DOSM: Ageing farmers in Sarawak highlight need to attract youth to agriculture
KUCHING (July 9): The ageing workforce in Sarawak's agriculture sector must be urgently addressed by increasing youth participation, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Sarawak.
In a statement issued in conjunction with the launch of the Sarawak-level Agriculture Census Interim Report 2024 today, the department said the findings from the census underscored the need to strengthen the support ecosystem for farmers, especially in areas such as skills training, technology transfer and productivity enhancement.
'This situation also calls for the implementation of comprehensive and integrated policies in line with the National Agrofood Policy 2.0 (NAP 2.0), which emphasises food security, sustainability and competitiveness in the agrofood sector,' DOSM said.
The report was launched by State Minister for Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.
DOSM Sarawak reported that a total of 147,414 agricultural holdings were recorded in the state as of 2023, with 98.6 per cent (145,378 holdings) individually owned and 1.4 per cent (2,036 holdings) held by organisations.
Nearly all the individuals involved in agriculture (99.9 per cent) were Malaysian citizens, and 80 per cent were male.
In terms of age distribution, 43.6 per cent of individual holdings were owned by those aged 60 and above, while 37.3 per cent were owned by individuals aged 46 to 59, further illustrating the sector's ageing demographic.
Meanwhile, the report reaffirmed that oil palm remains Sarawak's dominant commodity, contributing 79 per cent to the total value of the state's agriculture sector.
At the national level, oil palm generated RM83.30 billion in sales in 2023, with Sarawak accounting for RM18.61 billion or 22.3 per cent of the national total.

Are you spared? Water tariff set to rise in second phase, Selangor exco says two categories exempt
SHAH ALAM, July 10 — Two categories of consumers in Selangor are expected to be spared from the upcoming water tariff hike, said state Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim. He said the two categories are recipients of the Skim Air Darul Ehsan (SADE) free water programme, which covers the B40 group, as well as domestic and commercial users who consume less than 20 cubic metres of water. He said the adjustment marks the second phase of the water tariff increase, which came into force on Feb 1, 2024. 'The increase is being implemented in stages. The first phase, which took place earlier this year, involved the commercial sector, with a slight adjustment for domestic users. 'For this second phase, it was initially planned for July 1, but there has been a slight delay. We are now awaiting approval from the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) to proceed,' he told reporters at Wisma Dewan Negeri Selangor today. On Jan 19 last year, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the new water tariff rates for over eight million consumers, effective Feb 1, 2024. The adjustment covers 2,661,743 accounts, including domestic and non-domestic users, ranging from houses of worship and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to multinational corporations. According to Amirudin, the minimum charge for domestic users, including low-cost housing, condominiums, estates, and government quarters, will increase slightly from RM6 to RM6.50. Commenting further, Izham said the state government had submitted an application to SPAN to raise water tariffs, but the process was implemented in stages since last year due to the large number of consumers involved. He explained that the water utility company had been operating at a loss, as tariffs had not been adjusted for a long time. 'That's why we applied for a tariff increase, to ensure that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) can continue operating effectively. Currently, a significant amount of expenditure is required for water management,' he said. Earlier today, the Selangor government held an engagement session with SPAN to discuss water regulation issues in the state. The session, led by Amirudin and attended by Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), was held in conjunction with the visit of SPAN chairman Datuk Abdul Kadir Mohd Din to the Menteri Besar's office. Yesterday, SPAN, in a statement, disclosed that it had received applications from water service operators in 10 states to review their respective water supply tariffs. As of June 30, applications had been received from operators in Penang, Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, and Selangor. In a Facebook post following his meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Anwar said the high-level engagement reflected a shared commitment to elevate Malaysia–US relations to the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He said the meeting opened avenues for enhanced cooperation in several key sectors, including digital investment, artificial intelligence, defence and education. 'We also exchanged views on pressing regional issues, including the situations in Palestine, Ukraine and Myanmar,' he said. Anwar also raised Malaysia's concerns over Washington's planned 25% import tariff on Malaysian goods, announced by Trump earlier this week. 'Malaysia views such unilateral actions as disruptive to the flow of free trade and potentially harmful to regional economic growth, especially for trading nations like Malaysia,' he said. Fibre network probe: MACC seizes RM620mil worth of assets, including golf club, luxury cars
SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized several properties and other assets estimated to be worth over RM620mil following an investigation into the approval of a bank loan to a company involved in a fibre network development project valued at approximately RM400mil in 2012, Sinar Harian reports. Sources told the Malay language daily that MACC had recorded statements from nine witnesses to aid the investigation. "The seized properties include bungalows, condominiums, office premises, plots of land, and a golf club located around the Klang Valley, valued at about RM620mil. The suspect is also believed to be a shareholder in the golf club," the source told Sinar Harian. Additionally, four luxury vehicles worth approximately RM2mil were also seized. Further, the source revealed that 72 accounts, comprising personal and company accounts amounting to about RM390,000, have been frozen. MACC special operations senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the information when contacted, adding that a Declaration of Assets Notice under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009 will be issued to the suspect and 23 other individuals starting July 10, 2025. On June 30, MACC remanded a company director, a man with the title Datuk Wira in his 50s, suspected of involvement in money laundering amounting to approximately RM75mil. The suspect is believed to have undertaken these actions in 2012 to secure a loan approval of RM400mil for a fibre network development project. Initial investigations by MACC suspect that the RM75mil was channeled into the suspect's company.
