Lockheed Martin Expands Mars Ambitions With Next-Gen Mission Design

Its space business segment, which plays a key role in areas such as satellite technology, missile warning systems and deep space exploration, has already been involved deeply in Earth-to-Mars missions of NASA.
Impressively, Lockheed Martin built NASA's first Mars lander and has been a part of every NASA Mars mission since.
Now, Lockheed Martin is aiming even higher with a new streamlined approach to NASA's Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission, which could set a new standard for future planetary missions. This revolutionary mission aims to collect soil samples from Mars and bring them back to Earth in a single mission.
LMT's updated plan for the MSR mission introduces a faster and more affordable approach by using a smaller Mars lander with a smaller Mars Ascent Vehicle and a smaller Earth Return Orbiter.
To this end, in a recent development, Lockheed Martin has proposed a commercially-led approach to NASA for executing the MRS mission at a firm-fixed price of under $3 billion. This is a bold alternative to the agency's current MSR cost projections, which are nearing $7 billion.
As global interest in space continues to rise, such initiatives should bolster the long-term prospects of Lockheed Martin's space business.

With this new knowledge, I knew I couldn't treat my legs, arms, or armpits after summer days by the pool, so for the sake of this experiment, I decided to treat my facial hair. I felt comfortable trying this area as I wear SPF daily, and take extra precautions if I'm in direct sun wearing a hat or sitting, so I knew I would be able to keep that area safe while I was still actively treating it. My First Few Sessions Bianca Guzzo As per the instruction manual, I was to do three to four treatments per week for the first three weeks of using the laser, adding a single treatment a week after that for the next month or so. I used the included razor to shave the areas I wanted to treat, plugged the machine in, popped the sunglasses on, and got to zapping. As I said, I was playing it safe, so I started with the lowest setting. As soon as you're holding the laser flush to your skin, and indicator light goes off, signalling that it's safe to use. With a few zaps, my first session was over with no pain at all, which did confuse me a little, but I definitely felt the cooling effect. After about a week of using it on the lowest setting and not seeing any results, I turned it up to the middle setting and still didn't feel much. Eventually, I made it to the strongest setting, which felt like a very light shock and only lasted a fraction of a second. Doing the treatment wasn't uncomfortable at all, and I loved that I didn't have to make any expensive appointments. After I had worked my way up to this strongest setting, I continued to use it for every single treatment. Where We Are Five Weeks In I've stuck to the schedule, except for missing a single treatment during a weekend away, and I can definitely see the results. Point blank, it's not as strong as a hair removal laser in a spa, so the results won't be as noticeable or fast. However, I did see the hair in areas, like my upper lip, visibly decrease within weeks, and hasn't really grown back aside from a couple of strands I've been able to pluck on the fly. Bianca Guzzo In areas where my hair is a little coarser and thicker, like my sideburns and chin, the hair growth has slowed down but still grows back—albeit a little thinner—so I think these areas will need a bit more time to give me the desired results. Plus, I can use it anywhere on my body, excluding private areas and around my eyes, so if you're planning on treating most of your body like me, it's well worth its price. Japan's Resilience lander fails to stick moon landing again
TOKYO, Japan: Japan's hopes for a foothold in commercial lunar exploration suffered a second blow this week after Tokyo-based startup ispace confirmed its Resilience lander likely crashed on the moon. The attempted touchdown was meant to mark a milestone for Japan's private space ambitions but ended with lost contact and no confirmation of a soft landing. The uncrewed lander, carrying scientific payloads worth US$16 million, appears to have suffered issues measuring its distance to the lunar surface and failed to slow down in time, ispace said. Contact was lost just under two minutes before the scheduled touchdown. This was ispace's second failed attempt after its inaugural mission crashed in 2023 due to inaccurate altitude recognition. While the hardware design remained mostly unchanged, software updates had been made. Still, Resilience couldn't avoid a hard landing. "Truly diverse scenarios were possible, including issues with the propulsion system, software or hardware, especially with sensors," said Chief Technology Officer Ryo Ujiie. More than 500 people — including ispace staff, sponsors, and government officials — had gathered at a Tokyo venue to witness the historic moment. Instead, a tense silence descended when the signal was lost. Shares of ispace plunged, hitting sell-order limits and looking set to close down 29%. Still, CFO Jumpei Nozaki said the company faced "no immediate financial deterioration," citing continued investor backing. Resilience had targeted Mare Frigoris, a plain near the moon's north pole, where it planned to conduct 14 days of exploration — including NASA-contracted work capturing regolith. The mission carried a rover built by ispace's Luxembourg subsidiary, alongside external instruments from Japanese companies and a Taiwanese university. While a commercial success would have aligned Japan with U.S. companies like Intuitive Machines and Firefly Aerospace, both of whom achieved moon landings this year, ispace now faces a multi-year pause. Japan's national space agency, JAXA, did land its SLIM lander in 2023, making Japan the fifth country to manage a soft lunar landing. Despite the setback, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said, "Expectations for ispace have not faded." The company plans to continue its efforts, with a third mission slated for 2027 through its U.S. unit under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services. Ispace aims to complete six more missions across Japan and the U.S. by 2029.
