Performance-enhancing drugs are everywhere on social media, says Syarul

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Syarul Azman Mahen Abdullah, a six-time World and Asian bodybuilding champion, is deeply concerned by how easy it is to buy banned performance-enhancing drugs in Malaysia today.
Syarul said sales of such drugs online, especially on social media, have become rampant and fears users could seriously harm themselves.
He urged the government to take stern action to prevent the issue from getting worse.
"There are so many performance enhancing drugs available on social media today, I have even had people offer such drugs to me," said Syarul when met today (May 26).
"Sometimes I check the people or accounts who are following me on social media.
"I get shocked at times when I check and see that they are actually selling all sorts of these performance-enhancing substances.
"Newcomers to the sport might see this as a shortcut and try to use these substances. It can affect their health very seriously and can even cause a heart attack.
"These are actually drugs which are meant to be used under strict doctor supervision in hospitals.
"In the past, you had to go to the gym and try and talk to people to get such substances but now, everything is done online.
"The government has to do something to stop this. I believe the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) can do something about it."
Syarul said growth hormones, peptides and anabolic steroids among the performance-enhancing substances commonly sold.
Syarul retired from competitive bodybuilding last year and currently coaches the national bodybuilding team.
He was speaking after attending the launch of the Drug Free Youth Campaign awareness video in Kuala Lumpur today (May 26) - officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh - in cooperation with TGV Cinemas.
TGV Cinemas will from now be screening a short drug awareness video before movies are shown at their cinemas nationwide. This is to create greater awareness regarding the dangers of recreational drug use.

Zii Jia appears fine in first public appearance in China

New role: Zii Jia turns up as an umpire during a fun exhibition match as he makes a surprise public appearance at the Victor brand conference and new product launch in China on Sunday. - Pix by Victor PETALING JAYA: Is men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia truly getting better, or has he actually been fine all along? After nearly two weeks of speculation among badminton fans around the world about the former Asian champion's condition, Zii Jia made a surprise public appearance at the Victor brand conference and new product launch in China on Sunday. Zii Jia was one of the featured faces of the badminton brand, modelling the new collection for the 2026 season on a runway. Other notable appearances at the event included 2024 Paris Olympic gold medallists Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong, who have both retired, as well as former men's doubles player Li Junhui, who was reunited with his old partner Liu Yuchen. Also present was Indonesia's men's singles player Jonatan Christie. Following the event, he didn't just attend a fan meet-and-greet session but also took part in a friendly exhibition match, where he even served as the umpire. However, concerns remain over his fitness. He has been unable to compete in any tournaments for more than three months due to an ankle injury sustained in December last year. Zii Jia, who had skipped the back-to-back Japan and China Opens, has qualified for the World Championships in Paris next month.

Kho Kho expands global presence with debut in Singapore

Singapore City [Singapore], July 20 (ANI): In a landmark step toward globalising one of India's oldest indigenous sports, Kho Kho made its debut in Singapore, marking an iconic day for the sport in the country. An exhibition match was played between the Kho Kho Association of Singapore and the Kho Kho Association of Malaysia, in which the national side of Singapore made its first appearance against the Malaysian side, who had participated in the inaugural edition of the Kho Kho World Cup 2025, held in India. The landmark event on Friday was organised by the Asian Kho Kho Federation (AKKF) in association with the Kho Kho Association of Singapore (KKAS) at Jurong West Secondary School. The full-day event aimed to introduce and promote Kho Kho in the country through a blend of training sessions, theory presentations, and exhibition matches. Speaking on the occasion, Sudhanshu Mittal, President, International Kho Kho Federation (IKKF) and Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) said, as per a KKFI press release, 'Today is a historic day for Kho Kho as we mark its official debut in Singapore. The establishment of the Asian Kho Kho Federation here signifies the beginning of the sport's expansion not only in Southeast Asia but across the entire Asian continent. From school clinics to international fixtures like Malaysia vs Singapore, the momentum is real. Kho Kho is a game like no other, combining agility, speed, reflexes, and stamina in a way that no other sport does. We are proud that this growth is being led by committed and competent hands.' A clinical session was conducted by officials of the Kho Kho Association of Malaysia, attended by 180 kids from different parts of Singapore. This was followed by theoretical presentations and a practical training workshop, which involved teaching fundamental skills, rules, and strategies of Kho Kho. A friendly match was then played between the kids to test the skills they had learned from the clinic. Berbatov urges more Asian players to get on board to play abroad

the Liga 7X7 Zurich matches. Dimitar Berbatov. 19 JULY 2025 —CHAN TAK KONG/The Star PETALING JAYA: Former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov has encouraged Asian footballers to dream bigger and push themselves to compete in top-tier European leagues - including the Premier League - as he reflected on his admiration for Asian football culture and his own experiences in global football. Berbatov, speaking before the start of the Liga 7x7 All-Stars tournament at the Cheras Football Stadium yesterday, praised the enthusiasm for the game in the region and called on young players to embrace the challenge of playing abroad. "I used to play with Park Ji-sung at Manchester United, and he's like a god in this part of the world," said the Bulgarian legend. "I wish more players from here would go abroad and play in the big European clubs. It's good for them, it's good for their country, and it helps raise the reputation of Asian football globally." Berbatov emphasised that technical ability and mental strength are crucial qualities for young players looking to break through at the highest levels. "To become a good player, you need ambition, focus, and yes - a bit of stubbornness - especially when things get tough. It's not easy, but that's what separates the great from the good.' Berbatov also took time to praise the rising popularity of small-sided football formats, such as five-a-side and seven-a-side tournaments that are growing rapidly around the world, including across Asia. "I always love coming back here. This is already my second time this year. When it's about football - and when you love football - even if we are a bit older now, we still want to play. It's a great idea, and we're here to entertain and have fun." He noted that small-sided football has always been popular in Bulgaria, where he grew up playing in tight spaces that helped him develop the famed technical skill that defined his career. "Formats like this help promote technical ability. The game is quicker, the spaces are tighter - it's great for developing control and vision. Maybe some of the rules today are a bit extreme,' he joked. "But I'll get to experience them myself." When asked about who he believes will win the Premier League title this coming season, Berbatov remained diplomatic but admitted the competition will be intense. "I want to say Manchester United, of course. And Tottenham - I used to play for both. But it will be difficult. "Liverpool are always contenders. Manchester City - for sure. There are a lot of strong teams that will fight for it. But honestly, I don't know who will win. We'll see." As one of the Premier League's most elegant forwards of his generation, Berbatov now uses his platform to promote football globally - and he believes the next big star could easily emerge from Asia, if players here are willing to take the leap. "If you have the talent, go abroad. Test yourself. That's how you grow and that's how the world sees what you can do."
