Relieved Carpenter relishes making long-awaited England debut in USA

Joe Carpenter joked he feared his England debut was never going to happen after a chaotic night of delays and disruption in Washington DC.
The Leeds-born star, 23, made his international bow as part of Steve Borthwick's team that beat the USA 40-5 in Washington DC on Saturday night to round off a summer clean sweep of victories after an impressive 2-0 win in Argentina.
But the match in the American capital kicked off an hour later than planned due to a lightning strike in the area, with the game then halted by a further half an hour on 29 minutes when another struck within 10 miles of the ground when England were 14-0 up.
The disruption followed several similar incidents at the recent Club World Cup in the US, with champions Chelsea's clash against Benfica delayed by nearly two hours after the Portuguese giants endured an even longer disruption against Auckland City.
Sale Sharks full-back Carpenter, watched on by dad Will, mum Jackie, partner Federica and brother Josh at Audi Field, was one of six players to be handed their debuts alongside fellow starters Max Ojomoh and Arthur Clark.
And asked about how the delays affected him, he said: 'Most of us getting new caps were just hoping the game was going to start, to be honest!
'Thankfully the weather held out eventually – there are a lot of happy boys in there and it's been a really special tour.
'It's probably not one the lads expected – it was probably the longest game of rugby a lot of the boys have had.
'But to go out there and get the win makes it very special.
'We've got a lot of strong leaders in there who led the way, kept us composed and got us chilled out and fired up at the right time.
'Mentally it's quite tough when you're about to start a game, then come off again.
'But I thought the boys handled it really well – to get three wins out of three is a great way to do it.
'The connections boys have made is massive and there are lots of happy faces in the dressing room right now.
'It was definitely special [to have my family here] – they're the reason I'm here. They've supported me throughout as a young one and as a professional.
'For them to be here for my first one is massively important to me.'
Curtis Langdon, Luke Northmore, Cadan Murley, Jack van Poortvliet, Harry Randall and debutant Gabriel Oghre all scored to make it three transatlantic wins from three and extend England's winning run to seven matches – their longest streak since back in 2020.
Carpenter nearly got on the scoresheet himself only for his dream debut try to be denied after a narrowly-adjudged Murley knock-on.
USA grabbed a late consolation through Shilo Klein to give the home fans who remained something to cheer about but England's work was done as they ended their triumphant tour in style.
England will now enjoy their summer break before gearing up for crunch autumn internationals against the likes of Australia and New Zealand at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
And Carpenter, who delivered a rock-solid display on debut, is desperate to be involved.
'That's definitely a goal of mine,' he added.
'Whether it happens or not I don't know – I've got to go back and perform for Sale now.
'We'll definitely enjoy the break and hopefully when autumn comes round I'm still performing and can get a few more caps.'

Lionel Messi reaction to MLS suspension revealed

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas has revealed that Lionel Messi is 'extremely upset' over his Major League Soccer suspension for missing the 2025 MLS All-Star Game. Messi and his Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba were both voted into the All-Star Game but did not take part in any of the events in Austin, Texas this week. The former Barcelona duo did not show for the All-Star skills challenge on Tuesday evening and were missing from the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday where they would have played against an equivalent select squad from Mexico's LigaMX. MLS rules state that players who miss the All-Star Game without approval from the league are subject to a suspension. On Friday, MLS confirmed that Messi and Alba will serve a one-game ban and are 'unavailable' for Inter Miami's league match against Cincinnati on Saturday night. 'The reaction was as expected, obviously it was not a positive reaction, they want to compete, they want to play games, that's what they're here for – to play and win,' Mas said on Friday. 'They understand the magnitude of tomorrow night's game, so the reaction was exactly as expected out of two competitive players who don't understand the decision, who don't understand why not attending an exhibition match leads directly to a suspension, the rule is what it is, they don't understand it. 'I don't agree with the rule, I have made my thoughts know to the commissioner very plainly. I think it is going to change but that's neither here nor there, but their reaction was as I expected, they were extremely upset both of them. Asked if the decision could impact Messi's future at Inter Miami, Mas replied: 'He's very upset, he's extremely upset, as expected. I'm hopeful it doesn't have an impact long term. More Trending 'Will it have an impact initially in the player's perception on how the league rules work? Absolutely, no doubt.' MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement: 'I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player – or anyone – who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. 'I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. 'Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision. That said, we're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward. I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve.' Cadillac have chosen the two F1 stars they want to sign for 2026

Team principal Graeme Lowdon is said to have settled on the two Formula 1 drivers he wants to sign for Cadillac ahead of their debut season in the sport next year Formula 1 newbies Cadillac are said to have decided which drivers they want to lead their charge on track in their debut season. The American outfit will become the sport's 11th team when it debuts next March at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. ‌ With just one year to get everything in place, team principal Graeme Lowdon has plenty on his plate from hiring staff to setting up manufacturing processes and designing their first ever F1 car. Plus, of course, he must hire two drivers to get behind the wheel of those machines next season. ‌ During a recent podcast appearance, Lowdon offered seven names as he shed some light on the decision process. Mick Schumacher, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, Felipe Drugovich, Frederik Vesti, Arvid Lindblad and Colton Herta were the drivers he mentioned as he discussed Cadillac's options. ‌ And it appears he has narrowed down his options further by choosing his two preferred driver options. Lowdon told Mirror Sport earlier this month that he would prefer "experienced" options and he seems to have stuck to that. Speaking on F1 TV ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, correspondent Lawrence Barretto was speaking about the situation of Bottas who is a man in demand. Back at Mercedes as a reserve this year after losing his Sauber race seat, the Finn is wanted by Alpine but also seems to be a leading candidate for Cadillac. "The more likely landing spot for him is Cadillac," said Barretto, who also revealed the name of the other driver in pole position for a seat. "I hear that they haven't got any contracts done, not even any ahead of terms, but Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas are the two drivers that they want at that team. "It's just a case of them going through the motions with it. It might be some time until we find that out. Obviously, there is still some time for that to change, but that's where we're looking I think. ‌ "That's where I think it's going, which makes sense because Valtteri could maybe use the Alpine interest to maybe get a better deal. They want experience, and those two drivers offer that in bags." Both drivers are multi-race winners throughout their long F1 careers. Bottas won 10 races over five seasons as team-mate to Lewis Hamilton during his first spell with Mercedes, while Perez is a six-time race winner himself, five with Red Bull after his maiden success while still at Racing Point. Should Cadillac end up contracting those two racers, it will be a tough pill to swallow for Zhou Guanyu. The Chinese racer, now reserve at Ferrari, is also looking for a way back onto the grid and may have been expecting to be a front-runner, given Lowdon was previously a member of his management team.

Premier League heavyweights in £1bn spending frenzy as rivals left behind

Chelsea are on course to become the second Premier League club to take their summer spending commitments towards £300m as last season's top four threaten to pull away from the chasing pack. With almost six weeks of the transfer window remaining, the top four clubs may well commit to deals worth a combined £1bn by the end of it. That is in stark contrast to last season's fifth and sixth-placed clubs, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, who have not yet spent £100m between them. Forward Xavi Simons and defender Jorrel Hato are the latest players Chelsea are making progress on, having already signed Liam Delap, João Pedro and Jamie Gittens and completed deals that were set up for this summer such as the captures of Dário Essugo, Willian Estêvão and Mamadou Sarr. Chelsea will offset their spending by making over £200m in sales, with Christopher Nkunku the latest example of the kind of interest their fringe players can generate. Bayern Munich, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and clubs in Italy have all registered an interest in Nkunku, while Villa are yet to receive a single realistic offer for one of their star players, Emiliano Martínez. A deal for RB Leipzig star Simons, who wants to join Chelsea and is valued at around £60m, is dependent on at least one sale being agreed but that should not be an issue with Nkunku now a wanted man, João Félix a target of Benfica and others, and the possibility of offers for Nicolas Jackson. Carney Chukwuemeka is one of at least three players Leipzig have asked about signing and the midfielder also has interest from the Premier League, with Chelsea wanting to sell him permanently rather than agreeing to another loan move to Borussia Dortmund. Sources are confident Chelsea can strike a deal to sign Simons, but they also retain interest in Alejandro Garnacho and Morgan Rogers. Chelsea's interest in Ajax defender Hato, who can play as a left-sided central defender or as a left-back, has been well documented and space would be made for his arrival with at least one defensive sale. Renato Veiga has been the subject of an approach from Atletico Madrid. Telegraph Sport reported this week that Liverpool have agreed to commit to almost £300m in transfer fees with the capture of Hugo Ekitike and they remain interested in Marc Guéhi, while Arsenal want to advance towards £200m by signing Viktor Gyokeres and may yet bid for Eberechi Eze. Manchester City could surpass £150m by nicking goalkeeper James Trafford from under the noses of Newcastle. The speed and power with which last season's top four clubs have moved is already prompting insider predictions that they will not be dislodged in the forthcoming season. One boardroom source told Telegraph Sport: 'The top four are pulling away. Look at what they are doing in comparison to the rest of the League.' Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are trying to keep up and prove that talk of the days of the traditional big six being over were premature, but they have a lot of ground to make up on Liverpool, Arsenal, City and Chelsea. According to figures taken from Transfermarkt, United have committed to deals worth £133m so far this summer and may well go higher if they can land a new striker. Spurs have spent £122m and hope to get to at least £181m by adding Morgan Gibbs-White. How much more business United and Tottenham can do is likely to depend on sales or further investment, but both clubs have signalled their intent to try to get back into the top six. Newcastle, Villa, Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion have broken into the top four and competed to break up the so-called traditional big six over recent years, but they are falling behind in the transfer window. Telegraph Sport this week documented Newcastle's difficulties after missing out on a host of top targets to rivals, while Villa's plans have been held up by an inability to sell the necessary players to generate funds and make space on the club's wage bill. It has been noticeable that while Chelsea have been able to find buyers for the likes of Veiga, Noni Madueke and Djordje Petrovic, Villa have not yet had realistic bids for star players such as Martínez, Ollie Watkins and Jacob Ramsey which could be key to unlocking their transfer window. Forest have lost Anthony Elanga to Newcastle and are battling Tottenham over Gibbs-White. They are one of a host of clubs to have registered an interest in Nkunku, but face serious competition for the former Leipzig star. Ben Doak and Dan Ndoye are two other targets, while there has also been interest in Ramsey. Villa are believed to have held discussions over offering a new contract to Ramsey, but a sale cannot be discounted just yet. Newcastle, Villa and Forest will all be hopeful of finishing the transfer window in good shape, but Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and City have already started on their dash to break clear.
