proposal to Nicola, saying it was his 'best decision ever'. Our source said: "It's becoming increasingly obvious that the former photographer's loyalties don't lie with his parents and siblings", but adds that it isn't surprising given he is now married. They continued: 'He just doesn't feel his family have treated Nicola well and now that he's grown so close to her family in the States, he doesn't really feel like he fits into the Beckham family right now. "If Harper's wish is to have her brother at home for her big day, sadly, she's probably going to be disappointed.' ‌ There's been plenty of family affection flying around on the Beckhams' social media channels, most recently when David paid tribute to Victoria on their wedding anniversary and tagged Brooklyn in the caption. However, Brooklyn has, so far, stayed silent despite being very vocal on Instagram when it comes to Nicola's billionaire family. In posts, which some have said are twisting the knife, Brooklyn has wished both his brother-in-law and father-in-law Happy Birthday recently despite snubbing his own dad's milestone. He also fuelled the feud rumours by posing for a new photoshoot for Italian brand, Moncler, which was shot in London in May just two miles from the Beckham's family home in Notting Hill - and only one mile away from David, who was at the Chelsea Flower Show at the time.

A wise man might even consider this comedy gold

The Monkey Barrel, Edinburgh Learning new facts at a comedy gig is always an added bonus. Someone who can simultaneously educate and entertain is undoubtedly a double threat. At the start of his show, Ayo Adenekan informs us that only around 2% of Edinburgh's population identify as Black. The 23-year-old Nigerian-Scottish comedian goes on to describe what it's like to be a Black, queer man growing up in such an overwhelmingly white city. There's a gentle ease to Ayo's story-telling. A laid-back charm. We're soon hanging onto every softly-spoken word. At primary school, he desperately wanted to stand out, not stick out. Tales of his auditions attempts for the Years 1-3 Nativity play would melt the hardest of hearts. A wise man might even consider it comedy gold. Read More: Difficult issues are dismantled with razor-sharp wit and class. At the barber's, Ayo throws shade on the fade as well as the accompanying casual racism. Activism is acknowledged and explored via the back seat of the school bus. It turns out the cool kids always have the best punchlines. A few stories need filled out and finished off, though. It would have been good to learn more about that distressing lads' holiday to Magaluf, for example. The individuality of much of Ayo's material is genuinely exciting. Many of his friends have recently become pet or baby parents. His take on trying to bringing them up to speed on his dating exploits adds some superb physicality to proceedings. This Leith local's come a long way in a short space of time. His first steps in stand-up were in 2023. Last year, he came third in Gilded Balloon's comedy competition, So You Think You're Funny? This year, as recipient of Brass Tacks Debut Fund, his Fringe costs for this much-anticipated first hour will be met by Red Bull UK. Here's a thing. During a show, I like to jot down my observations and comments. I do it old-school, using a pen and paper. I've noticed that the more I'm enjoying a performance, the less I tend to write. Looking back at my notes from one didn't take long. All it said on the page was, 'the real deal.' Here's another fact I learnt at the gig. Scottish comedy has a new rising star. Ayo Adenekan is appearing at The Monkey Barrel July 30-August 24.

Strictly's Maisie Smith opens up on wedding plans as she teases 'exciting next chapter'

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Maisie Smith suggested her and partner Max George have their "whole life" to get married as she looked forward to "an exciting next chapter". The EastEnders actress, 23, met The Wanted singer when they both competed on the 2020 series of Strictly. Maisie reached the final where she lost to comedian Bill Bailey while Max was the third contestant eliminated. The celebrity couple have been together since 2022 but Maisie insists she is in no rush to walk down the aisle. It comes after Max underwent surgery for a heart block over the Christmas period last year where he was fitted with a pacemaker. Speaking to the Sun on Sunday, Maisie said: "I'm still a baby! We have so much time. We have got the whole world, a whole life. "Now Max is getting better and stronger and fitter. And we are ready to start an exciting next chapter of our time together." (Image:for EE) Max, 36, feared he would die when he was rushed to hospital last Christmas so wrote out a will on his iPhone. The popstar was told the procedure could cause a dangerous bleed on his heart. Maisie first appeared on EastEnders as Tiffany Butcher as a six year old in April 2008. She starred on the BBC soap until 2014 before making a brief return in 2016. She returned for another stint on Albert Square in 2018 before departing again in 2022. Maisie and Max became good friends when they were both competing on the BBC dancing reality show. That friendship turned into romance and Maisie relocated from her home town in Essex to move in with her partner in Manchester. Their 13-year age gap prompted a furious backlash online though. Speaking to Fabulous back in 2023, Maisie said: "If it wasn't that, it would be something else. (Image: Alan Chapman/Dave Benett/Getty I) "People don't understand what goes on behind closed doors in a relationship, and I think they also forget that I'm a consenting 21-year-old woman who's actually been working longer than Max. "I don't notice the age difference and neither do my friends or family. My mum Julia is the one who reads through all the comments." Maisie revealed that the loved-up pair are going to spend their summer holidays in France this year. Meanwhile, it comes after Strictly's It Takes Two presenter Fleur East shared an update on the show's future after opening up about the "intense bubble" she experienced while competing on the show. Fleur feels "pleased" that she was able to continue working with the show after her performance, noting that many other contestants reported a sense of 'FOMO' (fear of missing out) once they finished. She told the I: "I think it's just like no other show. It's a really joyous show. It brings people together, it's fun, and I don't think it's going anywhere."
