Richard Keys rips into Mikel Arteta again after Pedro Porro incident in Arsenal defeat to Tottenham
Richard Keys has once again vented his frustrations with Mikel Arteta, after the Arsenal boss was pushed aside by Pedro Porro during the Gunners' pre-season clash with Tottenham Hotspur. While the north London bragging rights ultimately went to fans of the Lilywhites, who emerged 1-0 winners thanks to Pape Matar Sarr's audacious 45th-minute strike from the halfway line, the scoreline wasn't the only talking point.
That's because tensions between right-back Porro and Arteta bubbled over midway into the second half. The 25-year-old was seen brushing his compatriot out of the way as he prepared to take a throw in.
Given that Arteta was obstructing his path and outside of his managerial zone, Porro then gestured towards the markings on the pitch, showing the Gunners boss he had overstepped his area. The fourth official got in between them to diffuse the situation, and Porro's act was one Keys later threw his support behind on social media, with the presenter being a long-time critic of Arteta's touchline behaviour.
Taking to X, Keys wrote: "Well done Pedro Porro. For how long have I been on Arteta's case? If his team is prepared properly & he trusts them there's no need for the nonsense on the touch line. Stay in your box man."
While the replies on Keys' take were a mixed bag, some agreeing with his stance while others criticising him for singling out Arteta when other managers have been guilty of stepping out of their boxes, it's not the first time that Keys has been vocal about the manager as of late.
During Arsenal's September 2022 clash with Manchester United, Keys took to social media to lambast him for being on the verge of the touchline, while sharing a photo of the manager almost gracing the pitch. Alongside the snap, he wrote: "Why is Arteta allowed to spend the game on the touch line? Again today – in front of the 4th official as well. Does he has special dispensation?"
Just two months later, Keys was actively criticising Arteta's presence on the sidelines once again, even tagging The FA's Professional Game Match Officials Limited in his post to do something about the boss' behaviour during a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
On that occasion, he wrote: "Why is this allowed every week @FA_PGMOL? Arteta has been jumping up & down all game – way outside his technical area. [Graham] Potter is in his & 4th is watching. Do something about this man."
It's not just Arteta's actions from the dugout that has seemingly boiled the blood of Keys over the years, however, with the long-time pundit branding him "delusional" for his comments on Arsenal following their Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of PSG in May.
Arsenal needed to overcome a 1-0 deficit when they headed to the Parc des Princes to fight for their place in the final of the competition, with Ousmane Dembele giving Les Parisiens the edge in the first leg. Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi had other plans on the night however, with Bukayo Saka's strike coming as a meer consolation prize for the Gunners who suffered a 2-1 loss away from home, and a 3-1 loss on aggregate.
Arteta felt incredibly hard done-by through his side's exit from the Champions League, claiming they did not deserve to lose their semi-final. However, Keys was quick to take issue with the manager's comments, taking to X to write: "One of Arteta's many problems is he's delusional.
"Arsenal haven't been good enough all season. They won't be again until he accepts that. They had spells in both games v Paris but that's not enough. The best teams are in the final."
Despite losing to Spurs, Arsenal's pre-season preparations have been positive on the whole. The north London outfit secured a 1-0 win over AC Milan earlier this month in their opening game of the tour, before handing Newcastle United a 3-2 loss days later. They are now set to return to British soil to take on Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium come Wednesday, before facing off with Athletic Club in the Emirates Cup three days later.
Arsenal's Premier League opener is on Sunday, August 17, as they travel to Old Trafford to take on long-time rivals Manchester United.

Aston Villa star John McGinn launches scathing attack on 'unfair' Premier League rules
Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has hit out at the Premier League's spending rules, which he feels are unfairly holding the club back and giving the 'big six' an advantage John McGinn has criticised the Premier League's spending rules, arguing that they are hindering Aston Villa and giving the 'big six' an unfair advantage. This summer, the club's owners, V Sports, have been unable to splash out to strengthen Unai Emery's squad in a bid to secure another Champions League finish. Villa have two routes to UEFA's elite club competition next season: through their league position and the Europa League, which they qualified for after finishing sixth last term. Villa have only brought in two players this summer - one of whom could be loaned out: Zepiqueno Redmond, who joined on a free transfer at the start of last month. Goalkeeper Marco Bizot has been the only other addition, coming from Stade Brest to replace Robin Olsen. As a result of being in Europe, Villa must also comply with UEFA's squad cost rules this summer, which restrict spending on wages relative to a club's revenue. Villa narrowly missed out on a return to the Champions League on the final day of last season after a 2–0 defeat to Manchester United, but the result was tainted by a mistake from referee Thomas Bramall. He blew his whistle when Morgan Rogers won the ball from Altay Bayindir before putting it in the back of the net, meaning VAR couldn't overturn the decision. At that point in the match, Villa were already in the top five because Newcastle were losing to Everton, so even a draw would have been enough to cross the line. "There will be a tinge of jealousy watching the Champions League this year, but our aim is to go as far as we possibly can in the Europe League, try to get back into the Champions League, which helps the club not only for next season and for many years moving forward," McGinn told Birmingham Live exclusively. "We have seen the impact it has now. I don't know any details about that, but you don't have to be clever to realise that if you want to compete with the big boys, there are rules which are pretty much unfair if you ask me. "We have got owners who want to invest in the team and want to spend to kick the club on, but they are not allowed to do it. It's tough to see. The rules are similar for a lot of the clubs." Despite his dislike of the rules, McGinn feels they could unite Villa this season. "I think it [being at a disadvantage] unites everyone, the manager and the players," he said. "It's the same for every supporter that they want a new toy. When you've not got them in the summer, you think, 'oh, where are they'. But then you realise that we are actually alright here. "We just signed Bouba [Kamara] on a new long-term contract, and he is one of the best midfielders in Europe. We have held onto some big players. It's not all doom and gloom. We are positive going into the new season and make it a special one. "Ever since the manager has come in, we have achieved something which we haven't done before. He is as motivated as us to do the same." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Oliver Antman to Rangers transfer details emerge as fee and contract for Go Ahead Eagles man 'revealed'
Russell Martin is closing in on his latest signing with the wide man set to join the Ibrox ranks. The contract offer on the table to Oliver Antman at Rangers has been revealed, according to one report. Russell Martin is desperate to add strength to his wide areas and the Rangers Review report that he is about to get his wish with a fee also thrashed out with Go Ahead Eagles. The state that the Ibrox side will shell out an initial £3million payment and that deal could rise by a further million if all add-on clauses are hit in the coming seasons. They claim a four year deal is on the table for the 23-year-old with an option of a further season that would keep Antman tied to the club until 2030. It's been a busy summer to date for Rangers and more activity is expected in the coming weeks both in and out before the transfer window slams shut. Djeidi Gassama - who grabbed the Champions League headlines in both games with Panathinaikos - and Mikey Moore have both arrived recently with Antman joining the winger ranks in Govan. Boss Martin was denied a winning start to the Premiership campaign with the performance and result against Motherwell leaving him raging as he ripped into his team in an astonishing TV blast. Skipper James Tavernier scored the opener with a first half header but that was cancelled out with just minutes to go as Rangers were once again denied on the opening day. Focus now turns to Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League as the Light Blues bid to overcome hurdle two of three in their quest to reach the big time and bag the £40million bonus that comes with qualifying for the competition proper. Ahead of that clash, they look set to be boosted by the arrival of Antman.
