
Etihad Airways reports record results Of AED 685 mln and highest customer satisfaction scores for Q1 2025
Customer satisfaction at all-time high, growing 20 per cent year-on-year, driven by enhancements across airport, onboard and digital experience
Abu Dhabi – UAE. Etihad Airways has delivered record-breaking financial performance and highest-ever customer satisfaction performance in the first quarter of 2025, building on last year's momentum with further notable improvements across revenue, operational efficiency, and fleet expansion.
Profit after tax reached AED 685 million (U.S.$ 187 million), marking a 30 per cent increase year-on-year, driven by robust passenger demand and operational efficiencies. Total revenue saw a 15 per cent rise compared to Q1 2024, supported by both passenger and cargo business.
Etihad continues to lead the region in passenger growth, carrying 5.0 million guests in Q1 2025 – a 16 per cent year-on-year increase – and maintaining strong momentum into Q2. With nearly 20 million passengers carried over the last 12 months, Etihad is the fastest-growing airline in the region.
Customer satisfaction reached a record high in Q1 2025, with scores improving by 20 per cent year-on-year. Gains were recorded across key touchpoints, including check-in, boarding, inflight service, food and beverage, Wi-Fi, and the updated website and mobile app. The quarter also saw the launch of new lounge and inflight menus, alongside upgraded service standards.
The fleet continued to expand to support the guest experience. One additional A380 returned to service during the quarter, offering First Apartments and The Residence. In April, Etihad took delivery of another A350-1000, with another Boeing 787 Dreamliner to follow. These new aircraft feature ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi and updated inflight entertainment systems.
Etihad also advanced its premium offering, expanding First Class to more routes and preparing new ground and inflight services for rollout from August. In April, the airline introduced its new A321LR cabin, becoming the first in the region to offer First Class on a single-aisle aircraft. The cabin features exclusive private First suites and lie-flat Business seats, bringing widebody comfort to medium-haul routes. The broader First class experience will include a new concierge service, private chauffeur transfers, dedicated check-in, meet-and-assist service, and baggage-free travel options in Abu Dhabi.

Passenger revenue grew by 16 per cent reaching AED 5.5 billion (U.S.$ 1.5 billion), driven by increased capacity, continued network expansion and increased flight frequencies.
Passenger growth was boosted by a 14 per cent rise year-on-year in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) and an improved passenger load factor of 87 per cent (+1 pp year-on-year). Fleet expansion accelerated, with 98 aircraft in operation by the end of the quarter, including the reintroduction of Etihad's sixth A380. The operating fleet further grew in the month of April with the delivery of an additional A350-1000.
Etihad operated 80 destinations as of March 2025, with 16 new routes launching this year to support continued growth and broaden access to key global markets.
Improved cargo yield led to cargo revenue growth of 8 per cent year-on-year, despite a 4 per cent reduction in volumes.
The strong operational performance is reflected in the EBITDA, which rose by 32 per cent year-on-year, reaching AED 1.4 billion (U.S.$ 379 million), boosting the EBITDA margin to 21 per cent (+3 pp compared to the same period of 2024).
Further strengthening financial resilience, net leverage improved to 1.1x, down from 1.9x in March 2024, driven by scheduled debt repayments and strong cash generation. Cash flow from operations reached AED 1.8 billion (U.S.$ 500 million), reflecting an 11 per cent increase year-on-year.

UAE pilots new waste scheme to reduce amount of phones and laptops in landfills
Mobile phone and laptop owners in the UAE will soon be able to get money when they hand their devices in for recycling rather than throwing them away. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has launched a pilot project with Tadweer Group that will see manufacturers and producers of electronic devices having to pay an additional fee to make them more accountable for how a phone is disposed of. It is expected this fee will be passed on to consumers. The good news for them, however, is the cost will be refunded if they hand in their device for recycling at one of the designated centres taking part in the scheme launched today. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr Amna Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, described the agreement as a step towards 'sustainable environmental solutions' that will ensure "the safe, long-term disposal of waste, and protects the right of future generations to live in a clean, pollution-free environment." The initiative is part of the UAE's Integrated Waste Management Agenda 2023–2026 and targets specific waste streams, including electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and packaging. If successful, the scheme could lay the groundwork for a nationwide transition to a circular economy – one in which products are reused, repaired, and recycled instead of discarded. Sara Jackson, secretary general of the Circular Packaging Association, said that if implemented successfully this could be a leading model for the Middle East. "We know from a study that was done in 2021 that around 15 per cent of UAE households actually practice recycling," explained Ms Jackson. "So there is a significant opportunity in terms of consumer awareness and education." "We'll start small, but it will gather momentum in order to reach the kinds of targets that we see in Europe, where 90 per cent of some materials are actually diverted from landfill and reused in the circular economy." Global waste is projected to reach 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050, growing more than twice as fast as the global population. Recycling rates and infrastructure gaps Much of the waste generated across the UAE currently ends up in landfill but authorities in Abu Dhabi have been increasing efforts to tackle waste over the past few years. Abu Dhabi-based waste management and recycling services company Tadweer previously said it was aiming to divert 80 per cent of waste from landfills by 2030. Thursday's signing of an agreement on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) between MOCCAE and Tadweer – the Abu Dhabi-based waste management giant – commits both parties to temporarily operate the pilot in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Its central aim is to test the viability of a system where producers are obliged to take some responsibility for what happens to their products when a consumer is finished with it. Ali Al Dhaheri, chief executive of the Tadweer Group, said the pilot marks a shift away from linear waste models in which responsibility ends at the point of sale. 'By piloting an EPR model, we are laying the foundation for a more accountable and resource-efficient waste management system," he said. 'We will explore invaluable learning that will inform future strategies focused on EPR, ensuring a seamless transition to a model that benefits the environment, businesses, and our community.' EPR is widely considered an essential component of sustainable waste management. Under the model, companies are required to finance the collection, recycling, or safe disposal of the waste generated by their products. Countries such as the UK, Germany, and South Korea have implemented EPR for various product categories, resulting in improved recycling rates and reduced environmental harm. While the fee on products will be finalised at the end of the six-month pilot, Mr Al Dhaheri told The National it will be similar to others implemented globally.

Etihad Airways launches direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Atlanta, its fifth US destination
Etihad Airways 's first direct flight from Abu Dhabi to Atlanta has taken off, making the US city the airline's fifth destination from Abu Dhabi. Flight EY13 took off from Zayed International Airport at 9.20am local time on Thursday, landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 4.20pm local time. The flight is serviced by Etihad's Airbus A350-1000, a fuel-efficient, environmentally advanced aircraft offering a quieter ride. There are 327 economy seats, each with 13-inch touch screens and bluetooth headset pairing. Each of the 44 business class seats feature a sliding door for suite-like privacy, 18.5-inch TV screens, noise-cancelling headphones and seats that convert into a fully flat bed of 79 inches in length. The Atlanta route will initially be served four times a week – on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays – with daily flights set to be launched by November, Etihad said. 'Atlanta is a dynamic city with deep cultural, economic and aviation significance,' said Etihad Airways chief executive Antonoaldo Neves. 'This new service enhances access to the southeastern United States while offering seamless connections across the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Asia. 'With US pre-clearance at Zayed International Airport, guests can enjoy the convenience of arriving in Atlanta as domestic travellers.' Zayed International Airport is the only airport in the Middle East that offers pre-clearance facilities to travellers flying to the US. These allow travellers to enter the US as domestic passengers, having cleared international immigration before leaving the UAE. Atlanta is Etihad's fifth US destination, joining New York City, Chicago, Washington DC and Boston. The Atlanta route is the first of 10 new direct rotes announced in November last year. Other destinations are in Asia and Africa. Flights to Taipei in northern Taiwan will start in September, followed by new routes to Medan, Phnom Penh and Krabi in October and Tunis, Chiang Mai, Hong Kong, Hanoi and Algiers in November. Tickets for each destination are already on sale.

Love listening to a good tune when driving? When you drive over rumble strips on Sheikh Khalifa Street, you can be a part of creating music with your car as the instrument. Installed just before the Fujairah Police Headquarters, the nearly 1km-long musical street has people changing over to the last lane just for the experience. However, it is essential to keep safety in mind and avoid haphazardly switching lanes. Here's a Khaleej Times guide — yes, we went over to check it out ourselves — with tips to help you get the best musical experience on the road. 2. Half-Desert Road in Dubai With UAE being a desert country, it is no surprise that a drive through the country will take you on many a road with sand dunes on both sides. On this particular road, however, you do not go to the desert — the desert comes to you. Half Desert in Dubai, as the name suggests, is a place where the wind often carries sand from the nearby dunes to the road. Cars going through this area will find some of their journey on the asphalt, and some on sand. The road partly covered in desert sand makes for a stunning view (see image above!), and is a popular getaway for tourists and residents alike, particularly in cooler conditions. 3. Khor Fakkan Tunnels Have you ever been under a mountain? How about under five consecutive ones? In the UAE, the latter is not just possible — it makes for a pretty neat drive. The five tunnels are located on the Sharjah-Khor Fakkan road and cut through the imposing peaks — with hills on your left and right, but also above you. This includes the 2.7km Al Sidra tunnel which is also the longest covered tunnel in the Middle East. The four other tunnels are Al Saqab at 1.4km, Al Raugh at 1.3km, Al Ghazeer at 0.9km, and Al Sahah at 0.3km. 4. Al Shindagha Tunnel Now that we've been in a tunnel under the mountains, there's another that goes underwater. And no, you do not have to don your scuba gear for this one. What is particularly fascinating about the Al Shindagha tunnel is this engineering marvel, going under Dubai Creek, was opened as early as 1975, making it the oldest tunnel in the Emirates. You can still get a feel for the 'olden days' as you pass this two-lane tunnel with its jet fans humming along. The area boasts not just an underwater tunnel for vehicles, it also has a underwater pedestrian walkway, which means you can walk under the creek, while still keeping your feet on land. 5. Wadi Al Qor Wadi Al Qor in Ras Al Khaimah is not your typical road — it offers off-road experiences. Visitors to this spot, often known as the "lost trail", have reported hearing a chorus of frogs all throughout their journey, giving it the name "Wadi of Frogs". Since it is not a city road like the others, this terrain is best suited for 4x4 vehicles due to the off-road paths. Unique about this spot is the trail follows a riverbed, with water being seen on the path, while it also cuts through mountains. When visiting such places, always be mindful of the risky terrain, and keep your safety at first priority. You must also be respectful of private property boundaries, such as farms owned by the local community. 6. Floating Bridge The Floating Bridge, as the name suggests, is a bridge built right on the water — and was shaped in the motion of waves, so drivers experienced a little 'wave action' as they drove by. It was the first of its kind in the region, and spans Dubai Creek. The bridge would open and close every day to allow for marine traffic to pass by. Here's an exclusive behind-the-scenes video that shows how it worked: This peculiar spot saw both cars and boats pass by, albeit at different times, making for an enthralling experience. The bridge rests on pontoons, which are hollow structures, that support it and allow the bridge to move along with the tide. The Floating Bridge is currently closed for maintenance, as announced by RTA in 2023. 7. Zero-Gravity Road? Travellers have reported experiencing a "magnetic" hill in the area of Masafi, Fujairah, where the car seemingly rolls upwards. While Khaleej Times was not able to independently confirm this, such roads do exist in other parts of the world and are often caused by optical illusions. These roads appear to be going uphill when, in reality, they are sloping downwards. You could check out Fujairah's Masafi area for yourself and see if those anti-gravity claims have any truth to them. Alternatively, such a road can be seen not too far away — in Oman, in the route between Mirbat and Salalah. The spot is fairly well-known and can be an awe-inspiring experience for many UAE residents, given the proximity of the place.
