BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai (pic) will be appointed caretaker Prime Minister during a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday (July 2), following an oath-taking ceremony earlier in the day, Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit confirmed.
Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said on Wednesday (July 2) that Suriya, acting as Prime Minister, will lead the new ministers of the second Paetongtarn Cabinet for a royal audience at the Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall on Thursday morning, where they will be sworn in before His Majesty the King.
After the ceremony, Suriya will convene a special Cabinet meeting at the Command Building at Government House at 2pm, the spokesman added.
The new Cabinet was announced on Tuesday, the same day that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended from duty by the Constitutional Court following a petition by a group of senators.
Phumtham will participate in the oath-taking ceremony as he was removed from his previous role as deputy prime minister and defence minister, and reappointed as deputy prime minister and interior minister in the new Cabinet.
Jirayu stated that the special Cabinet meeting would discuss the distribution of responsibilities among deputy prime ministers and certain ministers.
Meanwhile, Suriya confirmed on Wednesday morning that, after the oath-taking ceremony, he would sign an order as acting Prime Minister to appoint Phumtham as caretaker Prime Minister.
A Government House source told Thansetthakij that during the special meeting, the Cabinet would invoke Article 41 of the Act on Rules for Public Administration of the State, BE 2534, to appoint Phumtham as caretaker Prime Minister.
The source said that after Phumtham's appointment, he would invoke Article 11(2) of the Act to distribute responsibilities among the deputy prime ministers. He would assign them to oversee various agencies and ministries.
The source also noted that during the meeting, the Cabinet would be updated on key national situations.
The Cabinet would also be asked to approve an exemption from enforcing a previous Cabinet resolution on mangrove forest protection, to allow the construction of a highway in Chachoengsao.
The source added that the special Cabinet meeting would be brief and conclude after the discussion on the Chachoengsao highway matter. - The Nation/ANN

Sinkhole tragedy report to reach cabinet by year-end, says minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The full report on the sinkhole tragedy at Jalan Masjid India in August last year is expected to reach the Cabinet by the end of this year. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa stated that she recently received the detailed findings and her team is currently reviewing them before submission. 'I've just received the full report, and my team is now studying various aspects of the incident, particularly the cause of the sinkhole. Once the review is complete, I will present it to the Cabinet, probably before the end of the year,' she said after officiating the Mata Hati Wilayah programme. The incident involved an Indian tourist, Vijayaletchumy, who fell into an eight-metre-deep sinkhole while walking with her family near a temple on August 23. Despite extensive search efforts, she was never found. Separately, Dr Zaliha dismissed calls to delay the Kota MADANI project, emphasising its importance in addressing housing shortages for civil servants. 'There are around 17,000 civil servants still waiting for government quarters. The Kota MADANI project will provide around 10,000 units, easing this issue,' she said. The RM4 billion project, developed by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, will include high-density residential units, vertical schools, and public facilities, accommodating over 30,000 residents.

Strategic approach needed for sustainable fiscal savings

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is currently focusing on identifying tax mechanisms that can be implemented and are compatible with the country's existing economic framework. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said any move to introduce new taxes must ensure that the revenue collected is sufficient, justified, and beneficial to the people. "The government is only considering tax options that can be implemented and are suited to our economic system. "If we look at measures such as the luxury tax and capital gains tax, these represent major policy shifts," he said on the Keluar Sekejap podcast hosted by Shahril Hamdan and Khairy Jamaluddin. "What we need to assess is whether the revenue collected from such taxes is adequate to meet our needs and whether it's worth the effort. That's the balancing act we are managing. "The key is that when we move forward, we do so prudently, minimise the impact, and evaluate the outcomes," he added. On RON95 fuel subsidies, Amir confirmed that a targeted subsidy mechanism is scheduled to be implemented before the end of the year, with the Cabinet still finalising the income threshold for eligibility. He said the government is working to determine a fair cut-off point to ensure that subsidies reach those who genuinely need them. "If we are going to define who qualifies, the challenge lies in deciding where to draw that line. "Any new mechanism must not be more burdensome than the current system and should be designed to minimise leakages. "Otherwise, people will find ways to bypass it. We believe using the MyKad is currently the most viable option. I believe most Malaysians are honest and will do the right thing," he said. As for the government's fiscal goals related to subsidies, Amir stressed that decisions should not be based solely on arbitrary savings targets. "We can't just say we want to save RM5 billion or RM3 billion and then make cuts arbitrarily. That's not a compassionate approach," he said. Instead, he said the government needs a sustainable model, similar to the targeted diesel subsidy, to ensure aid reaches the intended groups while protecting them from future price shocks.

Suspended Thai leader Paetongtarn sworn in as Minister in new cabinet lineup

Paetongtarn Shinawatra gesturing as she arrived at Government House before being sworn in as the new culture minster on July 3, 2025. - AFP BANGKOK: Thailand's suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was sworn in as a cabinet minister Thursday (July 3), a manoeuvre allowing her to attend ministerial meetings while awaiting the results of a court review of her alleged misconduct. Paetongtarn, who will be Minister of Culture in the country's newly revamped cabinet, and 13 other ministers were sworn in by King Maha Vajiralongkorn in Bangkok, according to government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub. The ministerial shuffle was announced on Tuesday, hours before the Constitutional Court stripped Paetongtarn of prime ministerial authority. The ruling coalition had aimed to consolidate support from smaller parties following the recent withdrawal of the conservative Bhumjaithai Party, which significantly weakened the alliance's parliamentary majority. The renewed political turbulence has cast fresh doubt on the government's ability to pass critical legislation, including the upcoming budget, and raised questions about its long-term viability. Paetongtarn's father was ousted as prime minister in a military coup, and her immediate predecessor was removed from office by court ruling in August last year. The SET Index is already the world's worst-performing stock benchmark this year. The latest instability stems in part from a controversial phone call last month between Paetongtarn and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, in which they discussed a simmering border dispute between the two countries. A leaked audio of the call triggered an uproar and dented her popularity, leading to speculation that smaller parties in the ruling bloc may explore new alliances, threatening the government's stability. Political "noise could increase in the coming months given concerns about the unity of the Pheu Thai Party-led government's coalition partners,' according to Tim Leelahaphan, a Bangkok-based economist at Standard Chartered Plc. "Increasingly volatile politics, coupled with recent Thai-Cambodian border tensions, have raised fears of a military takeover,' he wrote in a note on Wednesday. The Constitutional Court on July 1 gave Paetongtarn 15 days to respond to the allegations in the petition. Acting Prime Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit is expected to chair a special cabinet meeting later on Thursday, during which deputy prime ministers and ministers within the Prime Minister's Office may be assigned new responsibilities. Phumtham Wechayachai, a senior Pheu Thai politician who was sworn in as Minister of the Interior, is set to take over from Suriya as acting prime minister. - Bloomberg
