PM inaugurates HMIS system SMC-run hospitals to integrate into centralised digital health database
The Hospital Management and Information System (HMIS) for SMC was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Gandhinagar on Tuesday.
The HMIS will provide the health institutions of the SMC with a centralised system integrated with a database so that patient treatment becomes seamless and data duplication is prevented.
Meanwhile, SMC has taken a step forward in going digital by interconnecting all 80 urban health centres and hospitals.
The treatment details of patients will be stored in digital format through the HMIS project, said sources.
SMC sources said under the HMIS, digital OPD/IPD registrations can be done and electronic health records will be maintained.
Under the HMIS, a Picture Archival and Communication System (PACS) will digitally store and archive various types of radiological images from sonography, X-ray etc.
Under the HMIS, a Queue Management System (QMS) in SMIMER hospital will also help the patients by providing digital tokens.
The e-Health Mobile App under the HMIS will help the patient to save and check their medical history and treatment expenses.
Sources said, as the information of the patient will be available in the system, the doctors will be able to make quick and appropriate decisions.
The SMC, will also give an e-health card and Unique Health ID (UHID) to every patient to track information related to health services.
Surat Municipal Corporation Health Officer Pradeep Umrigar told The Indian Express, 'We have implemented HMIS in all 80 urban health centres, six hospitals (zone-wise), SMIMER and Maskati hospital. The HMIS is a paperless project. Patients should first get their UHID, after which they can avail all the facilities. Doctors, pharmacists, and laboratories can also access the details using the patient's UHID number. As of now, UHID cards have been given to 4000 patients from urban health centres, 2400 from SMIMER and 400 from Maskati hospital.'

India-Trinidad Tobago sign six MoUs to boost cooperation
Port of Spain [Trinidad and Tobago] July 5 (ANI): India and Trinidad and Tobago have signed six agreements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Caribbean nation to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key areas, including infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, development projects, sports, education, cultural exchange programs and diplomatic training. The six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed following delegation-level talks between PM Modi and his Trinidad and Tobago counterpart Kamla Persad-Bissessar in Port of Spain on Friday. The MoUs include an agreement on the Indian Pharmacopoeia, which aims to provide improved access to Indian pharmaceutical products in the Trinidad and Tobago market, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated in a statement. To strengthen the development corporation partnership between the two countries, an agreement was signed for an Indian grant to implement Quick Impact Projects (QIP). Agreements were also signed to strengthen cooperation in sports, diplomatic training and the re-establishment of two ICCR Chairs of Hindi and Indian Studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Trinidad and Tobago. An MoU on the Programme of Cultural Exchanges for the period 2025-2028 was also signed. Along with the MoUs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced the extension of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards facility up to 6th generation of Indian Diaspora members in Trinidad and Tobago, allowing them to live and work in India without restrictions. Earlier, this facility was available up to the 4th generation of Indian Diaspora members in the Caribbean nation. PM Modi also gifted 2000 laptops to school students in Trinidad and Tobago and announced formal handing over of agro-processing machinery (USD 1 million) to the National Agricultural Marketing and Development Corporation (NAMDEVCO) and the holding of Artificial Limb Fitment Camp (poster-launch) in Trinidad and Tobago for 50 days for 800 people. The Indian Prime Minister further announced that under the 'Heal in India' program, specialised medical treatment will be offered to Trinidad and Tobago citizens. He also gifted twenty Hemodialysis Units and two Sea ambulances to the Caribbean nation to assist in the provision of healthcare. PM Modi announced the solarisation of the headquarters of T&T's Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs by providing rooftop photovoltaic solar panels. Enhancing the cultural ties between both nations, PM Modi announced the celebration of Geeta Mahotsav at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Cooperation in Port of Spain, coinciding with the Geeta Mahotsav celebrations in India. Kerala: High alert in 3 districts after suspected Nipah virus cases
The Kerala government on Friday issued a high alert in three districts after two suspected cases of the Nipah virus were detected in the state, The Hindu reported. One of the cases was later confirmed. The alerts were issued for Malappuram, Palakkad and Kozhikode districts. The two cases included an 18-year-old woman from Malappuram, who died on Tuesday in Kozhikode from acute encephalitis syndrome, and a 38-year-old woman from Palakkad currently being treated in Malappuram, the newspaper reported. The two women had shown symptoms consistent with the virus during routine testing. Subsequently, preliminary tests conducted at the government medical colleges in Kozhikode and Malappuram indicated the possibility of the virus, Manorama News reported. The samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune in accordance with the standard protocol for confirmation. On Friday, the institute confirmed the infection in the 38-year-old woman, while the test result of the 18-year-old was awaited, The Hindu reported. After the cases came to light, state Health Minister Veena George convened an emergency meeting and confirmed that preventive actions had been intensified in the state in line with the Nipah virus protocol, Hindustan Times reported. George added that police assistance had been sought to help trace persons who may have been in contact with the suspected cases. State and district-level helplines were being set up to provide assistance, she said. Twenty-six rapid response teams had been deployed to carry out contact tracing, monitor symptoms and spread public awareness. Officials were also directed to investigate unnatural or unexplained deaths reported in the past few weeks, the minister said, adding that this was 'one of the key warning signs of a potential outbreak'. The Nipah virus is a ' zoonotic illness ' transferred from animals such as pigs and fruit bats to humans. The virus can also be caught through human-to-human transmission. It causes fever and cold-like symptoms in patients. The infection can also cause encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain, and myocarditis, or the inflammation of the heart, in some cases. In May, a 42-year-old woman in Malappuram had tested positive for Nipah, The Indian Express reported. The woman, who was admitted with symptoms of encephalitis, recovered from the infection. Since 2018, Kerala has experienced five Nipah outbreaks. According to The Indian Express, only seven patients who tested positive have survived till date: one in Kozhikode in 2018, another in Kochi in 2019, four in Kozhikode in 2023 and the 42-year-old woman in May. In 2018, 17 out of 18 infected persons had succumbed to the disease, while one death was reported in 2021. In 2023, two deaths due to the Nipah virus were recorded. Last year, the state reported two deaths.

Centre to set up naturopathy hospital in Guntur
GUNTUR: In a major boost to traditional medicine and healthcare in AP, the Union government has approved the establishment of a Central Research Institute of Yoga and Naturopathy (CRIYN) in Nadimpalem village of Prathipadu mandal, Guntur district. The project, including a 100-bed hospital and staff quarters, will be developed at a cost of Rs 94 crore with 100% central funding under the Ministry of AYUSH. Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar announced the project on Thursday. Spread across 15 acres, the institute will house advanced healthcare facilities, a research centre, academic training units, and residential quarters. The hospital will provide integrated round-the-clock care based on yoga and naturopathy, offering preventive and curative treatment. He thanked PM Narendra Modi and Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav for sanctioning the project and credited CM N Chandrababu Naidu's leadership in advancing the State's health infrastructure.
