Stuart Broad criticises ‘lazy decision' to halt Oval Test with England-India series on a knife edge

Stuart Broad criticised the decision to call off day four's play at The Oval with the fifth Test match between England and India on a knife edge. Ground staff and umpires came together in the middle to discuss conditions after play had been suspended for bad light and heavy rain. And despite the rain easing and brightening skies, play was called off at 6pm, to loud boos from the crowd. The players will return on Monday to finish off the contest, with England needing 35 runs and India needing four wickets. England currently lead the series 2-1. 'Still 20 mins away from possible start time,' Broad tweeted at 6.25pm. 'Everyone has their sunglasses on at the train station. Felt the supporters deserved to see a finish to that Test Match today. Felt a lazy decision to call it off at 6pm in my opinion. I wonder who makes it?' However neither side grumbled about the decision, after another hard day's play. Joe Root, who hit a century to drag England back into the match, told the BBC: 'It is quite a fitting end for how the rest of the series has gone. It has ebbed and flowed all of the way through and this test is exactly the same. 'We are in for a cracker, we are in a good position. We have another heavy roller available. Things might happen quicker with the new ball, it might be easier to score.' A night's break and an extra use of the heavy roller could play into England's hands but a saturated outfield meant the tourists were not complaining. 'We can see it's pretty wet out there,' said Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel. 'In a way that's out of our control so all we can focus on is doing a good warm-up in the morning, get the boys ready to get the ball in the right area and create a little bit of excitement again.' Chris Woakes, who has not featured since badly damaging his left shoulder while fielding on Friday, has remained with the team and is willing to bat at No 11 with his arm in a sling if required. 'You probably saw him in his whites in the dressing room. He's all in, like the rest of us,' said Root. 'Clearly, he's in a huge amount of pain. But it means a huge amount to him and it just shows the character and the person that he is, that he's willing to put his body on the line like that for England. 'If it does come to that, hopefully he can get us across the line and win an incredible series.' additional reporting by PA

VIDEO: Man Utd's Bruno Fernandes labelled 'one of the most unlikeable players on earth' for brutal foul on Everton's Iliman Ndiaye that sparked ugly clash in pre-season friendly

Fernandes sparks scuffle after reckless foul Both players booked after heated exchange United crowned Premier League Summer Series champions Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Fernandes lunged in from behind on Ndiaye near the halfway line in the lead-up to Everton's equaliser, sparking a heated exchange between the two. Ndiaye immediately confronted the Portuguese midfielder, and team-mates rushed in to separate the pair as tempers flared. Both players were shown yellow cards as tensions boiled over on the pitch. Fans reacted critically on social media towards the Red Devils captain's cynical kickout. WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING @_luke1878_ wrote on X: "Bruno Fernandes has to be one of the most unlikeable players on earth." @The92Bible added: "Bruno Fernandes intentionally trying to injure Iliman Ndiaye in a pre-season friendly is exactly why he isn't rated as much as he should be. Great player but terrible sportsman." Man City fan @TheCityRamble added: "Bruno Fernandes just casually booting out at an opponent during a pre-season friendly." Everton fan @ClarkeJoel22 wrote: "Bruno Fernandes is one of the biggest kn*bheads in football." @Lea_EFC concluded: "BRUNO FERNANDES YOU F*CKING SH*THOUSE." THE BIGGER PICTURE The incident proved costly for United, who conceded a bizarre own goal moments after the scuffle. It overshadowed a solid display from Fernandes, who had scored earlier in the match to give the Red Devils the lead. United still managed to claim the Premier League Summer Series title following previous wins over Bournemouth and West Ham. WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD? Ruben Amorim's Red Devils return to action this weekend against Fiorentina at Old Trafford. They will then kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Arsenal the following Sunday. Fernandes' actions may draw further scrutiny in the build-up to those fixtures.

Insider confirms SECOND Alexander Isak offer is close

Liverpool's pursuit of Alexander Isak hit a crucial juncture on Friday. The Reds' sporting director - Richard Hughes - sent a first formal offer across the desk of Eddie Howe - the Newcastle manager. It's been reported by various sources that the opening bid fell WELL short of Newcastle's valuation of their striking sensation. 🔴 Shop the LFC Store 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! With the Geordies putting a £150m price tag on Isak's head, Liverpool's bid is reported to have come out at somewhere between £110m and £120m. That was insufficient to turn Newcastle's heads - but in many ways this transfer already seems inevitable. The 25-year-old wants the move and has been training alone at Real Sociedad's facilities while he waits on the outcome of talks between the two Premier League sides. Isak is ANGRY at Newcastle Newcastle insider Keith Downie has provided an update on his YouTube channel - outlining a grim mood around St. James' Park as a result of Liverpool's efforts to sign the Swede. 'We know Alexander Isak is agitating to leave,' he said. 'We know he's unsettled. We know his head has been turned. "We know the reason he's training out in the Basque region by himself is not because of injury—it's because he's annoyed, frustrated, upset that he feels Newcastle have reneged on a promise to give him more money or to allow him to leave. And the situation is becoming very, very ugly at the moment.' Although it's been suggested that Liverpool will NOT be back for Isak unless something dramatic happens, Downie believes it's only a matter of time before the Reds strike again. The odds are in Liverpool's favour The reporter also states that the odds remain in Liverpool's favour - with Isak and the Reds both aligned on their desired outcome. One complicating factor is Newcastle's as yet failed pursuit of a new striker of their own. Benjamin Sesko is the favourite to arrive but they will have to hold off Manchester United's interest to get a deal over the line. 'I still think it's probably 60/40—60 that he goes, 40 that he stays,' Downie admits. 'I still think there's a chance he stays, and it's purely for the fact that Newcastle can't get a decent top-level replacement lined up. They haven't yet.' And so two conditions must be met before Isak comes on board as Liverpool's new centre-forward. Insider EXPECTS Liverpool offer soon For one - Hughes has got to get much closer to the £150m that Newcastle desire for the Sweden international. A deal COULD be possible at £135m give or take. And the Anfield club better hope that the Magpies are able to attract a high-quality replacement before the season kicks off. 'I'm fully expecting Liverpool to come back in with a second offer,' Downie says. 'I'm told they're preparing a second offer. But Newcastle, for two reasons—unless it meets the valuation or comes close to it, and unless they've got a replacement lined up—they're not going to do business. 'They need some resolution on this quickly. Whether that's next week or the next ten days, I think we'll know one way or another come the opening day of the season—two weeks tomorrow—what the outcome is.' © IMAGO
