India captain Shubman Gill hits back at Oval groundsman over pitch confrontation

India captain Shubman Gill hit back at The Oval's head groundsman Lee Fortis after an altercation on the field during practice ahead of their fifth Test against England. India head coach Gautam Gambhir clashed with Fortis over India's use of the square during their training session, after the groundsman was unhappy with Gambhir and Gill for getting up close to the wicket which was being prepared for the match that begins on Thursday. 'You stop it, you don't tell us what we need to do,' Gambhir said during the incident. 'You don't tell us what we need to do, OK? You don't tell any of my squad what we need to do. You have no right to tell us. You are just a groundsman. You stay in your capacity. You are just a groundsman, nothing beyond.' Fortis was later questioned about the altercation, hinting that tensions simply boiled over with the crucial fifth Test on the horizon. 'I don't want to say anything,' he told Indian media. 'There's quite a big game coming up, isn't there. It's not my job to be happy with him. I don't know the man, I've never met him before today. You saw what he was like this morning. There's nothing to speak about, there's nothing to hide here.' Speaking at The Oval on Wednesday, Gill said Fortis's interjection was 'absolutely unnecessary'. 'We have been here [in England] for almost two months and a coach has every right to have a look at the wicket. I don't understand why we couldn't look at the pitch closer than three metres. It's not something that has happened before. We've been playing cricket all around the world for many years and it's never happened. That's the job of the coach and the captain, so I don't see why he didn't allow us to do that.' England currently lead the series 2-1 going into the final Test match, but they will be without captain Ben Stokes after he withdrew with a shoulder injury. Stokes refused to be drawn on the latest incident in what has been a series coloured by animosity between the two camps. 'I don't know what happened,' Stokes said, before his press conference ended abruptly.

Luke Shaw says Man Utd have ‘no stragglers anymore' as he praises Ruben Amorim

Luke Shaw fully supports Ruben Amorim's demanding approach as the Manchester United head coach seeks to transform what the defender admits has at times been a 'toxic' environment. The 30-year-old is the longest-serving player at Old Trafford having joined from Southampton in 2014 for what was at the time a world-record fee for a teenager. Shaw has experienced plenty of down moments among the positives during his time at United, with Amorim the fifth different permanent manager the England international has worked under. The left-back said the whole squad needed to consider whether they were good enough to play for the club after May's Europa League final loss to Tottenham and feels standards have been raised in pre-season. 'It's not hard to see from the outside what it's been like,' Shaw told reporters on their US tour. 'A lot of the time I've been here over the last few years, it's been extremely negative. It can be quite toxic, the environment, it's not healthy at all. 'We need an environment that's healthy, that's positive, that's got good energy and happiness. 'I think when you have all those things, you feel free, and you express yourself more on the pitch.' Shaw says Amorim has the full backing of United's squad as the head coach demands 100 per cent in everything. 'His mentality, his demands – he's extremely tough on the group,' Shaw said. 'He leaves no stone unturned, and I think there's no stragglers in this group anymore. I think everyone has to put the team first. He's made that very clear. 'I think he's picking players on how he feels will be best for the team and that's his choice. 'Us as players, we're fully behind him and fully behind his ideas and what he wants to implement in this team. 'We feel like a real team, especially this pre-season. Since I've been back, the group is so together and that's something we need to keep, to make us more of a family and everyone all together and we're all driving in the same direction.' United finished 15th last season and are currently taking part in the Premier League Summer Series in America. Amorim's side beat West Ham 2-1 in New Jersey at the weekend and are taking on Bournemouth at Soldier Field in Chicago on Wednesday evening local time, before facing Everton in Atlanta on Sunday.

England captain Ben Stokes confident of Ashes fitness despite shoulder injury

England captain Ben Stokes insists he will be fit to lead his side's Ashes charge, despite being ruled out of the series decider against India with a serious shoulder injury. Stokes was seen clutching his right shoulder during the fourth innings of last week's draw at Old Trafford but still sent down 11 overs in clear discomfort. He was initially hopeful about lining up in Thursday's fifth Test at the Kia Oval, but scans revealed a grade three tear – the most severe category – meaning he now faces six to 10 weeks of rehabilitation. And while he will play nothing more than a cheerleading role in the final match a series where he has emerged as the key performer, the medical advice suggests he is confident of being back in time for what has been billed as a legacy-defining trip to Australia. The Ashes begins in Perth on November 21, with England flying out a fortnight earlier, and he was quick to assure fans he intended to be there. Stokes opted to take the captain's pre-match press conference in place of deputy Ollie Pope, who will lead the team on home turf with the side 2-1 ahead, and was asked directly if he expected to be ready. 'Yeah. It's six or seven weeks probably,' he said, taking an optimistic view of the prognosis. 'I'll start rehabbing now and obviously focus on what we've got coming up in the winter. It's a decent tear of one of the muscles I can't pronounce. I woke up the morning after the game and it was pretty sore so I wasn't surprised that the scan showed something. 'There was obviously a bit of emotion going in when you find out what you've done. I think you need time chatting with the medical team, Baz (head coach Brendon McCullum), and then it was just 20 minutes to myself out there in the morning, just to really be clear around the decision that we made. 'It is one of those where you're weighing up the risk-reward and the risk was way too high for damaging this any further than it currently is. I wouldn't expect to put any one of my players at risk with an injury like this. The series has taken a big toll.' Stokes knows the ropes better than most when it comes to arduous recovery periods. The 34-year-old underwent surgery on a longstanding knee issue in late 2023 and suffered two serious hamstring tears last year. He bounced back better than ever this summer, racking up 140 overs with the ball and facing almost 600 deliveries, but may have ultimately pushed himself beyond his body's capacity. Yet he has no regrets about taking such a punishing workload. 'Not at all. When I'm out on the field I play to win and give everything I possibly can,' he said. 'If I feel there's a moment in a game where I need to put everything I'm feeling aside, I'll do that because that's how much this team means to me, how much playing for England means to me, how much winning means to me. 'Being a professional sportsman, injuries are part of this game and I can't do anything about that.' Stokes' absence means a first Test appearance of the year for rising star Jacob Bethell, who turned heads in New Zealand in December but has been restricted to 12th man duties since. That is one of four changes to the England XI, with Liam Dawson standing down one match into his comeback and pace pair Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer rested. In come three fresh quicks, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton making their first appearances of the series at their Surrey home and Josh Tongue back after sitting out the last two games. 'We've got a team of 11 match winners. One person doesn't win you a game and just because I am playing or I'm not playing doesn't mean we're going to win or lose,' said Stokes. 'We've have seen people put in some pretty special individual performances and it's another opportunity for another 11 people to hopefully put their hand up and win a game for England.'
