How We Pulled It Off: A Big, Fat Gay Wedding in Bogotá, Colombia

The love shared between Priscila Garcia-Jacquier and Lio Sigerson, two screenwriters who are now based in Los Angeles, was undeniably fated—though they tried to ignore it as long as they possibly could. They were introduced by a mutual friend at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, when Lio was a student and Priscila a high-school senior visiting the campus. Jetting off for a Colombia destination wedding was just as meant to be.
'He was just like, 'Oh God, you're both these mean, pretty girls who are bossy [theater] directors from big cities. You guys need to meet,' says Priscila, who was born in Bogotá, Colombia. 'We pretty much fell in love instantly,' says Lio, who is from New York City. Over the course of many years—and a lot of flirting, kissing, tears, estrangements, and semi-serious marriage proposals written on class notes—the pair finally got together for good in 2021, and were engaged in April 2022.
'[Colombia] is where I feel the most at home, of anywhere in the world,' says Priscila. 'I wanted to be able to, for the first time, bring all of my American people there to understand me a little better.'
After visiting Bogotá herself and seeing how her fiancée lit up there, Lio was completely on board. 'Of course everybody who loves you deserves to have this experience that I'm having—getting to see you be your fullest self, in your home,' she says. Even with Priscila's connection to the place and her grasp of the culture and language, planning a wedding there from their home in Los Angeles was not without its hurdles. Ahead, the couple explain how they plotted an immersive, rowdy, utterly romantic celebration for 90 guests in Bogotá last August.
The couple's first stop was finding a planner, which sadly proved more difficult than anticipated. 'While gay marriage is completely legal in Colombia, and even has more protections than in the States, I will say it's still not totally accepted culturally. I actually got shut down a lot,' Priscila says. 'People would say, 'Oh, we're so happy for you. Unfortunately, we do not perform or plan any 'egalitarian' weddings.''
Only more determined, Lio dug further into internet research and found Juanita Suzunaga, who founded the LGBT-focused wedding-planning firm Proudly Weds. 'I think I manifested her. There was not a corny rainbow to be found [in her portfolio], so chic,' says Lio. 'She jumped right in right away and was horrified that anybody had rejected us. She made us feel so taken care of, instantly.'
Juanita was quickly tasked with venue options, though the couple's vision once again brushed up against the realities of Bogotá. 'I wanted to get married some place that felt like a hacienda, that old Spanish vibe, but it's a very modern city, with very modern architecture,' says Lio. Their new planner gently pointed out that the only way to nail down that look was by seeking bigger houses in more rural areas, but the pair were dead-set on staying within the city limits.
Then Juanita took a closer look at Lio's Pinterest board and realized she recognized one of the venues—Compañía Casa de Rey, a soaring restaurant set inside an old house with exposed brick, multiple courtyards, a veranda, and a mezzanine overlooking a bright atrium, located in the colonial neighborhood of La Candelaria. Plus, it had availability for their event. 'It was kismet,' Lio says. They opted for a buyout and took over the restaurant for all their wedding-day events, maximizing the venue's side rooms and spaces. 'We wanted people to be in the space long enough that they could go off into corners and have more intimate times together, stretch out,' says Priscila. 'Juanita set up a couch and seating area for everyone to sit and relax if they wanted to chat.'
The couple readied their loved ones for the big trip with a series of emails addressing the big things like flights and hotels, as well as just about every detail they could think of. 'I'm extremely type A and very meticulous,' Priscila says. 'A month before the wedding, I sent an email with 'Here's the packing list I recommend. Here's the sunscreen you need. Here's where to change your money. Here's the best curb to grab a cab outside the airport.'' While some family members gently suggested the emails might be received as condescendingly detailed to their well-traveled guest list, they decided to err on the side of being too informative. That attention paid off when everyone's travel went off without a hitch.
In addition to logistics, Priscila was careful to provide cultural explanations. 'Here are all the stereotypes I'm going to be breaking for you,' she remembers, though she wasn't just referring to any negative ideas folks might have had about Colombia's political past. Instead, it was about things like climate—seated at a high altitude in the Andes, the city would be quite cool even in August—and fashion. 'It's an abnormally formal city,' Priscila says. 'If you wear sandals or shorts, people will look at you weird. Bogotá is a more conservative town.'
Guests needed to pack well, because once they arrived, the couple had designed quite a four-day weekend. On Thursday evening, the celebration kicked off with a welcome drink near Parque de la 93, at Vista Corona, with drinks and small bites at a rooftop bar with a panoramic view of the city for sunset. 'It's a city with the most unbelievable mountain views you've ever seen, so we wanted to greet everybody with a view of the city behind us,' says Lio. From there, the group headed to Andrés DC, a famous restaurant-night club with live music and seven floors themed around Dante's Inferno. 'We were just passing around tequila shots to our 90 guests dancing to traditional cumbia until 4am,' says Priscila. 'It really set the stage!'
Friday morning, Priscila and Lio arranged a walking tour of Bogotá with TK TOUR COMPANY. 'They give you the context of the city and its politics. It was sort of radical, which is important to me—not to whitewash the city and its very complicated history,' Priscila says. 'I think if you're bringing your guests that far, you kind of owe it to them to sightsee.' That night, there was a more intimate dinner for just their closest friends and wedding parties at Harry Sasson, the eponymous fine-dining restaurant of one of the country's most famous chefs.
Saturday was the wedding day, and on Sunday, they held a farewell brunch at the Four Seasons, one of three hotels in the same neighborhood where they'd blocked off rooms for guests. The goal, says Priscila, was to show off the diversity of her beloved city through its most famous spots and neighborhoods. 'I didn't care about flower arrangements. I cared about showing people Bogotá and making the biggest splash possible,' she says.
The flower arrangements by Flowerland were more Lio's domain. 'I wanted something that was extremely verdant. Because we were going to be inside all day, I wanted to bring the outside in,' she explains. 'I think the typical wedding florals are, I don't know how else to put this but: fluffy? I wanted things that felt eclectic, and I love color, but not kitschy color.' Lio also wanted to juxtapose the lived-in, antique-y texture of the restaurant, in which stucco was breaking away in spots to reveal tile underneath, with fresh, lush floral arrangements.
Another modern touch, which Lio's dad was against, were a half dozen disco balls hung from the ceiling. 'Disco balls at a wedding may be a little bit of a cliche, but guess what? They make everyone look amazing on the dance floor,' she laughs.
The ceremony was made entirely unique by their choice of officiant. 'We picked a very handsome, 6'3 German-Italian bisexual theater director—the same person who introduced us in college, Ben. He is one of our best friends,' says Lio. 'He's a writer himself, too, so the ceremony he put together was so lovely.' He did such a great job that a pair of Lio's parents' friends even asked if they could hire him for their daughter's wedding.
As they held their wedding in a restaurant, working out the food was easy. 'The food in Colombia is so delicious. Specifically, the red meat is so fresh, and the produce is like nothing else you've ever had in your life,' says Lio. 'We wanted to give people really hearty, delicious food.' Among the passed hors d'oeuvres were mini empanadas and chicharrón, while dinner offered giant pieces of salmon and full ribeye steaks. For dessert, there was a chocolate cake from a local, trans-owned bakery, as well as a croquembouche, in a nod to Priscila's partially French heritage.
The music by DJ Winston Howard featured reggaeton—'I'm a reggaeton friend,' Priscila says—but also the hits of the couple's past. 'I wanted the songs that we danced to from middle school to college, just bops,' says Lio. 'So it was a combination of Daddy Yankee, the Backstreet Boys, and Kendrick Lamar.'
There was one more dish, served on the dance floor, to sate their guests later into the evening. 'We had passed cups of soup to keep people dancing and revive them at the end of the night,' Lio says of the 'very, very, very traditional' Colombian soup (and beloved hangover cure) called caldo de Costilla. When she shared the plan with American friends before the wedding, they thought it would be too weird. 'But everyone loved it. They were so happy to have something warm and delicious and nourishing to offset all that dancing.'
The sustenance was needed, as dancing carried on until 3:00 am. There was no need for an after-party, as the venue expected the wedding itself to go on that long, unlike the typical end point for American weddings.
It's been less than a year since Priscila and Lio's wedding, but the highlights keep coming. 'We've had multiple guests, since our wedding, book trips and go to Colombia in the last year: 'We loved it so much we had to go back,'' Lio says. 'We were like, Ahh, we've succeeded!''

Travel from Madrid to Seville on a luxury historic train For the 2026 season, the Al Ándalus train will run between April and October with trips of seven days and six nights. You can choose to follow the itinerary in either direction, from Madrid to Seville or vice versa. During the dreamy journey, passengers stop at some of Spain's most magnificent cities and storied attractions. In the La Mancha region, there is a visit to an artisanal cheese factory and a wine cellar, while in Jerez de la Frontera, guests attend the show a famous equestrian ballet set to Spanish music. A luxury coach accompanies the train along the entire route to facilitate excursions, and a multilingual guide is present throughout the journey. Sleep in 1930s carriages on board the Al Ándalus train The experience on board is a fabulous time-warp. The suites and rooms are inside carriages that were built in France at the beginning of the last century to take the members of the British monarchy between Calais and the Côte d'Azur. There are two accommodation categories to choose from - a Deluxe Suite or a Grand Class Room - both of which are clad in decorated veneer panels and feature en-suites. There are also four lounge cars dating from 1928 and 1930, which dazzle with scarlet velvet upholstery and soft gilded lighting. In the restaurant, dishes exalt Spanish ingredients like olive oil, sherry wine, and Jabugo Iberian ham. Live music and a gala dinner Of course, this kind of opulence doesn't come cheap. The cost per person for two sharing a Deluxe Suite is €7,900, while for a Grand Class room, it is €6,600. While it's a hefty sum, it does include admission to all scheduled visits and all breakfasts, lunches and dinners, whether served onboard or in select local restaurants. 5 new to Netflix movies I'm adding to my watchlist in August 2025

Netflix has confirmed its slate for August 2025, and the streaming service's movie library has been well stocked with plenty of fresh additions. Among the newcomers this month are some cinematic classics, and for action-obsessives, a slew of 'Fast & Furious' films will arrive midway through the month. There will be plenty of new Netflix originals over the next several weeks as well, but in this article, I'm looking at the new library titles, which include the legendary 'Jurassic Park' (and it's much less impressive sequels), alongside a quintessential teen comedy that remains just as hilarious, and painfully relatable, even if the High School experience has changed. Let's dive into the five new to Netflix movies that I believe are most worthy of your attention this month. It's pretty much impossible to properly summarize the legacy of 'Jurassic Park.' The highest-grossing film ever made at the time of its release in 1993, and spawning half a dozen sequels (the latest is still playing in theatres), its reputation is as legendary as the T Rex that adorns its iconic poster. This sci-fi action-adventure broke new ground upon release and hasn't aged a bit. Decades later, it remains among the most beloved blockbusters ever. If you somehow don't know the basic plot of 'Jurassic Park' (have you been fossilized in amber since the '90s?), It's set within a vast theme park full of cloned dinosaurs. When a small group, including Alan Grant (Sam Neil), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), is given the chance to tour the park before its grand opening to the public. This dream experience becomes a prehistoric nightmare when the dinosaurs break free and go on a rampage. Oh, and goosebumps are guaranteed when the classic theme kicks in. Watch "Jurassic Park" on Netflix now 'The Departed' is quite the rarity in Hollywood. It's an American remake of 2002's 'Infernal Affairs,' but it's no cheap rehash. Instead, it's a multi-Oscar winner helmed by one of the greatest filmmakers in history, Martin Scorsese, and packing a truly star-stuffed cast with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg and more in top form. 'The Departed' centers on the war between the South Boston police and an Irish-American crime syndicate. To get the upper hand, rookie cop Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) goes undercover to get closer to gang leader Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). At the same time, a young criminal (Matt Damon) has infiltrated the police unit and is informing for Costello. To protect their true allegiance, these two men must race against time to discover the other's identity and expose their opposite before they can be unmasked themselves. Watch "The Departed" on Netflix now Released in 1999, 'American Pie' is the definitive teen comedy for a whole generation of people. Some of its attitudes to sex (and frankly, women) are undoubtedly outdated, but there is still plenty of cringeworthy comedy that is worryingly relatable for a whole lot of us. It made household names of its cast of young upcomers, and spawned a franchise that ran through the 2000s and into the 2010s. But the original has always been the best slice of this pie. The coming-of-age story focuses on Jim (Jason Biggs), who makes a pact with his closest friends to all lose their virginity before their impending graduation. Naturally, this leads to many awkward moments and even a few life lessons. Also starring Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne, Chris Klein and Sean William Scott (in his most iconic role), 'American Pie' remains a (mostly) delicious treat. Netflix also added the first sequel, and it's almost as much fun. Watch "American Pie" on Netflix now This month, Netflix is adding the first six 'Fast and Furious' movies (and spin-off 'Hobbs and Shaw'), while 2011's 'Fast Five' tends to get the most plaudits, and I have praised it many times in the past myself, this time I'm highlighting 'Furious 7.' Arguably, the series' blockbuster peak, by this point, the franchise's street race origins are gone, and Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew are basically superheroes performing death-defying stunts with ease. In this seventh installment, Dom's team is recruited to prevent a global terrorist from obtaining a McGuffin of extreme power, but the plot trappings are unimportant. Viewers are here for the outrageous set pieces, and in this area, 'Furious 7' is unrivalled. The movie is also known for being Paul Walker's final appearance in the series before his tragic death, and this aspect is handled with remarkable grace that might just bring a tear to your eye. Watch "Furious 7" on Netflix from August 16 'Groundhog Day' is often ranked as among Billy Murray's very best comedies, and that's quite some achievement considering his filmography is bursting with very funny films. Directed by his 'Ghostbusters' co-star Harold Ramis, 'Groundhog Day' is seriously funny, but beyond the many laughs, it's also got a sweet romantic plot and a worthwhile message about seizing the day. Murray plays Phil Connors, a jaded TV weatherman, who travels to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, for the town's annual Groundhog Day celebration. But once there, he finds himself trapped in a time loop, forced to relive the same day over and over. As he repeats the same day dozens of times, he eventually starts to fall for his producer, Rita (Andie MacDowell), and becomes increasingly desperate to break free from his purgatory. The New England Poetry Club's new summer series is reframing Americana

This Sunday, Aug. 3, lovers of verse will return to Longfellow House for the third installment of the series with a reading from Richard Blanco, the fifth inaugural poet, who was selected by President Obama in 2013, and a performance by Venezuelan trombonist Angel Subero. Ratiner said he had the idea for the series six months ago; it was a response to being 'worried about the health and vitality of our democracy.' 'I wanted a program that would reaffirm the range of voices, backgrounds, histories that come into play in American society and American culture,' Ratiner said. The series began July 6 with Robert Pinsky, a three-time poet laureate and Boston University professor emeritus, accompanied by Berklee associate professor and multi-instrumentalist Stan Strickland. It was followed by July 20 readings by poets Stephanie Burt and Diannely Antigua. Burt is a Harvard professor and Antigua is the 13th poet laureate of Portsmouth, N.H., and the University of New Hampshire's inaugural Nossrat Yassini Poet in Residence. The musical guest was Todd Brunel, a critically acclaimed clarinetist and saxophone player. Advertisement Before Pinsky took the stage, Ratiner introduced the event as a 'celebration of the big encompassing 'We.'' He noted that the Constitution preamble's use of 'We' did not necessarily consider diverse voices. Still, he believed there was an aspiration from the Founding Fathers for a more inclusive 'We' that has slowly developed in America. 'I believe that 'we' has to be the guiding spirit in this country, if we are to continue prospering,' Ratiner said in an interview with the Globe. ''We' makes a place for everyone, all our backgrounds, all our histories, and I believe poetry is very often the spearhead to doing that.' Ratiner said each featured poet had agreed with this sentiment, which showcased to him 'the same sort of urgency to affirm what is really important in American culture.' Blanco said the series' name struck him because it underscores that 'we' means everybody, a through line also seen in his work as a poet. Through Blanco's poetry, he states claim on his 'Americanness as a gay Latino immigrant not only personally but for anyone who has felt marginalized and not fully included in the narrative of this country.' In each reading, the poets relay what 'We' means to them. Pinsky read his work as well as poetry by Allen Ginsberg before inviting Strickland up for an impromptu collaborative freestyle. Several dozen people sat in black folding chairs or on the grass while a second crowd watched the reading's livestream. Each reading will be available for streaming and playback via the Advertisement During the second event, Burt discussed Walter Mondale, Vermont, and Cambridge while reading from her 2022 collection, 'We Are Mermaids,' and forthcoming collection 'Read the Room' — while Antigua explored topics such as mental health and the American dream in her books 'Ugly Music' and 'Good Monster.' Antigua then invited Somerville's poet laureate Lloyd Schwartz to read a poem named 'The Gardner's Song.' This summer's final event will feature award-winning poet and founder of UMass Boston's creative writing MFA program Martha Collins on Aug. 10. The 2026 readers and performers will be announced at a later date. For Blanco's Sunday reading, he said he hopes listeners leave with a sense of faith and cautious optimism for the future. Blanco said he thinks poetry helps us better understand issues that are 'abstracted and distorted by news channels and social media.' 'Poetry gives these issues real stories — real faces, real names. In doing so, poetry grounds those issues in a way that helps us better understand them and deal with them,' Blanco said in an email statement. 'But, besides that, in times like these, it's even more important to gather in community so that we don't feel as alone, frustrated, fearful, but rather more empowered, uplifted, rejuvenated.'
