Anisimova vows to hit practice courts after reaching last 16

LONDON - American Amanda Anisimova became the first American through to the last-16 of this year's Wimbledon with a 6-3 5-7 6-3 defeat of Hungary's Dalma Galfi on Friday.
Not that the 13th seed was too impressed by her Independence Day display on a sunny Court Three.
"It was an incredibly tough match but I kept fighting," the 23-year-old, one of five American women to reach the third round, said on court. "I think the quality wasn't that great today but I will hit the practice courts tomorrow."
Anisimova, a quarter-finalist in 2022, secured the decisive break of serve in the first set with a stunning lob to lead 5-3.
She had chances near the end of the second set too but was pegged back as 110th-ranked Galfi dug deep to break serve at 5-6 and set up a decider.
Anisimova let out a big scream as she broke serve early in the third set with a wrong-footing forehand and an even louder one when she saved a break point when leading 3-2.
Another break of serve put Anisimova in complete control but at 5-2 she double-faulted on break point down to give Galfi hope. But it did not prove costly for the American who sealed the win a game later to move through. REUTERS

Gill's unbeaten 100, following his first-innings double century (269), took him past compatriot Sunil Gavaskar's 344 runs in a single test against the West Indies in 1971. India are yet to declare with four sessions left, but England already face a mountain that has been climbed by only four teams in test history -- chasing a fourth-innings target of over 400 for victory. After Gill lost his vice-captain Rishabh Pant (65) following a 110-run partnership, Ravindra Jadeja (25 not out) joined him at the crease. Just as in the first innings -- in which they shared a 203-run stand -- they frustrated the England bowlers with a 68-run partnership to take India's total to 304-4. In the first session, Brydon Carse had Karun Nair caught behind while KL Rahul crafted a patient 55 before Josh Tongue struck with a ball that seamed off the pitch to go past the Indian batter's defence and hit the stumps. Tongue's delight was short-lived, however, as Pant walked in and unsettled the fast bowler with a boundary before he danced down the track to smash it over his head for six. Pant survived when, on 10, he smashed the ball straight to mid off where Zak Crawley spilled the catch, and he made the bowlers pay with a flurry of fours and another six. He also sent his willow flying to square leg where it landed safely, much to the amusement of the Edgbaston crowd, but not the England bowlers who saw their momentum halted after a productive first hour. Pant brought up their 100-run partnership in 89 balls when he smashed Tongue for another six which also took India's lead past 400. Pant lost his bat with another extravagant shot after lunch, but this time he skied the ball to long off where Ben Duckett took the catch. England did chase down 371 to win the first test by five wickets and their highest successful chase came at this ground three years ago when they made 378 to beat India. Elder Jose Arteaga, known as El Costeño, was arrested on suspicion of inducing the 15-year-old charged with shooting the politician at a rally in Colombia's capital Bogota on June 7 to commit the crime, the sources said. Arteaga, who the two sources said has a long criminal record, was detained in a neighborhood in western Bogota, a day after Colombian police said Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest. Colombian police chief Carlos Fernando Triana said in a post on social media on Friday that Arteaga was wanted for "aggravated attempted homicide; manufacture, trafficking and carrying of firearms or ammunition; and use of minors for the commission of crimes." Uribe - a 39-year-old presidential pre-candidate for the conservative opposition Democratic Center party - was shot twice in the head and once in his left leg, according to state prosecutors. He has undergone several serious surgeries since the attack, which left him in critical condition. On a blustery Court Two, Tauson - previously winless in three main-draw visits to the All England Club - barely put a toe out of line, breezing through their rain-interrupted duel 7-6(6) 6-3. "It was amazing to play here, even though it was a little rainy," Tauson said. "I don't know what to say. I played a really great match. Before the grass season started, I'd never won a match on grass so I'm super proud and happy with the way I played today."
