Concert review: Cantopop icon ‘Principal' Tam got young and old on their feet

You have to give it to Hong Kong singer-actor Alan Tam, who proves that age is just a number.
The showbiz veteran, who turns 75 in August, delivered a three-hour concert on June 14 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
He enthralled an 8,000-strong capacity crowd with close to 40 songs, keeping the energy level high throughout with nary a break. It is the kind of stamina that even younger pop stars would be envious of.
The Alan Tam Classic Live tour started in Shanghai in May 2023. It has since travelled to other Chinese cities including Guangzhou, Wuhan and Chengdu, as well as Sydney in Australia.
The Singapore leg had been highly anticipated, as it marked Tam's first solo show here since his 40th Anniversary Concert Tour in 2016.
He last performed in town in December 2023 with The Wynners, as part of their 50th anniversary farewell tour at Sands Grand Ballroom. The Hong Kong pop band also comprise lead vocalist Kenny Bee, 72; guitarist Bennett Pang, 76; drummer Anthony Chan, 72; and bassist Danny Yip, 74.
Tam, who began his music career in 1973 with the band, released his debut solo album, Naughty Boy, in 1979. He achieved superstardom in the 1980s and 1990s, consistently putting out platinum records.
Over five decades, he has been credited with recording more than 100 albums and composing over 800 songs.
The audience at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, expecting a nostalgia fest, were not let down.
Kicking off the proceedings at 8.05pm, the Cantopop icon immediately launched into several of his timeless ballads, including Autumn Romance (1984) and Love Of My Life (1996).

The audience was an even mix of Baby Boomers and Generation X, from those in their 50s to their 70s, with a sprinkling of millennials, and Tam expressed his appreciation for them all.
In recent years, his career has enjoyed a second wind after he appeared in several variety shows in China, which introduced him to younger fans.
'Even after 50 years in the industry, I'm still learning every day, including from the young artistes I meet,' he said. 'Their energy invigorates me and reminds me why I love music.'

Affectionately known as Principal Tam, a nod to his stature in the Hong Kong entertainment industry, the enduring superstar is famous for playfully insisting he is 'forever 25'.
He clearly keeps himself in good shape, evident when he revealed toned, buff arms in a short-sleeved shirt.
And he pointed out that he was not the oldest performer at the concert. His Philippines-born, Hong Kong-based drummer Nicanor D Ledesma is 76.
Other than his timeless hit ballads, Tam also performed fast numbers with his backup dancers.

Tam performed fast numbers such as Love Trap (1985) and Karaoke Forever (1990), matching the pace of his eight dancers without any signs of breathlessness. He was also accompanied by three backup vocalists.
'I definitely gave you my all tonight,' he said teasingly past 10.30pm.
He then asked: 'What time is it now? Do you need to leave? Would you have transport back to Johor Bahru?', showing concern for the Malaysians who had crossed the Causeway to support him.

Despite the late hour, the audience remained, singing along with gusto, prompting Tam to praise their dedication.
As he launched into his encore, which featured his iconic 1985 track Friends, many in the crowd were on their feet and waving lightsticks.
'No matter how old you are in the future, whenever you hear my song, I hope you will remember this evening and this feeling of warmth and energy we shared,' he said.
For his parting shot, he advised: 'Always be true to yourself and live in the moment.'

[SINGAPORE] New members-only club, Vanta, will open in MacDonald House in December, after a S$30 million renovation. The club, which will span 16,000 square feet across two levels in the national monument, is initially targeting 1,000 members, with plans to gradually expand to 2,000. Chinese actor Zhang Yiyang was recently revealed to have been executed by a firing squad in December last year for killing his 16-year-old girlfriend. He was 34 years old and is the first celebrity in China to have been handed a death sentence. According to a court document released by Xianyang, Shaanxi, his girlfriend surnamed Zhang - who was 15 years old when they first dated - had wanted to break up. Yiyang was opposed to it and threatened to kill himself during their quarrels. On Feb 26, 2022, he lured her into a forest in the guise of celebrating her birthday and cut her neck multiple times with a pocketknife, rupturing her carotid artery and windpipe. He then went home to change his clothes, before throwing them and her mobile phone into a river. The court document revealed he then tried to commit suicide in a hotel but was found by staff who called the police. The court sentenced him to death for intentional homicide, and he was executed on Dec 18, 2024. Yiyang's posthumous film Jie You Yin Sheng Guan premiered in March this year, and netizens recently took to Douban to give one-star ratings, criticising its release despite its lead actor being executed for murder. One netizen remarked: "The male lead actor was executed for murder, but the movie he starred in still premiered." ‘Special connection' sees Alexandri sisters clinch duet technical title at World Aquatics C'ships

SINGAPORE – Like most siblings, Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri run into arguments, but they have found an unorthodox way to resolve them. Whenever the Austrian artistic swimmers, who are part of a triplet with their sister Vasiliki, have any disagreements, all it takes is a shared glance and a laugh to move past it. It is this unique bond that has helped them clinch their second world title on July 21, as they won the women's duet technical gold at the World Aquatics Championships (WCH). At the WCH Arena, the pair scored 307.1451 points, finishing ahead of Chinese twins Lin Yanhan and Lin Yanjun (301.4057) and Russians Mayya Doroshko and Tatiana Gayday (300.2183), who are competing as neutrals. With sisters taking up the top two spots on the podium, the 27-year-old Alexandris were asked if there is anything about being triplets or twins that helps with their pool performances. But they took little notice of their competitors' scores; all that mattered to Anna-Maria was that it would be their turn at 7.25pm. They delivered a flawless routine to Japanese composer Koji Sakurai's version of the classical piece Swan Lake, securing their second world title, adding to the duet free gold they had won at the 2023 Fukuoka world championships. Anna-Maria said: 'We are very happy to be back. I had a shoulder dislocation in the summer of 2023 and I had pain and it hadn't fully recovered for Doha, so we had to withdraw from the world championships because our big goal was the Paris Olympics. 'Now we are very happy because this was the highlight of the year and we finished with a gold medal.' It has not been easy for the siblings since the Paris Olympics, where they were fourth in the duet. At the end of 2024, their long-time coach Albena Mladenova, who had guided them for 12 years, retired. For some time, they trained on their own, until they began working with Japanese coach Takako Nakajima four months ago – a partnership that has already yielded impressive results. Before their win in Singapore, they bagged the duet technical title at the European Championships in June, while Vasiliki returned after an 11-month break to take bronze in the solo technical at the World Cup in Canada. The six-time world championship gold medallist explained: 'It was completely new because it's a new routine, it's another (set of) rules from the technical routine. 'I was excited to compete today and I'm very satisfied that I could show my best swim in this routine because I've been doing this routine for one month. 'We created this routine one month ago for the world championships... it was very difficult during the training sessions because I did four routines – mixed duets and two solos – and this routine is one of the most difficult of our routines.'
