Mankani festival begins in Krishnagiri
Inaugurating the festival, Minister for food and Civil Supplies R. Sakkarapani said the State government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was tuned into the needs of the farmers and the various schemes for farmers welfare was an outcome of informed deliberations.
The district has over 1.02 ha of horticultural crops. This includes 40.070 ha of vegetables, 33,550 ha of fruits and 11.363 ha of flowers. Of these, over 32,147 ha of the horticultural area is under mango cultivation in the district. This entails a production of 2.60 mt of mangoes, of which 1.20 lakh mt is given to pulp industry.
The Mankani festival will be a month-long affair with over a line-up of stalls by the Horticulture Department along with the various informative stalls on government schemes set up by the Department of Information and Publicity. An exclusive recreational arena has been set up for the public and children as part of the festival.
The week has seen political parties expressing solidarity with the mango growers, whilst demanding compensation for the poor prices. Mango farmers, faced with prices as low as ₹3.50 to ₹5 per kg are demanding the government to step in and urged pulp industry to procure mangoes at higher prices. While a section of the farmers also call for support price on the lines of Andhra Pradesh government, where a support price of ₹4 per kg was announced to be given along with ₹8 per kg procured by the pulp industry. In view of the ongoing festival, traffic diversions have been made.

Stalin said on Friday that the Special Intensive Revision in Bihar was being misused to quietly erase voters of disadvantaged and dissenting communities, tilting the balance in favour of the BJP. 'This is not about reform. It is about engineering outcomes.' Mr. Stalin, who has been hospitalised since July 21 and underwent angiogram, said, 'What happened in Bihar says it all: the Delhi regime knows the same electorate that once voted for it will now vote it out. That is why it is trying to stop them from voting altogether.' The DMK has been part of the protests in New Delhi against the Special Intensive Revision. 'If you cannot defeat us, you seek to delete us. Don't play with fire. Any threat to our democracy will be met with firm resistance,' he said. Mr. Stalin further said: 'Tamil Nadu will raise its voice with full force. We will fight this injustice with every democratic weapon at our disposal.' Minorities Commission reviews projects, receives petitions in Madurai
As per Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's direction to distribute two acres of land to people of minority communities in each district, the District Collectors were in the process of identifying vacant government lands and allocating them to beneficiaries, said State Minorities Commission Chairman S.J. Joe Arun. He reviewed the progress of various projects being carried out by the district administration and received petitions from the public. During a press meet, he said a majority of the grievances were regarding recognition of religious lands and buildings in educational institutions run by minorities. Also, a demand for land allocation for cemeteries and kabristans was raised. The demand had already been submitted to the government, and it was being reviewed, he added. Mr. Arun said the commission was mandated to protecting the rights of religious and linguistic minorities. It was reviewing whether the welfare assistance stipulated under the Constitution reached the minorities. Stating that the commission had so far conducted reviews in 25 districts, including Madurai, he said it would give recommendations to the State government for protecting the minorities and improving their livelihood based on the demands raised by the people. Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar was present.
