Ruby-Red 1956 Porsche 356A on Bring a Trailer Is a Jewel
This example looks factory fresh but has significant performance upgrades.

Long before the 911 emerged, early Porsches made a name for the brand by doing more with less. When the 356 won its class at Le Mans in 1951, the world sat up and took notice, and it wasn't long before importer Max Hoffman had established the pride of Stuttgart as an institution on this side of the Atlantic. Thing is, a 1950s Porsche 356 is still very much a car of its time, with performance that might not match modern traffic. Not so with this 1956 356A for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos). It's been restored and discreetly updated with tasteful improvements to make the driving experience match the looks.So-called "outlaw" 356s are an established trend by now, the form kicked off by customizer Rod Emory in his California-based shop. But while many of Emory's 356s defy the rules to build full-on Porsche hot-rods, this car is all about the hidden details. It's even finished in the original factory paint color, a rich Polyantha Red.
From the outside, only 15-inch Boyd Coddington wheels and a custom dual exhaust hint that there's anything non-stock going on here. Those wheels hide disc brakes at all four corners—early 356 drum brakes can be a bit alarming when you suddenly spot a deer crossing the road—and the braking system is further upgraded with some 911 parts.On the inside, GT-style bucket seats and a Nardi steering wheel are the highlights of a complete reworking, including new carpeting and refreshing the dashboard. The instrumentation is rebuilt, the chrome redone, and the tachometer converted to electric operation.
The 356A marked the first time the twin-cam Carrera engine was available in a road car, but the largest displacement available at the time was 1.6 liters. This car gets a built up 2.2-liter flat-four for far more torque, especially lower in the rev range, and peak power of 160 horsepower at 6000 rpm. Built by FAT Performance, also based in California, this engine is a howler, and should provide considerable shove in a car that weighs around 2000 pounds.The four-speed manual transmission is also reworked, with short gearing except for fourth, which is a longer "freeway flyer" gear for cruising. This is a fantastic-looking little car in a great color combination, but the real appeal here is the driving experience, supported by performance parts from the best suppliers out there.
While it's perhaps overshadowed by the 911 as the most recognizable Porsche, the 356 is a very special car to drive, impressive even after nearly 75 years. This one takes that performance and remasters it for 2025, while keeping the 1950s-era charm. Besides, everyone's doing 911 restomods these days. Why not grab a Porsche from the time when it was first putting the world on notice?

This 2001 Type R has ultra-low miles, is in impeccable condition, and is one of not many to be built for the U.S. market. Around 25 years later, the current bid for this iconic compact is sitting at $120,000. You can buy two brand-new Integra Type S models with a 355-horsepower V6 and still have plenty left over for that amount. There's still something irreplaceable about this 2001 model's four rounded headlights, sporty two-door shape, and cheeky rear wing, though, especially in this eye-catching Phoenix Yellow paint. The prominent Type R badging makes it instantly recognizable. Under the hood is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated for 195 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque. The buzzy VTEC engine is paired to a sweet five-speed manual gearbox, and there's also a limited-slip differential. At the time, this was considered one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive cars available anywhere, a legacy that Honda continues to live up to with today's Civic Type R. The simple gauges show a tachometer that goes all the way up to 10,000 rpm, a wonderful reminder of high-revving, naturally-aspirated engines. The Acura comes with air conditioning, an audio system with six speakers, power windows, dual front airbags, power mirrors, and a center armrest with the Type R badge. This particular example is #1,086 of just 1,173 examples built for the United States, and it's hard to imagine that any of the others are in better shape. A clean CarFax report and title add peace of mind, as does the fact that the battery and hydraulic fluids were replaced in 2022. The engine oil was last changed back in 2020, so that's something the lucky new owner will want to look at, despite the low mileage. It's going to be fascinating to see if the winning bid exceeds $120k, and we'll know the answer to that soon. Last week, on a second-quarter Tesla earnings call, the man himself, Elon Musk let the cat out of the bag when he said, 'It's just a Model Y.' Really? What does that mean? Could it mean that it's just a stripped down Model Y? And what about the future of the federal tax credit? Let's face it: Tesla is the only American automaker capable of producing a high-end, realistic, appealing electric vehicle for less than $30,000. And if they have to bring the car back to bare bones to make it sell, then that's what they'll do, apparently. People just don't have enough money to buy Teslas now Musk expanded by saying that, 'The desire to buy our cars is very high. It's just that people don't have enough money in the bank to buy them. More ANDERSEN/AFP via Getty Images) Then he revealed how potential buyers can possibly offset the purchase price of their car by 'releasing their car to the fleet and have it earn money for them,' suggesting that people may 'lend' their cars back to Tesla in a type of robotaxi relationship perhaps. Musk then went out on a limb by saying he's confident that 'I think this will happen next year in the U.S. at least.' His comments though raise more questions than provide answers. By saying 'it's just a Model Y,' does he mean a 'new' Y with upgraded parts but based on the old platform, which would help to keep costs down? What we do know is that the more affordable Model Y, as referred to by Musk, should be surfacing in Q4 this year. But that will be long after the $7,500 federal tax credit ends—which will make it even tougher for Tesla to get the price down to the sub-$30,000 level that Musk seems to be alluring to. Let's have a quick look at Tesla's current pricing. Today, the Model Y rear-wheel drive variant costs $44,990, which when you factor in the $7,500, drops the price to $37,490. But with that tax credit gone, and we expect it to disappear very soon under the Trump Administration, the price for a current model Y will hover around $44,000. So for Musk to achieve his goal of achieving a sub-$30,000, he will need to find $15,000 worth of savings in specs and features. The question is—which features to strip back? If it's going to be used as some kind of robotaxi, then it will need all of its AutoPilot features. And given that the Y has been rated as one of the safest on the road by Euro NCAP, ANCAP and IIHS, Tesla would not want to skimp on safety features in any way—which would make it difficult to reduce pricing. But Musk has pushed the boundaries of car tech in the past and redefined the genre, so we will give him some latitude and wait for further updates even if his car sales are hurting all over the planet.

2015 BMW 3-Series Wagon on Bring a Trailer Is Built to M3 Spec
BMW never built an M3 wagon for the North American market. Here's one anyway. Virtually OEM inside and out, it's the hot Munich longroof we all wished for. This car is CARB certified and fully approved by California's Bureau of Automotive Repair. BMW's decision to bring the wagon version of the current M5 to this side of the Atlantic probably doesn't make a lot of sense to the company's accountants, but it's great for the fans. Uber-fast sedans are great, but there's something cooler about a wagon variant. It's a shame Bimmer didn't do the same with the M3. Bring a Trailer But wait, Bavarian sports wagon fans! Here's a 2015 BMW 328i xDrive wagon, fully converted to F80-series M3 specification, and it's up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos). It's got the twin-turbo inline-six, the wider track with fenders and bumper covers, and best of all, a six-speed manual transmission so you can row your own gears while you laminate a labradoodle to the back window. Bring a Trailer Conversions can be hit or miss sometimes, but this one looks like it was factory-built in Munich. The exterior and mechanical upgrades are all OEM, and the interior of the M3 has been largely swapped over as well. It's got CARB approval, certification by the sometimes fussy California Bureau of Automotive Repair, and a modest 63K miles on the odometer. Bring a Trailer The M3 donor car was a Competition package model, which means the S55 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six makes a hearty 444 horsepower. Formerly equipped with BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive, it's now rear-wheel drive with a limited-slip differential, and fitted with M3 subframes and chassis bracing. Bring a Trailer The car rides on M3 Competition-spec 20-inch wheels, fitted with Michelin tires, and the suspension and brakes are also M3 grade. The only aftermarket addition appears to be a set of KW height-adjustable springs. A 328i wagon of this generation is a pretty likable car all by itself, and as BMW no longer sends the touring version of the 3-series to North America, they're holding their value well. This car gets you something unique, all the firepower of a proper M3, but with extra carrying capacity and cool factor. For the winning bidder on this auction, the fact that BMW never built an M3 wagon for the U.S. market isn't a drawback but a bonus. Bimmer fans are going to go nuts when you roll up in it at your local German car show. The auction ends on July 30.
