Sports update: Boks & Proteas secure wins

Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner captured their first Wimbledon titles, Chelsea won the Club World Cup title in the USA and the Springboks beat Italy in Gqeberha to take their series 2-0.
There were all sorts of other actions across the globe as well. England and India were embroiled in an exciting cricket Test match, while MotoGP action was underway, and Banyana Banyana was in action in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).
And the action continues this week, with the Boks taking on Georgia in Mbombela, the Proteas in action in a tri-series with hosts Zimbabwe and New Zealand and plenty more to keep sports fans entertained.

Banyana find Wafcon stride reaching quarters with thrashing of Mali
Banyana Banyana found their roar at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as they put Mali to the sword in a 4-0 win in their final Group C game in Oujda on Monday night to emphatically book their place in the quarterfinals. Lebohang Ramalepe opened the scoring in just the fifth minute at Stade d'Honneur then captain Refiloe Jane added another with a 32nd-minute free-kick. In the second half Hildah Magaia (61st) and substitute Ronnel Donnelly (79th) completed a hefty scoreline that will give Banyana momentum and confidence going into the knockout stage. Coach Desiree Ellis' team needed a point to be sure of progression, though could still have gone through with a defeat, which was confirmed when Ghana thrashed Tanzania 4-1 in Berkane to go to second place above Mali. The South African defending champions, though, after a 2-0 opening win against Ghana where they played well in patches, then disappointing 1-1 draw against Tanzania, chose to go through to the quarters showing their intent to retain their title. Banyana clinched top place in Group C and will meet Senegal, the third-placed finishers in Group A with three points behind hosts Morocco and Zambia (both seven points), in their quarterfinal on Saturday. An advantage for South Africa is they stay at Stade d'Honneur, where they played their three group games. Senegal played in Mohammedia twice and Rabat once. The South Africans were forceful in attack against a solid Mali. Banyana ground possession from the West Africans and absorbed Mali's decent forward movement with strong defence. They worked hard for each other in the opening half and the result was a 2-0 lead by the break. Livewire attacker Jermaine Seoposenwe was involved in both those strikes. She battled for the ball in the middle then fed Banyana's irrepressible midfielder Ramalepe on the right to pick her spot with a shot blasted past Mali goalkeeper Fatoumata Karentao for the early opener. On a breakout run from a stray Mali pass Seoposenwe earned a a free-kick on the left edge of the area as she was fouled by Kani Konté. Jane's first attempt from the set piece forced a stop from Karentao but Moroccan referee Bouchra Karboubi ordered a retake, apparently for the wall encroaching. Jane's second was hit powerfully, going in off the attempted block of the Mali keeper. Banyana continued to apply pressure back from the change rooms. Just past the hour defender Karabo Dhlamini, one one of her runs up the right flank, produced the pass for Seoposenwe to run onto, the attacker, having been the provider twice, providing the low finish.

The defending champions came out with intent, wasting no time in stamping their authority on the match. Veteran full-back Lebogang Ramalepe, returning to the starting line-up, opened the scoring inside five minutes, curling a superb effort into the top corner after a clever pass from Jermaine Seoposenwe. Mali attempted a response, but South Africa — far more composed and organised than in their earlier draw against Tanzania — never lost control. Refiloe Jane, another of the returning starters, doubled the lead in the 36th minute with a venomous free kick that left goalkeeper Fatoumata Karentao rooted. With a quarterfinal place already secured before kick-off, coach Desiree Ellis made multiple changes at half-time — withdrawing Jane, Seoposenwe and Amogelang Motau for Regina Mogolola, Sibulele Holweni and Gabriel Salgado. But the substitutions did little to blunt South Africa's momentum. The third goal came midway through the second half when Hildah Magaia, making her first real mark on this year's tournament, latched onto a through ball from Karabo Dhlamini and rifled it home — a finish that underscored the gulf in class. There was still time for a special moment from 20-year-old Ronnel Donnelly, who bagged her first-ever Banyana goal in just her third appearance, finishing smartly in the 79th minute to complete the rout. South Africa dominated possession, carved open Mali's defence at will, and maintained discipline at the back — with Andile Dlamini only rarely tested in goal. The result means Banyana completed the group stage unbeaten, and extended their remarkable WAFCON record under Ellis to 14 matches without defeat, dating back to the 2018 edition. It was a statement performance from a team that now appears to be hitting its stride — just in time for the knockout rounds. AC Milan confirm Modric arrival
MILAN - Croatia captain Luka Modric has signed a one-year deal with AC Milan at the age of 39, the Italian club said on Monday. Last week, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner would head to the San Siro from Real Madrid after the Club World Cup. Modric, who turns 40 in September, joined Madrid from Tottenham in 2012 and had been linked with a move to Italy since early June, after announcing he would leave the Spanish giants at the end of his contract. "AC Milan are delighted to announce Luka Modric has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2026 with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027," the 19-time Serie A winners said. Modric was in Milan earlier on Monday to undergo medical tests but according to Italian media will only start training with his team-mates in August. "I'm very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career," Modric said in a video on the club's social media platforms. "A big hug to everyone," he added. Allegri is back at the helm at Milan having led them to the Serie A title in 2011 during his first spell in charge between 2010 and 2014.
