'I made one smart and easy switch to my dogs meals and it saved me over £200 a year'

As a devoted owner of two rescue Staffie crosses, Phoebe and Frank, their nutritional wellbeing is my number one priority. However, we recently faced a challenging decision that turned out to be one of our best yet.
Our usual dog food was steadily increasing in price, and Phoebe, the fussier eater, began showing disinterest at meal times. After evaluating various different brands based on cost, nutritional content, and customer reviews, we finally made the decision to swap their diet, opting for a subscription of Forthglade's Lightly Baked Lamb Kibble, which has proven to be a godsend for various reasons.
The dry food subscription offers options of 2kg, 6kg, 12kg, and 18kg bags. Although prices fluctuate depending on the flavour, the lamb variety starts at £12.59, reduced from £13.99.
We choose the 12kg option as it lasts us precisely four weeks. If you have a smaller dog, the same 12kg could last considerably longer - potentially eight to 12 weeks depending on size, resulting in further savings, reports the Mirror.
Each month, two 6kg bags of nutritionally balanced kibble are delivered to our doorstep with complimentary next-day delivery. I particularly appreciate the convenience of receiving two 6kg bags instead of a single 12kg bag, as it's easier to handle and helps maintain the freshness of the food.
The subscription is priced at £62.99, a reduction from the usual £69.99, already providing savings as our previous food cost was £80 per month. In total, we're pocketing around £17 each month, equating to over £200 annually, and that's before considering the exclusive subscriber benefits.
For instance, I secured a substantial discount on my initial order, paying less than £50 for the first month.Subsequently, with each renewal of our subscription, we've accumulated 'rewards', and currently have approximately £8 in our account that we can opt to deduct from a future order. I could choose to make one month slightly cheaper, or accumulate my credits until I have enough for a 'free' bag.
Forthglade isn't the only brand offering subscription services for their food. Elsewhere, Marleybones is granting new customers 30% off their trial selection boxes, while Butternut Box is serving up 25% off the first two boxes for owners in similar subscription schemes.
One aspect I particularly like about the Forthglade subscription is its flexibility. We're due to go on holiday soon and our order would have arrived whilst we were away, so we simply postponed our delivery by two weeks with a few clicks. No phone calls, no hassle, just a straightforward online adjustment. Even better, it was dispatched three hours later and arrived the following afternoon, with next day delivery included as standard.
Another reason we opted to adjust our subscription was due to the fact that our orders were consistently placed on a Saturday, leading to delivery on Monday. We've since changed this, and now our deliveries arrive on Thursday, which suits us much better.
It's super flexible, too, with the ability to skip, pause, or delay orders with ease. Forthglade emails reminders before dispatch, plus, there's no binding contract, allowing for cancellation at any time should it not meet your needs.
But ultimately, the true test is whether Phoebe and Frank take to it, and I'm thrilled to report it's been clean bowls all round - the lamb variety has been a standout favourite after years of chicken kibble.
This sentiment is shared by other pet owners on Trustpilot, where Forthglade boasts a 4.6-star rating. One reviewer praised: "The website is helpful for allowing you to make choices. Customer services are responsive and address any issues directly with you - a real person not a Bot. Food is delivered quickly, well packaged. Most importantly I don't think in the three months we have had our pup, I have wasted a single ounce of dried food as she dives on it every day.'
"I have just changed my subscription with Forthglade and it was so easy to do," shared another satisfied customer. "It's so far so good as my boys are now on the Senior dog wet food. The delivery is always so prompt. Keep up the good work."
However, some customers expressed a desire for more variety. One pet owner stated: "I have been getting the Salmon/Sardine multipack on subscription for a few months now and my dog loves it. Easy to change delivery days with subscription and never worry about running out. Great for my dogs allergies who can only have fish but wish the multipack had more than 2 flavours for more variety.
"Subscription order came on time, notification was received of when payment was taken, my 3 little dogs are very happy that Mum didn't run out of their chew sticks," wrote another, adding, "It's one less thing to think about when doing my shopping."
In the past, I used to place orders manually, but the Forthglade subscription has truly been a blessing, eliminating one task from my life admin to-do list. The next day delivery is convenient, and the perks are a real bonus. Plus, I've frequently ordered their treats and wet food from there too, so now everything arrives simultaneously.
One crucial aspect for me was ensuring we weren't compromising quality for convenience - Forthglade remains a premium brand, but they simply know how to cater to their customers. It's one of the easiest, smartest switches we've made, and my only regret is not doing it sooner.

Pensioner uses life savings for a cruise which goes round and round the world 'with no end'

Sharon Lane sold everything she owns to get a place on the ship which will be at sea continuously for a minimum of 15 years A 77-year-old woman has told how she sold everything she owned for a place on a cruise ship where she plans to spend the rest of her life. Sharon Lane said the moment she stepped on to the Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship she felt full of joy. She has now signed up to stay on the cruise ship for at least the next 15 years. It will sail around the world again and again with no end port. It will stop off at glamorous spots across the globe and, unlike other cruise ships, the majority of passengers on the Villa Vie Odyssey - the First Perpetual World Cruise - are long-term residents. ‌ Sharon had been looking for a life at sea and said when she found the liner she felt relieved. She has signed up to spend at least the lifespan of the vessel - 15 years - onboard. Most passengers sign up to spend the rest of their lives on the ship. ‌ She plunged her life savings into buying her cabin last year and, after a delay of several months, set sail on her new life at the end of September 2024 when the Odyssey cruised through her hometown of San Diego, reports the Mirror. Sharon said she was keen to see the world but also the chance to meet interesting people. Villa Vie Residences' CEO Mikael Petterson explained: "We have a very diverse community including a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a White House chief of staff, an astronaut, and many scientists and doctors onboard who share their knowledge and experiences." And if it's something you might fancy doing in your retirement, there are cabins available. But they aren't cheap. ‌ The lowest cost accommodation is an 'inside' cabin that is going for $129,000 (£93,000) for 15 years, with an extra $2,000 (£1,495) per person monthly fee for double occupancy, and $3,000 (£2,180) for single occupancy. If those prices stay the same, a single occupancy cruiser would fork out £392,400 in cabin fees alone across 15 years. ‌ However, the figure is low in comparison to the World, which is the only other cruise ship currently at sea. Prices for that begin at $2.5 million. Included in the deal are food and soft drinks, alcohol at dinner, Wi-Fi, medical visits, 24/7 room service, weekly housekeeping, and bi-weekly laundry service. The lack of laundry is something Sharon, from California enjoys. She said: 'I don't have to do my laundry anymore. I don't have to do grocery shopping. ‌ "Living on the ship is much less expensive than living in Southern California." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Other amenities for passengers, according to Villa Vie's website, include a pickleball court, different shows and performances, wellness classes, and social events, from elegant dinners to casual meet-ups. ‌ Villa Vie owners can rent their cabin out to others, which means short-term passengers can come and go from the Odyssey. The Odyssey usually stops in each port for a couple of days, where optional shore excursions are organised for an additional fee. The eight-deck Odyssey can accommodate 924 people, but it has been reconfigured and streamlined to a roomier 450. The ship's voyage did not get off to a smooth start, as it became stranded in Belfast for four and a half months last year. The Odyssey arrived in the Northern Ireland capital back in May 2024 to be fitted out before it was scheduled to sail off on the 30th of that month. Due to issues with the rudders and gearbox, the vessel ended up staying put for four and a half months. It finally set sail on October 3.

People struggling UK heatwave say Amazon's £31 pool is 'best thing ever'

The pool has been a hit with shoppers - and it's currently available to order with Amazon for delivery as soon as tomorrow As the UK experiences a heatwave, with temperatures predicted to exceed 30C in some areas, Brits are on the hunt for ways to stay cool. A heat health warning has been issued across most of the country, prompting many to invest in fans, air conditioners and plenty of ice cream. For those looking to combat the sudden rise in temperature and make the most of their outdoor spaces, investing in a paddling pool could be a good idea. If you have the room, a refreshing dip can not only beat the heat, but it can also provide endless hours of summer entertainment, especially for kids. Amazon is one of the few online retailers offering a selection of paddling pools in all shapes and sizes that can be delivered. A popular option is the Bestway Family Inflatable Swimming Pool, retailing at £30.95, reports the Mirror. However, several other alternatives are worth considering, such as the Bestway 8ft Paddling Pool (Argos, £40) or the Intex Swim Centre Square Family Inflatable Lounge Pool (£34, Smyths Toys). Amazon's pool isn't just for the little ones; adults can enjoy it, too. The integrated seats and 'convenient' cup holders make overseeing playtime a bit more comfortable, according to Amazon. On its website, Amazon states that customers who order today (July 1) can expect delivery as early as tomorrow (July 2). The pool's price on Amazon is a bargain, as it is on Bestway's website at £54.99. Many customers who splurged on the pool have also been snatching up the £10 Bestway Swimming Pool Cover on Amazon to keep "dirt and debris accumulating in the pool." The reviews are full of compliments on the pool. One said: "We bought this as a good compromise between a tiny kiddies paddling pool and a big sturdy pool. Happily, it fits a couple of adults and a few kids. Husband loves the cup holder. I think he may have spent more time in the pool than the kids!" Another offered high praise: "Best paddling pool we've had, love the little seats and headrests and cup holders." A third added: "Love this pool. It's great for cooling off in the summer heat." However, not all experiences were positive. One customer reported the pool "goes down after an hour" while another cautioned that it's "prone to punctures". A third claimed: "Easy to set up, started to fill it up and the top section had deflated in 10 mins, so couldn't be used. It is a good size and design, just a shame didn't get to use it." But, the majority of reviews were glowing. Another customer reported: "Didn't take long to inflate using a foot pump. It's been up six days now and is still fully inflated. Great pool, would fit four easily, although there are only two seats/cushions. But it's perfect for me. Lovely to cool off in with a glass of red on a hot sunny day." A fifth satisfied shopper joked: "This should not be shared with children! I used this all summer in my tiny garden - so comfortable- perfect for sunbathing with a cocktail."

Dunelm's 'stylish' £35 sun lounger adds 'Mediterranean vibes' to any garden

People are raving about the 'comfort and style' of this affordable chair that 'looks great in summer' Brits are expected to soak up some much-anticipated summer weather this week, and this might mean the hunt for budget-friendly outdoor furniture. There's no need to splash out to find a chic garden set to enjoy the incoming 30C sunshine. Dunelm's Helsinki Lounger, priced at a reasonable £35 per chair, offers a selection of vibrant colours - including two shades of blue, a coral pink and a charcoal grey. Most Dunelm stores have the lounger ready for same-day click-and-collect, allowing shoppers to make the most of the sunny weather without waiting for a delivery. The retailer shared on its website: " This lounger redefines outdoor comfort, inviting you to unwind in luxurious tranquillity. The adjustable backrest allows for personalised reclining positions, ensuring optimal comfort for lounging or soaking up the sun's rays." Crafted with "durable materials" the lounger is said to be built to last through the often unpredictable British summer weather, reports the Mirror. Dunelm added that "this lounger will provide longevity without compromising on style or comfort". For those looking to grab a bargain on garden chairs just in time for the warm spell, options like the Folding Metal Zero Gravity Sun Lounger (Argos, £45) or the Colorado Grey Metal Sun Lounger (B&Q, £50) are available. However, the Dunelm offering remains a firm favourite among many shoppers. In the reviews, one customer said: "A super stylish and comfortable lounger. Excellent quality and well-made. Great Summer colour. Good value for money." Lulu added: "Bought these chairs last summer, they have been fantastic. I've taken them on holiday and used them at home, very comfortable." Phil shared his satisfaction: "Seems a very good and early indication is a good product too - so much so we went back and bought a second one!" And Frances suggested: "Good value for money sun lounger ideal for my small patio. I went for the colour green which gives Mediterranean vibes." However, not all feedback was glowing, as Lucy claimed: "Sun faded after a week which is a real shame as I was so excited and loved the colour." Fiona also encountered the same problem, writing: "Within two week of using this the plastic arms have faded. Making it look much older than it is." Despite these issues, the majority of the 200 reviews celebrated the chair's five-star performance. A satisfied shopper said: "beautiful chair, I bought 4. Such nice colours and perfect for summer." And another added: "Amazing chair, I went back to buy another one because my husband was so jealous! Very comfortable, good quality, has survived a few nights I've accidentally left outside!" With summer making its presence felt this week and temperatures expected to soar to 30C in some parts of the UK, Brits are gearing up to enjoy the heatwave. However, the sunny weather comes with health advisories. The NHS provides extensive advice on how to protect yourself and children from the sun, highlighting the dangers of sunburn and its link to skin cancer. More details on protective measures can be found through the resources provided by Cancer Research UK.
