Rangers 'hold' transfer talks with Serie A winger as Jamie Vardy 'open' to Ibrox deal
The Premiership side are ramping up their transfer search with the Champions League qualifiers rapidly approaching Rangers have reportedly held "concrete talks" with Como over winger Samuel Ballet. A new wide man is on the Ibrox shopping list following the departure of Vaclav Cerny at the end of last season with QPR winning the race for target Kwame Poku. And Blick Sports claims that Rangers officials have been holding talks with the Serie A side over a move for the 24-year-old who spent last season on loan at FC Zurich. The Swiss side are said to be "increasingly likely" to miss out on a permanent deal with the officials from. The Scottish Premiership side holding "concrete talks" over a deal. Norwich City and Trabzonspor are also said to be chasing a deal. With both Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers potentially heading for the exit, a new striker is also in the minds of the Rangers' higher-ups, Jamie Vardy would be "open" to a move to Glasgow. That is according to transfer insider Mick Brown - who expects "movement" on the 38-year-old's future in the coming days after his Leicester City contract officially expired. Rangers are far from alone in chasing the veteran's signature with a whopping 10 clubs said to be in the picture, but Brown told Football Insider: 'Signing Jamie Vardy would be a good move for Rangers. It's a deal they've been looking into because they're always keen to capitalise on any opportunities to sign top players on free transfers. 'I expect there will be a lot of movement this week with contracts expiring today [June 30]. It's one I expect Vardy would be open to as well, because it's less intense than the Premier League which maybe at this stage of his career he isn't best suited to. 'Plus, it would give him and opportunity to play in Europe so he's still at a high level. 'He's performed to a very good level for a number of years and now he's maybe going over the top, so a move to Rangers would be a good opportunity. 'e'd fit in well and score plenty of goals, and that's exactly what Russell Martin needs. Especially if they're expecting to lose two of their current forwards. 'Then, because he would be on a free transfer, they can save some money which would then be put towards other areas of the team.' Croatian centre-back Luka Jelenic is reportedly a target for Rangers just 12 months after a move to Osijek. The 25-year-old only joined his current club in an £800,000 deal last summer and a bargain deal could be on the cards at Ibrox. Vitoria Guimaraes has also been linked with a move - but a path appears to be clear with O Jogo reporting the club are no longer interested.

David Murray tarnished Rangers legacy and naive fans falling for Peter Lawwell nonsense must remember one thing
Andy Newport manned the phone and it was a fiery start to the week Record Sport's Keith Jackson isn't buying the narrative being pushed in Sir David Murray's new book. And neither are today's Hotline callers. Our chief sports writer has taken a swipe at the former Rangers owner's claims he was duped over the sale of the club to Craig Whyte in 2011. And Lewis Fotheringham, Mount Ellen, reckons Jacko was spot on with his assessment, saying: 'I have got to praise Keith Jackson's very personal column regarding David Murray. 'Murray says that he cared deeply about Rangers, but selling the club to Craig Whyte has tarnished whatever legacy he had. "This very action led to our eventual demise which we have never truly recovered from, despite that league title in 2021. Murray is as much to blame for our downfall as Whyte is." And Liam Birney, Paisley, took issue with the former Ibrox chairman's blast at Celtic chief Peter Lawwell: 'So some Rangers fans are falling for the nonsense that Murray is spouting about Peter Lawwell doing Rangers a wrong. 'Can I remind them all it was under his tenure as Chairman that EBTs were used and that when he sold the club to Whyte for a quid, they were well down the road to liquidation. Also, is it not a Rangers or Celtic objective to bury their biggest rivals? Take some responsibility David!' Meanwhile, Lawrence Shankland's future remains up in the air after he skipped the flight to Hearts' pre-season training camp. But Alan Flett said: 'I'm sick fed-up of hearing that Rangers should sign Shankland. He's no better than what we've already got. 'I'd have Cyriel Dessers over Shankland every day of the week. Michael Beale, Philippe Clement and now Russell Martin have had the opportunity to sign Shankland and none of them did. Doesn't that tell you something?' Regular caller Gordon Ashley ruffled a few feathers with his swipe at Hamza Igamane's potential transfer value. George Wilson, West Sussex, said: 'Rangers-obsessed Gordon Ashley apart from seemingly having insider knowledge about the potential sale of Hamza Igamane says Celtic play at a higher level in Europe. 'Unfortunately they have been a total embarrassment and regularly humiliated in Europe for the last 25 years. 'Last season they suffered several more Champions League hidings and only won three out of 10 games against the absolute worst three side out of 36 teams in the competition. 'Rangers on the other hand played Nice, Lyon, Spurs, Man Utd, Fenerbahce and Athletic Bilbao, who were collectively better than most of the dross Celtic faced.' Alfie Mullin, London, added: 'Gordon Ashley claims that Celtic get higher transfer fees than Rangers do for their players because they play at a higher level in Europe. I suggest he replace the word 'play' with the word 'lose'.' Michael Emonds took aim at another called: 'Once again Jimmy Murray shows his ignorance in his understanding of the Celtic business model - which is to buy players for the right money, improve them and sell at a profit. 'He says the answer is scrap the model and sack serial winner John Kennedy and coach Gavin Strachan, get in new coaches to bring the young players through. 'But he doesn't understand that's the job of the pathway manager, who until recently was Darren O'Dea, who has just left for Swansea City and was last week replaced by Shaun Maloney. So let's see how many hopefuls he can get through the ranks.'

Rangers in ‘concrete talks' to sign winger from Serie A club as they battle English and European sides to land him
RANGERS are preparing to lead Celtic a merry dance next season. That's because they're reportedly chasing a Swiss star by the name of Samuel Ballet. 3 Samuel Ballet in action for FC Zurich Credit: Getty 3 Russell Martin is looking to bolster his attack Credit: Willie Vass The winger, 24, belongs to Italian Serie A club Como but spent last season on loan to FC Zurich. Ballet impressed for the Swiss Super League outfit, scoring three goals and creating two more in 28 appearances. Zurich hope to extend the Bern native's loan by another season. However Como - managed by ex-Arsenal ace Cesc Fabregas - want instead to cash in on him. And a result, Zurich are seriously at risk of losing out on him with another loan to the club labelled a 'distant' prospect. A report from Blick Sports claims that Rangers officials have been holding talks with their Italian opposite numbers about a deal for Ballet. It says that 'concrete talks' are underway with the Ibrox club and other interested parties. English Championship club Norwich and Turkish Super Lig outfit Trabzonspor are also said to be keen on the former Switzerland Under-20 international. Ballet played for Swiss clubs Young Boys, FC Wil and Winterthur before moving to Como in January 2024. But just six months later, he moved on loan to Zurich after making just three appearances in Serie B during Como's promotion success. Sir Sean Connery's secret £1 MILLION investment in Rangers revealed Ballet is expected to report for pre-season training with the Italian club on July 10 as it stands, providing of course he hasn't sealed a transfer. He's still under contract at Como until 2027 but they've been busy adding players to the wide positions this summer, with Celtic's Nicolas Kuhn among those linked. Rangers remain in the hunt for reinforcements on the wings this summer. With Vaclav Cerny having returned to Wolfsburg, it's a position of great need for new Gers boss Russell Martin. Kwame Poku was a target for the Light Blues but he instead joined QPR last week. Midfielder Metinho, who spent last season in Switzerland with Basel, is also a target for Rangers. SunSport exclusively revealed last night how the Gers were ready to strike in their bid to land the midfielder from Troyes. 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
