Met chief praises officers' ‘extraordinary bravery' responding to sword attacker

Independent3 days ago

The head of the Metropolitan Police has praised the 'extraordinary bravery' of the officers who responded to a sword attacker who killed a schoolboy and injured others during a rampage.
Marcus Arduini Monzo, 37, had gone into a cannabis-induced psychosis when he killed 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin with a samurai sword in Hainault, north-east London, on April 30 last year, the Old Bailey heard.
On Wednesday, Monzo was found guilty of Daniel's murder, three charges of attempted murder, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article relating to a kitchen knife.
He was cleared of one count of attempted murder in relation to the victim Henry De Los Rios Polania, but found guilty of the lesser offence of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Monzo previously admitted having the samurai sword used to kill Daniel and a katana sword found in his van.
Sir Mark Rowley said he hopes the verdict 'brings some small semblance of justice and closure' for Daniel's loved ones.
Along with his statement, the Metropolitan Police shared videos on X of the moment police confront Monzo in the street, then chase after him, before one officer is attacked by Monzo while another shouts 'police officer stabbed'.
Clips showing other officers confronting Monzo are also on the video, before it shows him being put in handcuffs.
A separate video has been shared by the force of Monzo filming himself unboxing a sword and describing it as 'freaking sexy'.
Sir Mark praised the 'extraordinary bravery' and 'relentless courage' of the officers who responded to the incident.
'Many will remember the events that unfolded in Hainault in April last year and the shock waves that they sent through communities,' he said.
'The two elements of this case which drew such attention were, of course, the horrendous killing of Daniel, but second to that, the most extraordinary bravery of our officers who responded that day.
'People sometimes talk casually about officers courageously running towards danger, but what happened that day is the most extraordinary example of the relentless courage that leaves 18 officers a day assaulted in London, two seriously injured each week.
'Our colleagues, desperate to protect the community, ran towards an erratic and violent man who had just killed a young child and injured many others.'
He added: ' Two of the officers suffered life-changing injuries, which I know they're still working hard to recover from today, and despite seeing their colleagues suffer those injuries, additional officers, without hesitation, continued to pursue the suspect, using every tactic available to stop this rampage.
'The actions of all those involved that day were truly extraordinary. My heartfelt thanks and admiration remain with them and those who investigated this case and since secured justice for the grieving family.
'It is an absolute privilege to work alongside those who courageously police the streets of London every day, routinely putting their safety at risk in the protection of the public.
'This is a heartbreaking case for all involved, while nothing can take away the pain that they feel, I do hope that today's verdict affords some comfort to Daniel's family.'
Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell said outside court on Wednesday afternoon: 'Marcus Monzo set out that morning under the influence of cannabis, with a clear intention to kill a number of people.
'It didn't matter who they were and sadly, he targeted Daniel in a cowardly and brutal attack.
'A number of other local people were also attacked, seriously injured and threatened that day – and I would like to acknowledge their bravery and resilience in giving evidence in this case.'
He said that police officers and paramedics were on the scene within minutes of Monzo attacking Daniel, adding: 'I am in no doubt that the actions of those officers who arrived to pursue and attempt to detain Monzo saved lives and prevented more harm.'
Monzo will be sentenced on Friday at the Old Bailey.

Man appears in court charged with murder of missing Reanne Coulson

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a missing 34-year-old woman. The family of Reanne Coulson, 34, who has not been seen since May, has been told by West Midlands Police (WMP) that officers found a body in Binley Woods on the edge of Coventry on Friday afternoon. Mohammed Durnion, 42, appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court charged with murder on Saturday and was remanded in custody ahead of a preliminary hearing at Warwick Crown Court on Tuesday, police said. Adam Moore, 38, from Coventry, who is charged with assisting an offender also appeared at Coventry Magistrates on Saturday. He was ordered to next appear in custody at Warwick Crown Court on July 24. Ms Coulson was last seen in the city in May and concerns were raised by her family after she failed to make contact with them on her birthday on June 17. Formal identification of the body found has yet to take place but police have said they 'do believe it is Reanne'. Detective Superintendent Jim Munro, from WMP's major crime unit, said: 'We've been focussed on doing all we can to find Reanne and our thoughts remain with her family at this deeply distressing time. 'While formal identification still needs to take place we do believe it is Reanne. 'We've charged a man with murder, and another for assisting an offender, but our inquiries to establish exactly what happened and why are ongoing. 'We'll continue to update and support Reanne's family.' Ms Coulson's brother Ashley thanked the public for everything they have done to help try and find her while asking that the family are left alone to grieve.

Strictly star mugged in Central London AND in broad daylight as 'traumatic' ordeal leaves them 'scared and helpless'

A Strictly Come Dancing star has been robbed in broad daylight in London this week, leaving her 'scared and helpless'. Professional dancer Michelle Tsiakkas, 29, was on her way to the dentist early in the morning when her phone was snatched. In an emotional post on Instagram, the ballroom star recounted the 'traumatising' incident to fans whilst urging them to stay vigilant. Michelle said in a video message: 'This was a couple of days ago and I've just about mentally recovered from that. It was quite traumatising on the day. 'It wasted my whole day and made me feel awful, scared, helpless and I don't want the same to happen to you. 'My phone got stolen. My phone got stolen. I mean I see it happening all the time but it's just one of those things that you just never think it's gonna happen to you. and then it does.' Michelle, who joined Strictly three years ago, said a man on a bike swiped her mobile while she was in Convent Garden. The brunette explained: 'So it was early morning. I was on my way to the dentist in London. 'It was around Covent Garden so the streets were really quiet. I think I was just the only person around so maybe I was an easy target and I whipped out my phone to have a look at the directions to see where my dentist was. 'I was on the actual street of the dentist and what happens? A man comes on a bike behind me, sweeps past me and grabs my phone. 'So he's grabbed my phone. He's on an electric bike and my heart just sank. I tried to I think like reach for it and that made me fall on my knees on the floor and graze my knee. 'I think my reflex was just to swear and then scream give me back my phone and clearly you know that didn't work. 'He just left. He was wearing a mask so there was no way that I could have seen what he looked like and he was going really fast on that electric bike so there was no way on earth I could have caught up with him. 'Thankfully there were two really lovely and helpful women there and they'd seen that I was a bit distressed.' Michelle was flooded with support from concerned fans as well as her Strictly family, with fellow pro dancer Nancy Xu simply commenting with love heart emojis. Last year Michelle was given her first celebrity pairing by BBC bosses, coupled up with under-fire EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick. Meanwhile, earlier this year it was reported Michelle's Italian hunk boyfriend Simone Arena, 33, is joining the dance competition's line up of dance professionals who are paired with the celebrity contestants. The Italian dancer is no stranger to the Strictly format after previously starring as a pro on the Belgian, Italian and Irish versions of the show. Born in Catania, Italy, Simone has been a professional dancer since childhood, becoming the Vice Italian Latin Champion at the age of 16. He has also performed in the Broadway touring production of Burn the Floor and was also announced as part of the cast of Somnium: A Dancer's Dream with Strictly Come Dancing stars, Katya Jones and Neil Jones, in 2019. Simone joined the Strictly global franchise in 2021, winning the Belgian version of the show with artistic gymnast Nine Derwael. As a professional on the Irish version of the dance competition, he was partnered with RuPaul's Drag Race winner, Blu Hydrangea, as well as Kin actress, Yasmin Seky. A source told the Sun on Sunday: 'Simone blew the Strictly bosses away when he auditioned as a new professional on the show. 'He is no stranger to the Strictly format after previously starring as a pro on the Belgian, Italian and Irish versions of the series. 'Simone is well known among the pros and his girlfriend Michelle [Tsiakkas] loved her time on the series last year.'
