New Delhi: The city experienced widespread intense rain and thunderstorms in the second half of Tuesday, bringing substantial relief for Delhiites but also inundating several parts of the city, including sections of
Indira Gandhi International Airport
.
At least 14 flights were diverted.
Around 2.45pm, the city first experienced light to moderate rain along with a thunderstorm. "A second spell was observed in the evening, with an east-to-west squall line moving towards northeast and bringing moderate to intense rain again," said an official of India Meteorological Department.
The maximum temperature, which was 36.2 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal, at 2.30pm, came down to 27.2 degrees around 5.30pm.
The maximum was 35 degrees Celsius on Monday. The weather department expects the rain and thunder activity to continue over the next few days with the possibility of gusty winds.
While base station Safdarjung and Palam recorded wind speeds of 20-30km/hour, a peak wind speed of 43km/hour was observed in Mayur Vihar around 2.45pm. Between 2.30pm and 8.30pm, Pusa recorded 57mm rain, Palam 40.8mm, Safdarjung 28.4mm, Aya Nagar 22.8mm, Ridge 14.4mm and Lodhi Road 6mm.

The maximum intensity was realised till 5.30pm when Palam recorded 37.2mm rain. For June, Safdarjung has logged 69.2mm rainfall till 5.30pm on Tuesday against the long-period average of 74.1mm.
A official of IGIA operator DIAL said, "The Delhi airport witnessed sudden heavy rain this afternoon, due to which drains on the roof near the food court at Terminal 1 overflowed, leading to water coming down to the food court area.
The housekeeping staff deployed there immediately cleared the area, and the operations remained normal."
A yellow alert has been issued for Wednesday. IMD officials said additional moisture feed from Bay of Bengal and a western disturbance led to the widespread rain over a large part of northwest India, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and western UP.
"There are chances of another spell of rain and thunderstorms over Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
Another spell on Wednesday evening is also possible, but of less intensity. From June 19, the chances of rain and thunderstorms will be less," said IMD scientist Krishna Mishra.
On Tuesday, the minimum temperature was 28 degrees Celsius, against 29 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The humidity oscillated between 59% and 98%. The maximum temperature is expected to be 33 to 35 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
IMD said the southwest monsoon further advanced on Tuesday over some more parts of the country, reaching east India, and conditions were favourable for its further progress over the next two days. The normal monsoon arrival date for Delhi is June 27. Given the progression of the southwest monsoon, it's likely to hit the national capital prior to its normal date. However, no date has been predicted yet.
Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality remained in the moderate category. The average air quality index, on a scale of 0 to 500, was 104 against 111 a day earlier.

Typhoon Danas hits Taiwan: 2 killed, hundreds injured; international flights cancelled

People walk in the rain in Taipei, as Typhoon Danas was passing through Taiwan (Image credit: AP) Typhoon Danas slammed into Taiwan's west coast late Sunday, killing two people and injuring nearly 500, according to the Central Weather Administration. By early Monday, almost 400,000 households were still without power. The storm made a rare and direct landfall in Chiayi County—marking the first time on record that a typhoon has struck the area. The agency described Danas's path as 'very unusual,' with gusts reaching up to 222 kilometers (138 miles) per hour in the island's southwest. Though Danas moved north and exited the island by early Monday, it left behind torrential rainfall. More than 500 millimeters (20 inches) of rain fell across southern Taiwan over the weekend, triggering widespread flooding. Among the fatalities, a 60-year-old man died after a power outage disabled his ventilator, while a 69-year-old man was fatally struck by a falling tree while driving. At least 491 people were injured, reported AFP quoting to the National Fire Agency. Emergency crews evacuated around 3,500 residents, primarily from mountainous regions near the southern city of Kaohsiung, due to fears of landslides and flash floods. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Show Off Your Talent: Enter the Ultimate Creator Contest! Taiwan, which routinely faces typhoons between July and October, was especially hard-hit by Danas because of its unusual trajectory and powerful winds, making it one of the most disruptive storms in recent memory.

Vande Bharat Express Stranded For 7 Hours In Odisha As Rains Flood Tracks

Torrential rains in Odisha's Keonjhar district on Saturday brought life to a standstill and severely disrupted railway services, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded aboard the Vande Bharat Express for nearly seven hours. The high-speed train, which was en route from Tatanagar to Berhampur, came to a halt around 7 PM at Guhalidiihi station after heavy waterlogging submerged the railway tracks. Nearly three feet of water was reportedly flowing over the tracks, making it unsafe for the train to proceed. Passengers were forced to remain inside the stationary train for hours. No serious health issues or injuries were reported. Railway authorities said that the safety of passengers was their top priority and assured that no untoward incident occurred during the ordeal. With no immediate improvement in the waterlogged tracks, the railway department eventually dispatched a rescue engine to tow the train to Kendujhargarh station. The Vande Bharat Express finally resumed its journey late at night, over seven hours behind schedule. The administration has been urged to improve response mechanisms during extreme weather events, especially as rainfall continues to affect multiple districts in Odisha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several parts of the state including Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over the next 24 hours due to a low-pressure area formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha. A yellow alert is in place for 17 other districts, predicting heavy rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds. In the Northeastern part of the country, train services connecting South Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and the rest of India via Guwahati were restored on July 4 after being disrupted by a landslide in Assam's Dima Hasao district. The Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section had been blocked by boulders and debris between Dihakho and Mupa stations. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) carried out overnight restoration work, with the Agartala-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express being the first train to pass through the cleared section.

Rain brings relief to Delhi-NCR as temperature dips; 'yellow alert' issued

A spell of early morning rain brought much-needed respite from heat and humidity in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday (July 7, 2025). However, the downpour also led to heavy waterlogging in several parts of the city, affecting traffic movement during peak commuting hours. Multiple areas across the capital witnessed light to moderate rainfall, with visuals showing waterlogged roads and commuters wading through puddles under grey skies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 12.0 mm of rainfall at 8:30 am. The minimum temperature in the city dropped to 22.9 degrees Celsius -- five notches below the seasonal average -- offering a cool start to the day. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 33 degrees Celsius, with a generally cloudy sky and continued rain. A 'yellow alert' has been issued for Monday, with thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall predicted throughout the day. Humidity levels reached 100 per cent at 8:30 am, further adding to the dampness in the air. In a bulletin issued at 6:30 am, the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC), New Delhi, said on X, "Light to moderate rainfall accompanied with light thunderstorm and lightning (30'40 km/h gusty winds) is likely to occur at entire Delhi and NCR during next two hours." The weather office has forecast similar conditions to persist over the next two days, with very light to light rain expected thereafter. Meanwhile, Delhi residents experienced cleaner air, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 81 - categorised as "satisfactory" by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".
