Andhra Pradesh high court denies anticipatory bail to former YSRCP MLA in derogatory comments case

1 2 Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh high court on Wednesday denied granting anticipatory bail to former YSRCP MLA Nallapureddy Prasanna Kumar Reddy in the case registered against him for making derogatory comments against Kovvur MLA Vemireddy Prashanti Reddy. However, the high court directed the police to follow the guidelines set out by the supreme court in the Arnesh Kumar case, as all the sections included in the FIR are punishable with less than seven years of imprisonment. Prasanna Kumar Reddy moved the high court seeking anticipatory bail after police registered a case against him pursuant to the complaint lodged by Prashanti Reddy. Arguing on behalf of Prasanna Kumar Reddy, senior counsel O Manohar Reddy said that the sections included by the police do not apply to the petitioner and, even otherwise, all the sections are punishable with less than seven years of imprisonment. He said that the comments of Prasanna Kumar Reddy were taken out of context and also pointed out at the mob attack on his house. He said that the police did not register a case even after a complaint was lodged over the vandalisation of his house. Arguing on behalf of the police, public prosecutor Menda Lakshmi Narayana said that the petitioner made derogatory remarks against the woman MLA. He released another video justifying his comments the next day, which shows the conduct of the petitioner and his intent to repeat the offence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search Ads Get Info Undo He said that the Arnesh Kumar guidelines do not prevent the investigation officer from arresting the accused, as it is left to the discretion of the investigating officer whether to arrest an accused or not based on various other parameters. Considering the arguments on both sides, the high court said that granting anticipatory bail would send wrong signal in this type of cases. However, as the sections in the FIR are punishable with less than seven years, the high court directed the police to follow the Arnesh Kumar guidelines and disposed of the petition.

Telugu states decide to form committee to resolve irrigation disputes

Vijayawada: To resolve disputes on irrigation projects involving various technical issues, the chief ministers of both Telugu states on Wednesday decided to constitute a committee with irrigation experts, officials from both states, and the Central Water Commission (CWC). The Union Jal Shakti minister, CR Patil, held a coordination meeting with the chief ministers of AP and Telangana, officials from the irrigation department, and the CWC on Wednesday to discuss the pending issues between the states. Though the controversial Polavaram–Banakacharla project was also on the agenda, the meeting ended without much discussion on it. Telangana, which opposes the project, informed the Union Jal Shakti Ministry that it is not willing to participate in any discussion on the project. However, Andhra Pradesh irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu announced that the high-power committee, to be constituted within a week, will also deal with the Banakacharla project. Ramanaidu said that the committee will examine the technical aspects involved in the Banakacharla project and also the surplus water in the Godavari river going into the sea (about 3000 tmc ft of water) every year. He said that the committee will also examine the ongoing projects in both states and will suggest steps to be taken to resolve the issues amicably between the two states. The meeting brought consensus on three major issues. Both states agreed to install telemetry meters to measure the outflow going into the canals from reservoirs shared by both states. Both states also agreed upon the repair works to be undertaken at the Srisailam plunge pool. The third decision taken in the meeting was that both states agreed to set up the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) in Hyderabad and the Krishna River Water Management Board (KRMB) in Amaravati.

Elaborate security arrangements in place for bandh today

Bhubaneswar: Police have made elaborate security arrangements across the state, especially in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, in view of the 12-hour Odisha bandh called by Congress and seven other organisations on Thursday, seeking a fair probe into the self-immolation of a 20-year-old student in Balasore. Speaking to media persons, police commissioner S Dev Dutta Singh said, "We will not allow any kind of violence or untoward incident during the bandh. Political parties have the liberty to protest in a democracy, but our top priority remain the safety of the public." Commissionerate police plans to deploy AI-based surveillance drone cameras to monitor the movement of the protesters. Additional arrangements are also being made to guard key govt installations such as Lok Seva Bhawan, AG office, and offices and residences of key ministers and officials. Looking at the growing tensions and the protest by BJD on Wednesday in Bhubaneswar which turned violent, police are taking extra caution, sources said. The home department has issued an advisory for govt employees to reach their offices before 9:30am positively. On the day, visitors will not be allowed at Lok Seva Bhawan while checks of ID cards of the employees will be intensified, the advisory added. All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba said it would be a peaceful protest, and the primary agenda is to "wake up a sleepy govt". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Flexible Program BITS Pilani Digital Apply Now Undo "We seek justice for the girl and demand safety and security for the girls and women of the state. There is a need to instil fear in the minds of criminals who are responsible for such atrocities on women," Lamba said. Criticising the state govt, Lamba said the girl who bravely confronted her tormentors should be saluted. "She knocked on all possible doors for justice. If she received support on time, such a valuable life wouldn't have been lost. The brave girl was asked to compromise, but she didn't bow her head down and continued the fight," she said. Earlier, state Congress president Bhakta Charan Das said that as part of the bandh, all schools, colleges, universities and vehicular movements would be stopped. He said they had urged the transport unions, employees' federations, traders' unions, and people to cooperate in the protest for safeguarding democracy and ensuring women's safety.
