Labour loses first councillor to new Corbyn party
Grace Lewis, a 22-year-old who sits on Coventry city council, resigned from Sir Keir Starmer's party on Friday to join the new rival political movement.
Mr Corbyn and Ms Sultana, who both currently sit as independent MPs, set up their new party last month to fight Sir Keir and Labour at a national scale.
Their party has the placeholder name of Your Party and is positioning itself to the Left of Labour on issues including tax, welfare and the Israel-Palestine conflict. Its founding conference is expected to take place in November.
Cllr Lewis said in a statement: 'Today, after five-and-a-half years, I resigned my Labour Party membership. I will now serve the residents of Westwood on Coventry city council as an independent.
'The Labour Party promised 'change', yet since entering government, Labour has cut support for disabled people, kept the Tories' cruel two-child benefit cap and slashed winter fuel payments, driving record numbers into poverty.
'They have joined Reform in targeting minorities, including migrants and trans people, all whilst being active participants in the genocide in Gaza, ramping up spending on war, and arming Israel – criminalising peaceful protesters in the process.'
She went on to pledge her support to Mr Corbyn and Ms Sultana's party, saying it was 'rooted in working-class communities' and offered 'real change'.
Cllr Lewis continued: 'When Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn announced its inception, I felt a sense of genuine political hope for the first time in a long time.'
Echoing Mr Corbyn's campaign slogan from his time as Labour leader, she added: 'From the picket line and demonstrations to the council chamber, I'll continue to fight for peace, justice, and to put wealth and power into the hands of the many, not the few.
'Together, let's build the alternative. Join us at YourParty.UK.'
Cllr Lewis was elected as a Labour councillor in May 2024, two months before Sir Keir's landslide victory at the general election.
At a council meeting in December, she accused Israel of a 'genocidal assault on Gaza' and urged the West Midlands Pension Fund to withdraw its investments from any companies linked to arms sales to Israel.
On her graduation day at the University of Warwick last summer, Ms Lewis posed with a banner that read 'Free Palestine' and wore a badge of the Palestinian flag.
She wrote on Instagram: 'My degree may be over, but Warwick's complicity is not – free Palestine.'
Responding to Cllr Lewis's defection, Ms Sultana, the MP for Coventry South, said: 'Grace is a formidable force in local government and I'm proud to welcome her to the new political party we're building.
'Across the country, millions feel politically homeless. Labour is dead. To councillors everywhere – are you really delivering the change Keir Starmer promised?'
Labour has sought to dismiss the new rival party, claiming voters have 'twice given their verdict' on Mr Corbyn after he led Labour to defeat at the 2017 and 2019 general elections.
But polling suggests the new party founded by Mr Corbyn and Ms Sultana could take anything between 10 and 18 per cent of the popular vote at an election.
This would strike a further blow to Sir Keir and Labour's hopes of keeping power, and the party is expected to split the Left-wing vote in a similar way to how Reform UK has taken support from the Tories.
In an email to supporters on Friday, Your Party disclosed more information about its founding conference in the coming weeks and confirmed it will be held 'before the end of the year'.
It said: 'This conference will be the moment where, together, we will decide the direction, structure and platform of this party.
'To make it as accessible and democratic as possible, the conference will be hybrid – both in-person and online – so that everyone can take part in the decisions that will shape its future. Make no mistake: whatever the name, it is always going to be your party.'
The email went on to say Mr Corbyn and Ms Sultana would be working with the four independent MPs who were elected alongside Mr Corbyn on a pro-Gaza ticket at last year's general election.
The pro-Palestinian independents, the email said, would be helping to 'kickstart the founding process and make an autumn conference a reality'.
'They will be working with people from campaigns, trade unions and social movements up and down the country, united by the same goal: to launch a democratic party that belongs to you.'

JEREMY Corbyn's party hasn't even launched yet and it is already calling the shots with this government – starting with the recognition of Palestine. Keir Starmer is terrified Jeremy and his band of pro-Gaza MPs will hoover up the Muslim vote and cost Labour the next election. 6 6 So in a jaw-dropping speech on Tuesday, he announced the UK will recognise an independent state of Palestine unless Israel signs up to a ceasefire and long-term peace process. It was an astonishing change in position from Keir, who just days earlier dismissed the stance as gesture politics. So what changed? The grim facts on the ground in the Middle East remained the same. Hamas is still refusing to release the Israeli hostages kidnapped on October 7 and held in cold, dank tunnels buried deep underneath Gaza. They have been there for more than 660 days. Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu still shows no signs of being willing to accept a two-state solution. And innocent civilians in Gaza are paying the price for Hamas' reign of terror. Appalling images of starving children desperately queuing for food have haunted our TV screens and newspaper pages. The only thing that has changed is the news Corbyn is launching a new party to challenge Labour. No10 denies Keir is tearing up 75 years of foreign policy because he is running scared of Jezza. Moved by appalling images of emaciated children, he is launching a last-ditch bid to get Netanyahu to re-engage with the peace process, they say. But recognising the state of Palestine will not put food into the belly of a single hungry child in Gaza. It will not release a single hostage snatched by Hamas as they slept in their beds or danced at a music festival. And it will not bring the Middle East a single step closer to peace. It is the very essence of gesture politics Keir Starmer claims to despise. Biggest danger There is no doubt the new Corbyn party poses a massive challenge for Keir. They plan to target seats with big Muslim populations. There are fears inside Labour that 'London could fall'. Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner are being targeted. Zarah Sultana — a former Labour MP who has switched to Corbyn's party — will run against Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood in Birmingham Ladywood. The loss of all three of these Cabinet big beasts would be a catastrophe for Labour. Sources close to Jeremy say the party could win around ten seats at the next election. Others reckon the number could be higher — more like 20. But the biggest danger to Labour is not the number of seats the party takes, but the number of votes. Pollsters More In Common say the new party could get ten per cent of the vote, mainly from current Labour and Green supporters. By nibbling at Labour's vote, Corbyn and his crew could hand Nigel Farage's Reform Party a seven-point lead — and a majority in Parliament. So vote Jeremy, get Nigel Farage in No10. Labour Party chiefs are expected to hammer this attack line on a Corbyn-led party. Keir Starmer was also under huge pressure from his own party and base to recognise Palestine. Over 100 Labour MPs had signed a letter demanding he do it. A large chunk of the Cabinet had urged him to do the same. But Keir has spent years painting himself as morally upright and principled standing loftily above the self-interest that motivates others. Now the Prime Minister looks like he is recognising Palestine to save his own political skin. As one party insider put it: 'Keir used to say country first, party second. Where does this decision leave that?' How Ozzy helped Jacob to rock up on reality TV AT first glance Jacob Rees-Mogg and Ozzy Osbourne do not have much in common. Why such secrecy at hotel for migrants? BRITAIN'S migrant hotel crisis gets more bizarre by the day. It is outrageous that signs for a four-star Hilton Hotel have been covered up after asylum seekers moved in. Is it to deter protests from a furious local community or to hide the embarrassment of offering luxury lodgings beyond the reach of many taxpayers to all-male illegal arrivals? The turreted Doubletree by Hilton in West London was converted into migrant accommodation in November as part of a deal with the Home Office. Its website shows pictures of luxury rooms which in other Hiltons could go for up to £260 a night and boasts of a gym and top-class restaurant. But of course they are no longer available to the public. Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to close down migrant hotels, used by roughly 32,000 asylum seekers, by the end of the current Parliament in 2029. The policy, first introduced by the Tories, has caused national outrage, as yesterday's protests up and down the country showed. But the Government needs to be open about this crisis. Peter Kyle complained to social media firms about posts critical of asylum hotels. Now we see hotel signs being covered. Secrecy is never the right policy in the face of enormous costs to the taxpayer. And the legitimate concerns of voters footing the £4million-a-day bill cannot be covered up as easily as a hotel sign. Four-star migrant hotel hides Hilton signs after asylum seekers arrive in apparent bid to hide use from protesters
A FOUR-star hotel given over to asylum seekers has taken down its Hilton signs — in an apparent bid to hide it from anti-migrant protesters. It was converted for all-male arrivals in November despite concerns from locals that it is near several schools. 10 10 10 Now bosses at The DoubleTree by Hilton in Cranford, West London — a few miles from Heathrow — have removed all trace of its old identity, covering up the fact it ever hosted tourists and business travellers. Pictures show a large beige tarpaulin spread over a logo across the top of the building. Others have gone or been covered up from the entrance and car park area. Rooms at nearby DoubleTree hotels still open to the public cost between £91 and £260 a night. And snaps from the Cranford hotel last August show off its comfy rooms along with a gym and restaurant, though it is unclear if either of those are available to asylum seekers. Its website simply tells guests trying to book that no rooms are available 'for those dates'. Handing the hotel to migrants without warning has been criticised by a host of locals, including many of Asian heritage. Umme Khanzada, who runs a local environment group, told The Sun on Sunday: 'The hotel has totally changed the community. 'We are not against people coming to the UK or immigration, but the way this hotel has been opened is wrong.' The mum, 49, added: 'My daughter tells me they stare at her. I don't feel safe walking through the streets. I went out to the park and one of the migrants told me, 'This is our park. It's not your park anymore'. 'I think they have covered the signs up to protect DoubleTree and Hilton's reputation.' Emails between residents and Hounslow Council show locals being told: 'This decision was made by the Home Office without prior consultation with the local authority, stakeholders, or residents. 'We understand the frustration and uncertainty this has caused.' Last night ex-Tory minister Sir Alec Shelbrooke fumed: 'What the Government are doing quite frankly represents their utter failure on immigration. And the management of Hilton are taking the King's shilling from the Government, but they're not willing to let the public know that.' The DoubleTree is leased by the Home Office through Clearsprings Ready Homes. Its boss Graham King, dubbed the 'Asylum King', has a reported net worth of £750million. 10 Hilton were approached for comment. In London, a coach full of asylum seekers arrived at a controversial four-star Canary Wharf migrant hotel in the middle of the night. The Britannia International Hotel was closed to paying customers and converted into taxpayer-funded 'surge' accommodation for illegal arrivals last month. When open to the public, a standard room cost up to £425 — though it will cost the Home Office £81 a night. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp told The Sun: 'This is one of the most luxurious hotels people can only dream of staying in, right in the heart of London's financial centre. This is an insult to law-abiding citizens.' The Government said: 'Since taking office, we have removed 35,000 people with no right to be here — up 28 per cent on the previous year. From 400 asylum hotels open in summer 2023, costing almost £9million a day, there are now less than 210. We want them all closed by the end of this Parliament.' ROOMS at the DoubleTree in Cranford come with massive double beds and TVs, the hotel's snaps show. Some also have lounge chairs and tables where residents can sit and work, as well as grand dressing tables and mirrors. 10 10 ARRESTS AT DEMO CLASHES 10 10 PROTESTERS clashed with police yesterday in demonstrations across the UK outside hotels housing asylum seekers. Nine arrests were made after pro and anti-migrant groups scuffled at the Thistle City Barbican in Islington, North London. Similar scenes played out at the New Bridge Hotel in Newcastle. In Manchester, far-right group Britain First held a march calling for mass deportations.
