UK weather: Yellow warning for thunderstorms issued ahead of a possible third heatwave

Yahoo2 days ago
Thunderstorms are set to hit a large part of eastern England on Sunday, bringing heavy rain, lightning and hail before a potential third heatwave later in the week, forecasters have said.
Between 15 and 25mm (0.6-1 inch) of rain is forecast to fall widely in an area stretching almost to Hull in the north and Princes Risborough to the west, and across eastern England, including all of East Anglia and as far south as the East Sussex and Kent coasts.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms from 7am to 7pm, saying much of the rain could fall within two or three hours at any given place.
The rainfall will spread east over the region and where there are repeated thunderstorms, as much as 40-60mm (1.6-2.4 inches) could fall, the warning adds.

A yellow warning means there is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus, while some trains may be delayed.
Buildings and structures could be damaged by lightning strikes, while flooding may affect homes and businesses and power cuts are possible.
Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said a weather front moving across Wales and England first thing "could start to provide some quite intense downpours of rain, particularly heavy around the Humber and Wash regions".
"That will generally move south-eastwards and break into showers as we head throughout the day - some of those could turn thundery with hail and quite intense downpours of rain," he said.
From Tuesday, high pressure coming in from the Azores starts to build widely across the UK, which from midweek onwards should lead to "fewer showers, more sunny spells and also climbing temperatures", he added.

Temperatures could even reach the low 30Cs by the end of the week, meaning the UK could see a third heatwave this summer, ITV News reported, quoting Marco Petagna, a senior meteorologist at the Met Office.
Mr Petagna said it "looks like we will meet heatwave criteria again by the end of the week", but added it is hard to predict how long the hot weather will last.

GPS steers family into roads flooded by Haw River, man rescues them

HAW RIVER, N.C. (WGHP) — The Haw River rose quickly Sunday night in the wake of Tropical Storm Chantal, and it took many people by surprise. As major roads like the interstate had water flowing over them, navigation systems started suggesting people take alternate routes, but those routes weren't safe either. A family from South Africa traveling to Virginia followed an alternate route down Stone Street Extension, which is a dark, rural two-lane road right over the Haw River. If it weren't for the help of a man who saw them at the right time, they would have been washed into the river. 'We had to make a detour… I never come this way. You don't want to use the words 'divine intervention', but why not?' said Mebane native Bryan Roney. Roney, taking an alternate route himself, knew it wasn't safe to go over the bridge. 'I was attempting to turn around and saw two cars coming this way,' Roney said. He knew the cars were stalled and knew he had to act fast. He got to a man with a little girl first. The man was in shock, gripping his steering wheel. 'I said, 'You got to listen to me. You're fixing to die,'' said Roney. He got them out of the car, and the family of four in the other car. 'The only thing I had was my log chain, so we all grabbed onto this log chain,' he said. And the Haw River nipped at their knees. 'Hold onto this rail, so we held on. We had the chain in one hand, rail in the other,' he said. As the water was rising on the bridge, neighbors in a mobile home park on the riverbank were terrified. 'I looked out, and my entire front steps was floating away,' Kenneth Saum said. Nearby, one trailer was half underwater. Saum checked on his neighbors closest to the river and got devastating news. 'They ended up losing a dog that was still outside,' he said. As daylight broke, waterlines, tree leaves coated in river mud and the washed-out cars were visible. The cars were hauled out Monday afternoon and were total losses. They have their lives and some new clothes. 'I said, 'Let's go to my house.' I called my wife to get some towels ready, and I had a lot of extra shirts, so now that family is all dressed in triathlon shirts, and a family member came from South Boston [Virginia] to pick them up,' Roney said. Roney said the entire ordeal is a good reminder not to depend on GPS in a storm and to back up if you see water over the road, and he's very grateful he was able to help. Monsoon floods sweep away 18 people and the main bridge linking Nepal to China

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A mountain river flooded by monsoon rains swept away the main bridge connecting Nepal with China and 18 people were also swept away by the flooding, Nepali authorities said Tuesday. Rescue efforts were underway Tuesday as officials assess the damage and search for the missing people. An army helicopter was able to lift people stranded by the flooding. Police said 95 rescuers were already at the area and more are expected to join in rescue efforts. The flooding on the Bhotekoshi River destroyed the Friendship Bridge at Rasuwagadi, which is 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital, Kathmandu, in the early hours of Monday. The flooding also swept away several houses and trucks that were parked at the border for customs inspections. Hundreds of electric vehicles imported from China were also parked at the border point. The 18 missing are 12 Nepali citizens and six Chinese nationals, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The destruction of the bridge has halted all trade from China to Nepal through this route. The longer alternative is for goods to be shipped from China to India and then brought overland to Nepal. Monsoon rains that begin in June and end in September often cause severe flooding in Nepal, disrupting infrastructure and endangering lives.

Volunteers flock to help search efforts after Texas floods even as officials warn them away

CENTER POINT, Texas — Justin Rubio awoke in the wee hours to an alert on his phone, thunder, sirens and the thud of helicopter blades — the beginning of one of the largest rescue operations in Texas history. Rubio was determined to be a part of it. Even as authorities in Kerr County have repeatedly discouraged civilian volunteers, Rubio and dozens of others went out Monday to search for people still missing after flash flooding tore through the Texas Hill Country over the July Fourth weekend.
