Giroud to leave Los Angeles FC
Los Angeles, June 28 (UNI) French striker Olivier Giroud said Friday that he had reached an agreement to leave Los Angeles FC after just one year with the Major League Soccer club.
The 38-year-old, whose contract had been due to expire in December, will make his last appearance for LAFC in a home match against Vancouver on Sunday.
"I want to thank all of the fans, my teammates and the staff at LAFC for making this an enjoyable stop in my career," Giroud said in a statement.
"I am happy to have played a part in the success of LAFC. From winning a trophy last season to participating in the Club World Cup, this has been a great experience in LA for me and my family."
Giroud scored five goals in 37 appearances for the Californian side after joining from AC Milan in May 2024. He featured in all three of the club's matches at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States - twice as a substitute - but failed to score as LAFC bowed out before the knockout phase.
The 2018 World Cup winner and France's all-time leading scorer is expected to join Ligue 1 club Lille on a free transfer.
"Olivier has been an exemplary professional during his time at LAFC," general manager John Thorrington said. "He brought humility and a winning mentality that helped elevate everyone around him. Olivier has been a tremendous ambassador for the club on and off the field. We are grateful for his contributions."
The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker announced his retirement from the French national team last year after scoring 57 goals in 137 games for France.

And then I had a certain thought process, which was very different from his. Over hours and hours of conversation and trying to make him understand where I came from, eventually, I got him to a place where he sort of trusted me to do certain things with him in regards to how he practises, in regards to trusting certain changes in his tactics, in regards to his stance, where he stands in the crease, what guard he takes,' Nayar added. Nayar didn't give out the secret sauce and the tweaks he made that allowed Rahul to thrive but gave a sneak peek into the approach that he adopted and said, 'All I can tell you is, the way I've always tried to handle things is to first try and address the skill, and then use skill as a medium to address the mind. That's as much as I can tell you in terms of details.' 'It's about using practice to give his mind reassurance with the plan that we have, and what he needs to do to execute it. And then adding a lot of tactical nuances to that so that it gives him a slight edge when he's batting.
