Chelsea handed massive fine over spending breaches – and more could follow

Telegrapha day ago
Villa, who returned to the Champions League last season after more than 40 years away from European football's top competition, were fined €5 million immediately with the possibility of another €15 million over the next three years.
Telegraph Sport reported this week that Villa owners V Sports will sell a stake in its women's team to an external investor and the rest within the group, generating a profit of around £55 million. The club is also looking at the sale of the new live indoor venue at Villa Park, The Warehouse, which is as yet unfinished.
In addition, Chelsea and Aston Villa have both fallen on the wrong side of Uefa's new financial control system, the squad cost rules (SCR) which dictate no more than 80 per cent of revenue can be spent on wages and additional costs such as agents' fees. In Chelsea's case that has resulted in an €11 million fine, and for Villa €6 million.
Premier League financial controls do not forbid clubs from selling assets within the ownership group, and nor have the 20 clubs taken steps to rule out player swaps. As a consequence both clubs will pass the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR). At the Premier League AGM last month, there was so little support for a change to PSR that clubs did not even progress to vote on the issue.
Also hit hard were Barcelona, fined €60 million with €45 million of that suspended over two years for declaring non-admissible income. The troubled French club Lyon, at which US investor John Textor has recently stepped down from the board, was fined €12.5 million with a further €37.5 million suspended over four years. Lyon still face the prospect of relegation to Ligue 2 by French regulators.
Villa wish to avoid a mass exodus of stars and plan one 'big' sale, with the future of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez still uncertain. Leon Bailey, Emiliano Buendia, Leander Dendoncker and Louie Barry will be more obvious sales this summer.

Thelo Aasgaard to Rangers transfer leaves Luton boss 'disappointed' as quickfire exit forces tough admission

The Norway international has been snapped up by Gers just less than six months after arriving at Kenilworth Road Luton town boss Matt Bloomfield admits he is bittersweet after losing star man Thelo Aaasgaard to Rangers. The Liverpool-born midfielder only arrived at Kennilworth Road from Wigan Athletic back in January but made an impressive impact in the second half of the season, despite his side's relegation to EFL League One. ‌ Those performances also saw Aasgaard win international recognition at senior level with Norway - who he was eligble to play for through his father's side of the family and marked his first cap with a goal in 5-0 hammering of Moldova back in March. ‌ The 23-year-old is on the move again after being snapped up by Russell Martin and Rangers, signing a four-year-deal at Ibrox with the Light Blues paying Luton £3.5million for his services. And while he is chuffed for the player, Bloomfield can't help but feel disappointed about the playmaker's all-too-brief stay in north-west London. Speaking after their friendly victory against Boreham Wood on Saturday, he said: "I think it's a bit bittersweet for us. We are obviously disappointed to see Thelo go, of course we are. "But it's also a proud moment as a football club to take a boy from League One in January and within six months he has made his international debut where he scored and he has now got a transfer to an incredible football club who will be playing in the Champions League qualifiers. ‌ "We are obviously proud of what he has gone onto achieve in the short time he was with us but we are disappointed he has left. "I think ultimately it was inevitable it was going to happen with the amount of interest in him and his international manager's desire for him to move on as well. "It certainly didn't help but we understand the situation and have to focus on our future now." ‌ Aasgaard - who will be line to make his Rangers debut later this month in the crunch Champions League second round qualifier against Panathinaikos - revealed he couldn't make his mind up any quicker when he learned of the interest. He told the club's website: 'I am delighted to be here. I have been waiting for it, but I am glad to get it over the line. 'When I heard about Rangers I was over the moon. I have played against the manager's teams a few times and I always pictured myself in his team and to be here now is really good. ‌ 'It was an easy decision, I love the number of games here, it is like the EFL and I love playing. The stature and history is enough as well." Mets signing Italian teenager in franchise first

July 5 - The New York Mets are signing Italian pitcher Matteo Marelli, the first European amateur signing in team history. The 19-year-old right-hander was scheduled to have a signing ceremony on Saturday in Rovigo, Italy. "What I'm most proud about is the Mets are expanding their global footprint," Mets scout Rosario Chiovaro said, per the team's website. "I want the Mets to be a global brand." Chiovaro began scouting Marelli two years ago in Major League Baseball's European Development Tournament in London. When he saw Marelli again three months ago in the same tournament in Barcelona, his fastball had risen from the mid-80s to the mid-90s. The fastball is one of five distinct pitches in Marelli's arsenal, including a "kick change" he perfected by studying clips on social media. "It's easy to see when somebody's different from other people, from other players," said Francisco Cervelli, a longtime big-league catcher and current head coach of Italy's national teams, including Marelli's U-23 squad. "You see a future. It's a very interesting player. And the arm ... (Once he starts) training every day, you're going to see results very quickly." --Field Level Media
