Inquest called into inmate's death, months after guard acquitted
The inquest will try to determine the circumstances regarding the death of Headingley Correctional Centre inmate William Ahmo in 2021.

Ahmo, 45, died in hospital on Feb. 14, 2021. Seven days earlier, the Sagkeeng First Nation man was shackled, pinned to the ground, placed in a spit hood and strapped into a restraint chair in the common area of his unit after a three-hour standoff with guards at the Headingley Correctional Centre.
The chief medical examiner deemed Ahmo's death a homicide. He died from a brain injury caused by a heart attack as he struggled to breathe, court heard at the trial of Robert Jeffrey Morden.
Morden, who led the tactical team that responded to the standoff, pleaded not guilty to criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities of life. He was acquitted last September.
A lawsuit filed on behalf of Ahmo's mother in February 2023 alleges the provincial government and jail guards were negligent and breached their duty of care for the inmate, among other claims of mistreatment and racism. The government has yet to respond in civil court.

Sex offender released from prison, expected to live in Winnipeg
The Winnipeg Police Service is informing the public that a convicted sex offender, who is considered high-risk to reoffend against pre-pubescent and adolescent boys, is out of prison. Glen Gregory Tyler Pozniak, 43, was released from Stony Mountain Institution on Thursday after serving a portion of his sentence for convictions of sexual exploitation; three counts of sexual interference; possession of child pornography; and making, printing, publishing, or possessing for the purpose of publication any child pornography. He is expected to live in Winnipeg. According to police, Pozniak committed these offences against several victims while in a 'position of trust and authority which occurred over several years and consisted of ongoing sexually violent abuse.' Police said Pozniak has a lengthy criminal record that also includes convictions of robbery, uttering threats, assault causing bodily harm, and assault of a peace officer. Upon his release from prison, Pozniak will be subject to several conditions, including not consuming, purchasing or possessing alcohol or drugs; not being in, near or around places where children under the age of 16 are likely to congregate; and not being in the presence of any children under the age of 16 unless accompanied by an adult who has been approved by the court. He is also subject to lifetime prohibitions of attending a public park or swimming area where someone under the age of 16 is present or is reasonably expected to be present; seeking any employment that involves being in a position of trust or authority towards anyone under the age of 16; and using the internet or other digital networks. Police are providing this information so the public can take appropriate measures to protect themselves. Any form of vigilante or unreasonable conduct won't be tolerated. Anyone with information on Pozniak is asked to call the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit at 431-489-8056. They can also call Winnipeg police, their local RCMP detachment, or Crime Stoppers.

Convicted sex offender considered high risk to reoffend expected to live in Winnipeg: police
A convicted sex offender with a lengthy criminal record, including convictions for sexual exploitation, publication of child pornography and assault causing bodily harm, is expected to live in Winnipeg after his release, and police are warning he is considered a risk to reoffend. Glen Gregory Tyler Pozniak, 43, was released Thursday on statutory release from Stony Mountain Institution, a federal facility north of Winnipeg, after serving a portion of his sentence there. He was sentenced in September 2015 to 13 years in prison, Winnipeg police said in a community notification released Thursday. Pozniak was convicted for offences including sexual exploitation, sexual interference, and possession and publication of child pornography. Police said he committed ongoing sexually violent abuse against several minors over a number of years while holding a position of trust and authority. That included making images and videos showing child sexual abuse and sexual exploitation, and providing alcohol and illegal drugs to the minors, police said. His offences involved other perpetrators online. Police found extreme and violent child sexual abuse and sexual exploitation material on Pozniak's phone, some of which included unknown victims, and some of which included victims known to him. Pozniak completed some sex offender programming while in custody, but didn't complete the entirety of what was offered, police said in Thursday's notification. He remains a high risk to sexually reoffend, according to police, and pre-pubescent and adolescent boys are at risk. Pozniak is under a lifetime prohibition from attending any place where children under the age of 16 are likely to be, including parks, swimming areas, daycares, school grounds or community centres. He is also not allowed to work or volunteer at a job where he would have a position of power or authority over a person under the age of 16. Pozniak is also forbidden from having digital devices that can access the internet, unless he is at a job site and accesses the internet for work-related reasons. Police said they provided Thursday's community notification to ensure the public can take suitable measures to protect themselves, but warned any form of vigilante activity directed toward Pozniak will not be tolerated. He is described as five feet, seven inches tall and weighs 209 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes, and has tattoos of Roman numerals on his left forearm.
