A team of Australian scientists has developed a novel method to reveal hidden HIV in white blood cells
Scientists at Australia's Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne have developed a groundbreaking method to 'wake up" hidden HIV within the human body, a crucial step that could enable their complete removal. And they have used mRNA technology, the same kind used in Pfizer and Moderna's Covid-19 vaccines. Nearly 40 million people are living with HIV worldwide.
One of the main challenges in curing the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) lies in its ability to establish latent reservoirs. These are small numbers of infected cells, primarily resting CD4+ T cells, where the virus integrates its genome but remains dormant and invisible to both the immune system and antiretroviral therapies (ART). While ART can suppress the virus to undetectable levels, it cannot eliminate these hidden reservoirs. If treatment stops, the virus can re-emerge and replicate, necessitating lifelong medication for people living with HIV.
The Australian team discovered a novel way to deliver 'special instructions" to these hidden, latently infected cells. In a study published in Nature Communications, the researchers demonstrated how they packaged mRNA inside novel, microscopic fat-like bubbles called lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), specifically a new design termed 'LNP X".
The key breakthrough was engineering these LNPs to successfully transport the mRNA into the previously hard-to-reach resting CD4+ T cells. Once delivered, the mRNA instructs these cells to 'give up" the dormant virus, forcing it out of hiding and making it visible. This strategy aligns with the long-sought 'kick and kill" approach to HIV cure, where latency-reversing agents 'shock" the virus out of its dormant state, allowing the body's immune system or other therapies to 'kill" the newly exposed infected cells.
Dr Paula Cevaal, a research fellow at the Doherty Institute and co-first author, described the initial results as astonishing, requiring repeated experiments to confirm their accuracy. 'We were overwhelmed by how big the difference was," she noted, emphasising the unprecedented success in revealing the hidden virus. While the research is currently laboratory-based and conducted on cells donated by HIV patients, this innovative method represents a significant step forward. The next crucial phase involves preclinical testing in animal models, followed by human trials to assess safety and efficacy.

This sneaky little bacterium is actually the cause of the infamous plague, including the Black Death that wiped out millions of people in Europe back in the 1300s. Yep, we're talking about that plague. So, what exactly is Yersinia pestis? It's a type of bacteria usually spread to humans through the bites of infected fleas, especially those hitching rides on rats. Madurai: With donations of 30,047 units of blood in 2024, surpassing the 28,810 units in 2023, the blood bank at Government Rajaji Hospital has topped the state in blood donations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Doctors said the hospital has been able to manage 100% of the patients' needs for blood over the past year, thanks to donors from different walks of life, from colleges to organisations. Dr M Sintha, head of the Department of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine, said the blood bank has been selected for an award at national level. "The blood collected is 100% screened and analysed. The hospital has also identified as many as 29 rare 'O' negative and 'Bombay' blood group donors. We are constantly in touch with them for any urgent blood requirements," she added. A total of 208 blood donation camps were organised by GRH last year. Apart from large amounts of donated blood being used for treatment during bleeding in pregnancy cases, emergency trauma cases, and surgeries, the donated blood is also used for treating blood disorders like thalassemia. "After the Covid-19 pandemic, a fear to donate blood was prevalent among people. But, with awareness, the attitude is changing," said A Rajkumar, district secretary, Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Madurai. While student donors were common, they were trying to work with private companies to conduct blood donation camps,. he said. GRH alone needs more than 100 units of blood every day. Many people are keen to donate when they come to know that donating blood is a sign of good health and does them no harm, said Rajkumar who has donated blood 54 times so far. Volunteer blood donors through fan clubs of popular Tamil film actors or political organisations have also come forward for blood donations.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Sunday stated that the street dog feeding programme is a continuation of the initiative launched during the COVID-19 pandemic and is now being expanded in line with the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). The civic body said that it has invited tenders for the supply of balanced meals to be served at designated feeding points across each zone, identified and monitored by the respective Assistant Directors. The initiative is aimed at improving public health by curbing the spread of zoonotic diseases from dogs, addressing dog bite issues, and aiding the city's ongoing efforts in sterilisation and vaccination of street dogs, according to the BBMP. Feeding makes it easier to catch the feral dogs, said the civic body. Of the estimated 2.7 lakh street dogs in Bengaluru, only around 4,000 of the most food-insecure are being targeted under this initiative. Feeding will take place at 100 points per zone, covering 500 dogs per zone, once a day, throughout the year, said the BBMP. The total estimated cost of the project is ₹2.88 crore annually, with a per-dog daily cost of ₹19 (excluding taxes). This includes ₹8 for logistics and ₹11 for food. Meals will consist of boiled chicken, rice, and vegetables, based on veterinary advice. Officials clarified that the term 'biryani' does not appear anywhere in the tender document. 'As dogs are carnivorous, the meals will be nutritionally balanced, consisting of boiled chicken (for protein), rice, and vegetables. This combination is designed to be suitable and easily digestible for street dogs,' the BBMP said. The clarification came amidst criticism from certain sections, including the opposition BJP, flaying the civic body for offering 'chicken biryani' to dogs. Approximately 70% of BBMP wards have achieved sterilisation targets, but feeding is being strategically focused in areas where dog-catching remains difficult or bite incidents persist, according to BBMP.
