Man of action

Bahraini director and storyteller Mohammed AlFahad has released, what he claims is, Bahrain's first action film, with a bigger project for an accompanying series currently in the works.
The short film, Chasing Dragons: Blades of Faith is also set for its first public screening at the much-awaited Bahrain Comic Con on May 2 and 3.
Set in a dystopian world, the 11-minute production follows protagonists Agent Double8 (Mohammed) and H (Ahmed Bahman), who battle a force of masked warriors as part of a greater mission to track down a mysterious suspect tied to a critical operation that threatens the state of the world as they know it.
The movie blends elements of action, a psychological thriller and science fiction, which delivers intense drama packed with tightly choreographed martial arts sequences, and highlights the 'action' genre that, according to Mohammed, is not common in the local filmmaking scene.
'In Bahrain, we have a lot of comedy and horror filmmakers, and I wanted to create something new for fans of action and superhero movies and comics,' the 36-year-old told GulfWeekly.
'Chasing Dragons started as a passion project in 2020, when we introduced the characters through an episode (short video) titled Operation Corona. People really loved it and wanted more, so after the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted, we returned to the idea. The film was completed in February this year,' he added.
'It draws inspiration from Japanese animation shows, which always have a moral behind their story, and the moral behind Chasing Dragons is to always stand up for what is right and never give up, and that good always trumps evil.'
The creative entrepreneur has had a passion for films since he was a young boy.
'I used to be a theatre kid and acted in theatre productions during my school days and wrote stories and made short films with friends,' he revealed.
He used his degree in accounting and management to launch Hollyoud Studios in 2020, a subsidiary of his company Hollywood Ventures. Since its establishment, the studio has helped local talent by providing casting opportunities, including an upcoming Bollywood Netflix series, which was filmed in Bahrain in February; Mohammed will also feature in some of the action scenes for the show.
'My mission through Hollyoud Studios is to celebrate local talent, we are aiming to continue casting and collaborating with Khaleeji actors, directors and producers, and are hoping to create films in English and Arabic to reach a wide audience,' he said.
The Jeet Kune Do practitioner has a passion for martial arts, which is showcased in the Chasing Dragons universe.
Jeet Kune Do is a hybrid martial art conceived and practised by Bruce Lee, which Mohammed learned during his time living in the US.
'When I was 18, I had the opportunity to move to San Francisco, where I continued my education and began training in martial arts, and was extremely inspired by Bruce Lee, which is reflected in the Chasing Dragons universe,' Mohammed said.
The short film is available to watch on Hollyoud TV on YouTube.

Bahrain: Poet Jailed Over Verbal Abuse

A prominent poet in the Kingdom has been sentenced to six months in prison in a high-profile verbal abuse case filed by a Bahraini singer. The verdict came after the Criminal Court of Appeal overturned a previous acquittal and imposed the custodial sentence. The court also issued a restraining order, prohibiting the poet from contacting the claimant in any form. The case drew significant public interest due to the stature of both parties involved. Lawyer Al Rumaihi, representing the singer, stated that his client had endured repeated verbal abuse and took legal action to safeguard her dignity and reputation. 'The court reversed the earlier ruling and sentenced the defendant to six months in prison,' he said. 'It also barred her from approaching or communicating with my client.' While full details of the case were not disclosed, it stemmed from a series of alleged insults and offensive actions. Al Rumaihi emphasised that the ruling reinforces the principle that no one is above the law. 'Fame does not grant immunity from accountability,' he said.

Rhyme for a reason!

Former Bahrain resident and Scottish national Jess Stansfield has released her debut book Tora The Tiger Learns Her Lessons – a rhyming children's story, which sensitises young minds to nature while also teaching them how to face hardships in life, writes Melissa Nazareth. The 32-page tale, written for children aged between three and seven, follows Tora, a tiger cub who wants to hunt on her own. It takes both the reader and listener on a journey as the wild cat learns how to be a tiger under the watchful eye of her mother. 'The book aims to highlight the plight of endangered animals and the environmental reasons for their predicament,' the 63-year-old learning assistant and former primary school teacher told GulfWeekly. 'Through the medium of a rhyming story, children learn about the perils facing tigers and how they can face similar perils in their own lives. 'I am personally concerned about the planet. It is important to help children develop empathy with the creatures of the earth. 'For many years I have enjoyed writing rhyming verses for relatives and friends to mark special occasions so, it followed that my stories would rhyme,' she added. Jess started work on the book in 2018, when she researched tigers and made many notes about their physical characteristics, habitats, predators and breeding. 'I was working full time at this point, so I was a little sporadic in my approach. Then, Covid-19 struck. As restrictions were lifted, I had to travel to Scotland to see my newly born grandson. However, I had to isolate in a hotel for 10 days. This was the perfect opportunity to get to grips with the story without outside distractions or time limitations,' she reminisced. Tora the Tiger is Jess' first 'official' writing project. Previously, she has written in the capacity of a teacher – stories that she later recorded for a phonics lesson for her class and monthly newsletters to parents. The former Janabiya resident, who called Bahrain home for nine years, worked as a pre-school teacher while she lived in the kingdom; she left in 2023. 'As a book lover from childhood, I made it my mission to 'infect' as many people as I could with the 'book bug',' noted the book-lover, who has had a front-row seat watching her author husband Glen Stansfield at work. 'I have witnessed the range of emotions involved in writing. I could see that, though he experienced many frustrations and disappointments, the thrill of having his own book at the end of it all, made it worthwhile. I began to think maybe I could do it too.'
