MFL Cup to remain on hold despite growing calls for its return

The Star3 days ago
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) have confirmed that the MFL Cup will remain on hold for the upcoming season despite growing calls for the return of the competition as a development platform for young talent.
The alarm comes in the wake of Malaysia's early exit from the AFF Under-23 Championship in Indonesia, which reignited concerns over the lack of competitive minutes available for youth players in the Super League - especially with the influx of senior and foreign players.
However, MFL interim chief executive officer Shazly Shaik ( pic ) said the suspension of the MFL Cup was a calculated move to push clubs to integrate young players directly into the senior set-up.
'For the time being, there are no plans to bring back the MFL Cup,' said Shazly.
'We shut down the tournament to ensure these young players are given opportunities in the Super League, where the level of competition will accelerate their growth.
'Previously, we were among the leagues with the oldest average age, partly because youth players were restricted to age-group competitions.
''This change gives us a clearer picture of who's ready to step up.'
Player registrations for the 2024-2025 season are still ongoing for several clubs, and Shazly said the MFL will monitor how teams utilise their youth talent before determining if any new development initiatives are needed later in the season.
Another key update from the MFL is the continued roll-out of Remote VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology, especially in Borneo.
Instead of setting up multiple facilities, a centralised data centre in Kuala Lumpur will handle all VAR operations, including those for matches hosted by teams in East Malaysia.
A team of broadcast and VAR specialists will travel to Brunei from Aug 1- 3 to assess signal strength and readiness.
Brunei is participating in the Super League this season as a guest team, alongside Sabah and Kuching City, who finished third and fourth respectively last year.
Financial concerns remain a hot topic, particularly with Kelantan, who have made headlines over unsettled dues.
Shazly confirmed that the MFL are in regular communication with the club's management, but no formal report has been received yet.

Spain stint spurs winger Arif to take on bigger responsibilities

JDT's Arif Aiman (left) control the ball from Sri Pahang's Muhamad Baquidin during Malaysia Cup final match at National Stadium, Bukit Jalil. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: National winger Arif Aiman Hanapi's time in Spain during the pre-season has prepared him to take on bigger responsibilities ahead of the new season. The 23-year-old, who was captain of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) during the team's pre-season stint in Spain, said the time abroad has further motivated him ahead of the Super League season starting next month. "I'm honoured by the trust placed in me. Rather than taking it as pressure, I saw it as an opportunity for me to prove myself both as a player and leader," said Arif after being announced as sportswear brand Puma's newest ambassador yesterday. "I learned a lot from that experience." Arif said there is no rivalry between local-born and heritage players in the national squad. "The presence of heritage players has been a big help to the team from time to time," he said. Arif also said the players are fully focused on preparing for September's friendlies against Singapore and Palestine, and declined to comment on Malaysia's withdrawal from the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup. "It doesn't affect me, I'm just focused on what lies ahead. Preparation is important, even in a friendly game. We need to be fully prepared for our next matches regardless of who we play," he said. The Harimau Malaya will play friendly matches against Singapore on Sept 4 and Palestine on Sept 8.

Veteran Fazly's back with Selangor – and their defence couldn't feel safer

True Selangor stalwart: Fazly's unwavering spirit and commitment became the driving force behind his return to the Red Giants. PETALING JAYA: In a move that has taken many by surprise, seasoned leftback Fazly Mazlan has rejoined Selangor – a decision that coach Katsuhito Kinoshi openly admits he did not see coming. But despite that, Kinoshi welcomes the move with open arms. 'Yes, I was very surprised when I was informed that he wanted to come back,' said the Japanese tactician. 'But I like him. I really do.' Kinoshi revealed that it was Fazly's unwavering spirit and deep commitment that became the driving force behind his return to the Red Giants. Despite the defender being released from the squad at the end of the season, the coach emphasised that desire trumps all. Fazly had an offer to join Super League newcomers Immigration but Selangor said they needed cover in the fullback spots, and he did not think twice. 'If he truly wants to return, that's what matters most,' Kinoshi said. 'For me, when a player has that kind of hunger, I will always welcome him. I really value that attitude.' But this is not merely about filling a spot on the roster. Kinoshi believes that Fazly, now 31, represents more than just experience - he's a blueprint for longevity and resilience in Malaysian football. 'He can be a role model for younger players. If you play with all your heart, sacrifice for the team, and give 100 percent in every match, you can continue playing well into your 30s - 32, 35 even,' the coach added. Beyond his on-field capabilities, Fazly's return brings much-needed guidance to a transitioning squad. As Selangor look to the future with a new generation of talent, veterans like Fazly serve as the bridge between experience and potential. 'Having senior players like Fazly is not just about technical aspects and experience. It's also about mentoring the younger generation who will one day lead this team,' Kinoshi explained. The timing of his return couldn't be more critical as the Red Giants are preparing for their Charity Shield game against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Aug 8. 'We have a very important match coming up. The presence of experienced players like Fazly is a huge asset for games like this,' Kinoshi said. Fazly's story comes full circle, having once been a key pillar in the Selangor line-up before his release. Now, with shifts in the club's structure and renewed ambitions, he's back to reclaim his place - not just in the team but in the hearts of Selangor fans.
