Artist Bindhi Rajagopal's works showcase the ecological importance of mangroves

Shades of mossy green, dominate artist Bindhi Rajagopal's latest show, The Grounded Guardians: A Meditation on Mangrove Roots, on at the Durbar Hall Art Gallery. The latest show is an ode to mangroves which form a green wall around the city where it meets the backwaters. Mangroves hold the earth, they prevent natural calamities and they nurture life like a mother would, hence, Bindhi says, she has used them as a recurring motif in the works.
'This is my first solo show in a long time. First came the 2018 floods, then COVID-19… one thing after the other kept happening. The works on show are those that I worked on over this period. These are not all, just some,' she adds, laughing.
Intertwining mangrove roots border some of the works, footprints forming the background for a couple of her latest works. The past impacts the future as much as the present. Bindhi seems to suggest that we have to be careful about what we leave behind for future generations.
'I attended a workshop by a scientist on the role mangroves play in preserving ecology, and that got me curious about them. The idea embedded itself in my mind,' Bindhi explains why she chose mangroves.
Some of the works have a woman with cats, while others have fish and algae-like life forms, all of which seem to draw sustenance from each other. The paintings reveal symbiotic relationship with nature and all its creatures, mankind included. 'I am trying to say through my works how our actions impact all creation, and how we should be responsible.'
Bindhi, an alumnus of RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, has been practising her craft for close to three decades. She held her first show in 1992 followed by one in 1998. Over the years she has been part of solo and group shows in Kerala and abroad and has also curated art shows. She has been an art teacher in a school and later, an assistant professor of visual arts in a college.
She uses visual metaphors and symbolism to get her point across. For instance, one of her paintings done during COVID-19 is actually three - a triptych, which shows three women on three different canvases. All three wear masks, and despite being together they cannot inhabit the same space. The isolation is unmissable. 'Isn't that how we felt during the pandemic? My daughters felt it intensely, not being able to step out or meet friends. That was all of us. The painting is the three of us or it could be anybody!'
The artist is preoccupied with the past, present and future, and how one impacts the other. The works on show bear testimony to it.
The show on at Durbar Hall Art Gallery concludes on April 30.

The works of 13 artists are on display at an exhibition titled Karu, which addresses pressing social issues. Thumbi, the curator of the exhibition, shares that the unique title was originally intended for a magazine. 'We hoped to address more issues and ideas through the magazine. And then, we came across Sree Narayana Guru's Atmopadesha Satakam, and in it was the word Karu. We looked it up in a dictionary and found that it means nucleus, core, and also has other interesting meanings like black, hard, something valuable, a type of drum, etc. All of these meanings connect with the works in the show,' she states. Speaking about the artists participating in the exhibition, she says, 'The artists are people we met during our journey with the art collective Untitled Kitchen. Some of these works were specifically made for the magazine while others are contributions from their existing body of work. For example, Mrudula's poem Postmortem Report, which addressed the suicide of Sidharthan JS, a veterinary university student, allegedly due to ragging. It wasn't published, but after I discussed the idea behind the exhibition, she suggested this work.' One of the featured artists is Devu Nenmara, a labourer who started painting with materials given to her by her son, artist Unnikrishnan, during the COVID lockdown. 'When we included Devu Amma's work, the idea was to reflect on who gets to be called an artist and what qualifies as an artistic practice. Devu Amma painted what she saw growing up — the colours she is familiar with, her memories. Even at her age, she is documenting her world, and that act is what we love to consider as artistic practice. The by-product could be anything — even something an ordinary person may not find visually pleasing — but the act of returning to the work can be considered art,' Thumbi explains.

To commemorate 60 years, the museum is set to unveil a revamped version of its popular Fun Science Gallery, now rebranded as Fun City, this Sunday. The gallery will open to public at the museum building. New look for a long-standing gallery The Fun Science gallery, a fixture at VITM for years, has undergone a complete overhaul. The redesigned space features 40 exhibits, digital interfaces, and an updated layout, covering topics such as illusion art, fluid dynamics, pendulums, multi-colour shadows, classical mechanisms, and more. "On busy days, we see 5,000 to 10,000 visitors. The galleries are already full. We've raised the issue with the govt, but there's been no resolution yet." Cubbon Park's zoning restrictions and fire safety norms rule out vertical expansion as well. Another challenge is the diminishing attention span of visitors. "We provide detailed labels and videos, but most visitors skip them. Even 3-4 minute clips are often found to be too long," Bhaskaran said. Footfall recovers, but costs rise After a sharp dip during the pandemic, visitor numbers are slowly returning to pre-Covid levels. "We used to receive around 10 lakh visitors annually. That dropped to about 3 lakh during the pandemic. Last year, we climbed back to 9 lakh," Bhaskaran said. To manage rising operational costs, VITM will marginally increase ticket prices from Rs 95 to Rs 100 from Aug 1. "We're required to revise prices for maintenance. We have a small team of 80 handling administration and upkeep, despite heavy footfall," Bhaskaran added. Looking ahead Plans are already in place to renovate the electro-technical gallery next year. "The goal is to ignite curiosity. We want every visitor, especially children, to realise that science is not out of reach. Science is evolving constantly, and while we are doing our best to keep up, we need more space to grow," Babu said. Gaurav Khatri, inspired by Kabaddi from a young age, joined Puneri Paltan in Season 9 as an injury replacement. Despite losing the final, they won the trophy in Season 10. Puneri Paltan's star defender Gaurav Khatri's story is nothing short of a Bollywood script. Having been brought up in a household where Kabaddi was a known sport, Khatri's interest piqued at a very early age, even featuring in local tournaments at age 15. Being a part of Pro Kabaddi League had always been on his bucket list and this bucket was finally ticked when he was picked up by Puneri Paltan as an injury replacement during Season 9. While the side missed to lift the cup by a whisker, losing to Jaipur Pink Panthers in the final, they eventually got their hands on the coveted trophy in the very next edition. The Paltan and Khatri are now gearing up for Season 12 and want to replicate the kind of performance they had unleashed in Season 10. 'We are very confident and ready for the upcoming season. We want to repeat the way we played in Season 10. We will give our 100%. The raiding department has got some more strength with the addition of Sachin (Tanwar) bhai. Aslam (Inamdar), Mohit (Goyat) and Pankaj (Mohite) were already there, so we are going to work hard," he said during the latest episode of the 'Rise of a Star' series. Khatri got into the team after one of the players was affected by COVID-19 during Season 9. It was a clash against the Bengaluru Bulls where he first got a chance to showcase his talent. 'During the encounter against Bengaluru Bulls in one of the matches (in Season 9), I got my first opportunity when the coach asked me to go in as a substitute. Obviously, I felt nervous but at the same time, it was a good feeling as I was living my dream. I did my first tackle against Bharat Hooda who was the best raider at that time. I got points for my team and felt good about it. We lost the game but the team was pretty happy with my performance," Khatri said. 'Then, the coach showed more trust in me and made me play in the semi-final and final matches of the season. I got a chance in the semis because Sombir was out due to fever. I didn't have any experience of playing in the playoffs but the coach gave me the confidence," he further added. The young defender considers himself fortunate to be part of a championship-winning team so early in his career. Reflecting on his journey, he said, 'When I came in Season 10, there was of course some pressure, but at the same time, everyone motivated me. They gave me a free hand and encouraged me to play my natural game. I feel lucky and very fortunate that I became a champion in just my second season" A key influence in his early days was Iranian star Mohammadreza Shadloui. 'I also shared a very good bond with Mohammadreza Shadloui. He treated me like a younger brother," he added. Khatri expressed heartfelt gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support throughout the Pro Kabaddi League. 'The Pro Kabaddi League has truly changed my life. It's given me a platform, an identity, and the chance to grow as a player," he concluded.
