Town's move for Grimsby winger hits late roadblock

Swindon Town's move for Grimsby Town winger Charles Vernam looks to be in jeopardy after a breakdown in negotiations.
As reported by The Adver this week, Swindon were involved in negotiations to take Vernam from their League Two rivals as Ian Holloway looked to add a new option to his attacking arsenal.

However, the 28-year-old was set to travel to Swindon yesterday to complete his medical and iron out all of the details, but this ended up bringing about complications, and any further actions were abruptly cancelled.
No agreement ended up being reached, as first reported by The Moonraker, as the winger decided against moving his family down from their base in Lincolnshire, having learned about the move after a deal between the two clubs had already been struck.
Vernam was born in Lincoln and has played for both Grimsby and Lincoln City, and has pursuits beyond football in his local area, which he has decided not to leave behind to reunite with Holloway.
The pair worked together whilst the 62-year-old was in charge of The Mariners, arguably the best spell of Vernam's career as he scored seven goals in 27 appearances in the 2019/20 season, scoring the EFL Goal of the Season and earning a move to Burton Albion.

The winger is likely to remain available this summer as Dave Artell looks to streamline his current group, so if issues can be fixed, then it is not impossible that Swindon revisit it at a later date.
Holloway had been hoping that Vernam could fill the void in his attacking options of a natural winger, who is capable of taking players on and getting the ball into the box.
Town's boss is a big fan of the 28-year-old from his time at Grimsby, saying of him when he was in charge at Blundell Park: 'Charles Vernam is looking beautiful. One of his turns there, the kid went and bought a haddock and chips – or a pie, whatever he eats – he sold him such a dummy it was unbelievable!
'It was like 'Hang on, where's he gone?' And it's beautiful."

Swindon are still searching for at least two more attacking reinforcements, in addition to Aaron Drinan, whose new contract was expected to be signed this week, as Holloway hopes to fill up his attacking options.
Having strength in depth in attack was a big part of Swindon's success last season, with the "starters and finishers" policies allowing them to pull multiple improbably late comebacks over the likes of AFC Wimbledon and Bradford City.
Vernam, it was hoped, would have been part of that, but Swindon will have to return to their list of options to find a new player capable of filling that hole, on top of a back-up striker, which is coveted by Holloway.
In attacking areas of Town's 24-man squad, Town presently have Paul Glatzel, Danny Butterworth, Botan Ameen, and Harry Smith signed up for next season, with Dani Gonzalez and George Alston expected to gain more experience away from the Nigel Eady County Ground next season.

How Brighton Forward Became A Target For Two Premier League Rivals

(Photo by) Joao Pedro enjoyed an excellent 2024/25 season. The Brazilian forward was a key figure for Brighton, registering 16 goals and assists in 27 Premier League appearances. These numbers were enough to attract the attention of Chelsea and Newcastle United with both clubs interested in signing Pedro this summer. Recent reports claim Chelsea and Newcastle have opened talks with Brighton over a move for the 23-year-old. Liverpool has also been mentioned as another club that could get involved in the race to sign Pedro who is ready to take the next step in his development. He is a high-potential attacker. Newcastle, meanwhile, is intent on strengthening its forward line for the new season. After missing out on Bryan Mbeumo, Pedro has been identified as a target. Pedro isn't just a goal threat in and around the opposition penalty area. Indeed, the 23-year-old is extremely versatile and is comfortable playing a number of different roles across the forward line. Pedro operated as a centre forward for Brighton last season, but also as something of a number 10 behind a focal point up front. This is surely why Chelsea and Newcastle both want Pedro. Both teams already boast top-level centre forwards and so Pedro would be expected to fill in around the likes of Alexander Isak and Delap with Nicolas Jackson also a factor at Stamford Bridge. He would offer a lot of cover in various positions. BRENTFORD, ENGLAND - APRIL 19: Joao Pedro of Brighton & Hove Albion in action during the Premier ... (Photo by Vince Mignott/) As a modern forward, Pedro ticks a lot of boxes. He is comfortable with the ball at his feet. He can beat an opponent in the dribble. He can finish inside the area, and also outside of it. Pedro is position-less in the way he interprets his role in Brighton's fluid frontline and this makes him a good fit for countless teams at the elite level. Brighton reportedly wants more than £50m for its prize asset, reflecting the value of the Brazilian to the south coast outfit. The Seagulls have a reputation for being one of the smartest clubs in the Premier League and so Pedro will only leave the Amex Stadium if it suits the selling club. Brighton will need to find a replacement. Chelsea and Newcastle would both give Pedro a platform to prove his quality in the Champions League next season. The Brazilian is certainly good enough for this level and might even be targeting a starting place for his national team at the 2026 World Cup. This could be a pivotal summer in Pedro's career.

🎥 Remembering Havertz making his mark in debut Arsenal season

Arsenal's recent Premier League journey remains one of hope despite finishing second-best in three consecutive seasons under Mikel Arteta. Despite growing frustrations surrounding whether or not the club gets over the line in the end, many recent signings have helped the former Gunners midfielder move the needle on the pitch, with Kai Havertz key among them. Advertisement The German international has become an integral cog in the wheel at the Emirates since arriving from league rivals Chelsea on this day two years ago. A former wunderkind at Bayer Leverkusen, the Aachen-born midfielder-come-forward would go on to score 13 goals in the Premier League across an influential debut campaign on the other side of London, with a late winner against Brentford providing proof of his growing importance to the club on the pitch. Havertz rose highest in the box to get on the end of a Ben White cross after the England international was slipped into the box by Martin Ødegaard, with the German cancelling out Yoane Wissa's first-half equaliser after Declan Rice's 19th-minute opener. Shrewsbury sign Sang from Port Vale

Shrewsbury Town have signed versatile 25-year-old Tom Sang from Port Vale. Sang has signed a two-year deal with the Croud Meadow club, who were relegated to League Two last season after finishing bottom of League One. Advertisement He made 32 appearances for Port Vale as they finished second in League Two to secure promotion last season. The Shrews' director of football Micky Moore said: "Tom is a really good footballer. He started at Manchester United as an attacking midfielder and, like Tom Anderson, Sam Clucas, Sam Stubbs and Will Boyle, he arrives having a promotion on his CV." He added: "He can play and in multiple positions and is also a great person. "His arrival means we now have 18 players in the squad, which I think gives Michael Appleton a great opportunity to get his principles and ideas into the group early."
