Fun-loving Gaupset grabs her moment in Norway win over Iceland

THUN: Norway's Signe Gaupset grabbed her chance with both hands when coach Gemma Grainger gave her a first start at a major tournament, scoring Norway's first two goals and creating two more in a 4-3 win over Iceland in their final Group A game at the Women's Euros on Thursday.
Described by many in Norway as the country's best-kept footballing secret, Brann attacker Gaupset dominated every time she got on the ball, scoring twice in 11 first-half minutes and teeing up Frida Maanum for two second-half goals.
"I found out (I'd be playing) yesterday morning. I slept really well, just really excited for the game. And yeah, I was looking forward to it, having fun and playing my game, and that worked today," she told Reuters after picking up her player of the game award.
"I just did what I normally do when I'm at my club, and it worked really well," Gaupset said when asked how she had prepared for her first start.
"I didn't think too much and just wanted to have fun, and that always works for me – when I have fun, that's when I play my best football, so I did that today."
Well known in her home country for her physical, bustling style and her awareness on the ball, the 20-year-old has added goals to her game this season, scoring 10 in the Norwegian league for SK Brann before joining up with the national team.
Asked if she had dreamt of such a performance on her first start at a major championship, Gaupset beamed.
"I always think about wanting to affect the game and play as good as possible," she said, "but no, that's over what I could have dreamed of. But it was really fun."

Soccer-Sweden and Feyenoord great Kindvall dies at 82

(Reuters) -Former Sweden striker Ove Kindvall, who scored the winning goal for Feyenoord in the 1970 European Cup final, has died at the age of 82, the Dutch club said in a statement on Tuesday. Kindvall joined the Eredivisie side in 1966 and spent five prolific seasons in the red and white, scoring 129 goals in 114 league matches. Feyenoord won their only European Cup with a 2-1 win over Celtic after Kindvall netted the winner in extra time. They were the first Dutch club to win the continent's elite competition. Kindvall was also a national hero after playing a key role in securing Sweden's place at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. He also took part in the 1974 finals in West Germany. Soccer-Former West Germany World Cup winner Mill dies aged 67

(Reuters) -Former West Germany striker and World Cup winner Frank Mill has died aged 67, the German FA (DFB) said on Tuesday. The Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Moenchengladbach player was part of the West Germany squad at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where they lifted the trophy after a 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the final. German media said Mill suffered a heart attack in May shortly after getting in a taxi in Milan. He was later flown back to Germany but never recovered. Born in Essen, Mill earned 17 caps and was part of his country's squad that claimed bronze at the 1988 Olympic Games. "We mourn the loss of Frank Mill, our 1990 world champion," the DFB said in a statement. "Rest in peace, Frank. Our thoughts are with his family and friends." Cycling-Olympic champion Evenepoel to join Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe team

FILE PHOTO: Cycling - Tour de France - Stage 11 - Toulouse to Toulouse - Toulouse, France - July 16, 2025 Soudal Quick-Step's Remco Evenepoel before stage 11 REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File Photo (Reuters) -Belgian Olympic gold medallist Remco Evenepoel will leave Soudal Quick-Step and join Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe at the end of the 2025 season, his current team said on Tuesday. The 25-year-old former Vuelta a Espana winner, who won gold in the road race and time trial at last year's Paris Games, joined Soudal Quick-Step in 2019, and was contracted to the team until the end of 2026. "Representatives of Remco informed the team's management that he did not wish to discuss an extension of his current agreement," Soudal Quick-Step said in a statement. "The team's ownership and management have decided that it is in best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season." In December, Evenepoel collided with the open door of a vehicle while training in Belgium, suffering multiple fractures, a dislocated collarbone and contusions to both lungs. He underwent surgery and worried he might have to retire, but returned to competition in April. Evenepoel was third overall when he abandoned the Tour de France during the 14th stage last month.
