Japan's Imagica Group Selects ‘Maria' As First Project For Financing Scheme Supported By Hirokazu Kore-eda
The film will be produced by Hana Tsuchikawa, who has worked in production on live-action films by Takashi Miike and other directors, as well as working as a line producer on U.S., UK and other foreign co-productions.

Imagica Group, one of Japan's leading post-production and VFX companies, has committed to co-financing five director-driven films from emerging Japanese filmmakers over the next five years. The company said it would invest up to $500,000 (JYP70m) in the first selected film.
Kore-eda, who won the Cannes Palme d'Or in 2018 for Shoplifters, is on the jury selecting the projects along with Shozo Ichiyama, programming director of the Tokyo International Film Festival, and Yuka Sakano, head of international relations for the Kawakita Memorial Film Institute.
Terada, who is also a social worker, moved into filmmaking in 2020 and has worked as an assistant director to Kore-eda and other filmmakers.
Her script for Maria follows a young woman in a nondescript, industrial area of Japan who finds herself pregnant with no chance of asking her absent boyfriend or family for support. With nowhere to turn, she approaches a local youth, who is working in a care home and dealing drugs on the side, to see if they can team up to make some money.
Imagica Group president and CEO Shunjiro Nagase unveiled the scheme – the company's first foray into production launched to celebrate its 90th anniversary – at an event in the Cannes Marche today. Filmmakers can apply for the funding by partnering with a producer who belongs to an Imagica Group company, which include Robot Communication Inc, P.I.C.S. and OLM.
Nagase said: 'The purpose of this project, launched on this milestone, is to provide the next generation of filmmakers with a place to work and to open up new possibilities for Japanese cinema.
'It is our responsibility and investment in the future to create an environment where producers within our group, as well as young directors and filmmakers from Japan and abroad, can freely challenge and express themselves. International film festivals in Europe and elsewhere are highly acclaimed for works depicting social issues and unique artistic expressions, but in Japan, there are still high hurdles to overcome in order to produce such works.'
Kore-eda said: 'I sympathize with Imagica Group's efforts to discover the talents of the next generation in the film industry and nurture them to become active on the world stage. I joined this project to see what I can do to help.'

‘Fubar' Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons

The decision comes about a month and a half after Season 2 launched on the platform on June 12. It follows surprisingly soft performance for the series, which, likely fueled by Schwarzenegger's global star power, had a strong series launch in May 2023 and also stars Monica Barbaro who became an Oscar nominee between Seasons 1 and 2 for A Complete Unknown. It's serving meatloaf, chicken with horseradish sauce, and icebox cakes. CAPITOL HILL — Pitch the Baby, the second-ever women's sports bar in Seattle, is now open. Sister restaurant Condesa, which used to be a popular takeout window before it closed years ago, will reopen soon, but in the meantime you can get Mexican snacks and small plates alongside drinks. QUEEN ANNE — Six months after neighborhood institution Queen Anne Cafe closed, buzzy Capitol Hill Pizzeria Cornelly has opened its second location in the space. Expect lines at peak hours for this no-reservations place. QUEEN ANNE — For a different flavor of pizza in Queen Anne there's Swing. That's a new 'za and sandwiches joint that's notable for its $3.50 slices, which now counts as a bargain in Seattle? BALLARD — Just down the street from Radiator is another meat-focused restaurant, Little Beast, an upscale English-style pub and eatery from Beast and Cleaver owner Kevin Smith. (We're already celebrating its meat pies.) So if you're in Ballard, should you eat at Little Beast or Radiator? That's a real carnivore's dilemma. SOUTH PARK — El Rey Peruvian Restaurant, one of the few restaurants in the Seattle area serving that style of cuisine, is now open in South Park. (There's another restaurant with the same name in Lynwood, but the two appear to be unaffiliated.) WALLINGFORD — The already crowded Japanese food scene in this neighborhood is now even more crowded thanks to Sushi Taiyo. It doesn't have a website but the Seattle Times reports that it's been 'packed.' WALLINGFORD — And there's another new Japanese restaurant in Wallingford, Daruma Sando, which specializes in pork and chicken katsu. CHINATOWN–INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT — And speaking of Vietnamese cuisine, La Ka Saigon, a spot serving street food and milk tea, is now open on Jackson Street. CAPITOL HILL — A lively bar with street, Gol Mok Korean Market Bar has opened on Pike Street in the heart of Capitol Hill. It's owned by the same folks behind nearby Meat Korean BBQ. REDMOND — Japanese restaurant Momoji has opened a second location on the Eastside, in a mixed-used building next to the Downtown Redmond light rail station. As with the Capitol Hill location, it serves a standard selection of Japanese standards like sushi, sashimi, and yakisoba. PIONEER SQUARE — Day Made, a small cafe on the edge of Pioneer Square, is now open and serving the usual coffee drinks (and matcha), alongside primo baked goods from Ben's Bread. ALKI — Taking over the old Locust Cider space is the accurately, if unimaginatively named Seaside Grille, which serves mainly burgers and sandwiches. CAPITOL HILL — Colibri Mexican Kitchen has opened in the former Plum Bistro space, reports Capitol Hill Seattle Blog, with 'large portions and full plates.' Looks like a lot of steak on the menu too. UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — In a move that absolutely makes sense vibes-winse, juice-and-sandwich joint Joe and the Juice is open inside the swanky outdoor shopping complex.
