PUNE:
AirAsia
Berhad, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capital A Berhad, signed an agreement with Airbus valued at USD12.25 billion for 50 A321XLRs with rights for 20 A321XLRs.
With this agreement, the airline takes a major step towards becoming the world's first low-cost narrow-body network carrier, anchored by its multi-hub strategy.
The aircraft are scheduled for delivery commencing 2028 through 2032.
Witnessed by Prime Minister of Malaysia YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the agreement was signed in Paris between Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, and Christian Scherer, CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft.
Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Advisor & Steward of AirAsia Group said, 'We pioneered low-cost travel in Asia – now, we are taking it to the next level.
AirAsia is on a transformative journey to become the world's first low-cost network carrier. This is about exponential growth, connecting geographies beyond Asean, and making flying even more democratic. We gave people in Asean the opportunity to explore Asia – now we want the world to see Asean, and Asean to see the world.
The A321XLR and A321LR are the game-changers enabling this vision, and we are proud to lead the charge in making our world smaller.

Christian Scherer, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus said: 'We are pleased to confirm this agreement, as AirAsia Group begins its next development chapter. Having resumed its growth trajectory, which we salute and support, the airline is creating solid fleet efficiencies, allowing global network expansion. The A321XLR unlocks new opportunities for AirAsia to launch non-stop flights linking primary and secondary cities all around the globe.
'
The next-generation A321XLRs will operate alongside AirAsia's all-Airbus fleet of A320 Family and A330 aircraft, supporting its long-term strategy to deliver unmatched connectivity across Asia and beyond, while maintaining a low-cost model through improved route economics, enhanced aircraft utilisation and fleet efficiency. AirAsia Group aims to carry 150 million guests annually by 2030, reaching a cumulative total of 1.5 billion guests since inception.
The new fleet plays a pivotal role in this transformation. AirAsia's multi-aircraft strategy enables the airline to match capacity with demand, reduce fuel consumption, and support a sustainable, cost-effective growth model in a highly competitive global landscape. The A321XLR also offers up to 20 per cent lower fuel burn per seat than the Airbus A321neo aircraft, significantly improving emissions performance and operating efficiency.

Aircraft with high-speed internet to debut in Kol-Abu Dhabi sector

Kolkata: Flyers from Kolkata will be the first among 100 cities in over 40 countries on the Etihad Airways network to witness in-flight high-speed WiFi facility across all classes. "The international flying experience will change from Sept 26 when we service the Kolkata-Abu Dhabi sector with a new A321LR aircraft instead of the A320 now,"said Etihad chief revenue and commercial officer, Arik De. The brand new narrow-body Airbus A321LR will offer first-class suites, lie-flat business seats, and an economy cabin with 4K touchscreens and high-speed WiFi. "The WiFi facility will enable flyers to not only work online on their laptops but also view or stream their content from OTT accounts," said De, who will take delivery of the first of 40 A321LR aircraft in two weeks. All flyers can access the free chat feature on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and WeChat. Web-based calls and viewing content online is complementary for first-class passengers but fee-based for others. In the absence of direct flights to Europe or the US, Etihad, Emirates, and Qatar offer connections to the West via Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha. While aviation analysts argued that the lack of business class travellers and low yields have discouraged Indian, European, and American carriers from starting direct flights, Etihad is confident of filling up its premium seats. "There are many successful people from Kolkata settled in the US or Europe who want to ensure that their parents travel in comfort," Etihad VP (global sales & distribution) Javier Alija said, adding that around half of the business class passengers were leisure travellers.

IndiGo expansion plans: Airline may confirm order for 40 more A350 planes; here's what an Airbus official says

Representative image IndiGo is likely to convert its purchase rights for 40 Airbus A350 aircraft into a confirmed order, according to a senior executive at the European aerospace giant. If finalised, this would take the airline's total firm A350 orders to 100. 'They actually will order more aircraft... because they believe they will need those aircraft. And so, the (Indian) market is such that it's easy to appreciate that there is a need for much more advanced aircraft,' said Benoit de Saint-Exupery, executive vice-president of sales at Airbus, according to ET. While no official timeline has been shared, the move is seen as a natural progression after IndiGo converted 30 A350-900 purchase options into firm orders last month. India's largest airline had initially placed a firm order for 30 A350-900 jets in 2024, with deliveries set to begin in mid-2027. The A350-900, a long-range widebody aircraft, is commonly used on intercontinental routes and can fly between 15–18 hours non-stop. It remains unclear whether IndiGo's future orders will include the larger A350-1000 variant, currently ordered only by Air India among Indian carriers. IndiGo's possible order expansion comes as the airline continues to deepen its global footprint. As per PTI, IndiGo has recently launched direct flights from Mumbai to Manchester and Amsterdam and plans to add 10 more overseas destinations by March 2026, including London, Athens, and Copenhagen. The carrier, which operates a fleet of over 400 aircraft, aims to position itself as a 'fit-for-purpose airline' for long-haul operations, CEO Pieter Elbers said during a recent interaction with PTI. To support its growing international ambitions in the near term, IndiGo is currently operating wide-body Boeing 787-9 aircraft on lease from Norse Atlantic Airways. It expects to induct additional leased widebodies later this year while also preparing for the arrival of A321XLR narrow-body long-range aircraft by late 2025 or early 2026. IndiGo's current confirmed order book stands at around 1,400 aircraft, including a landmark order for 500 Airbus A320-family planes placed in June 2023, the largest-ever single order by any airline. Of these, over 455 planes have already been delivered. As per ET, the A350-900 is listed at $308.1 million and the A350-1000 at $355.7 million, though actual contract prices are typically negotiated and undisclosed. Airbus, which has delivered 648 A350s out of 1,391 orders as of May 31, sees strong growth potential in India, not just for large aircraft but also for regional models like the A220. Airbus India & South Asia President Remi Maillard was quoted by ET as saying that India's strategic location and economic growth made it the fastest-growing market across several aerospace segments. 'Defence, space, helicopters, commercial aviation, and the services related to all these... India is the fastest growing market,' he said. Airbus currently sources $1.4 billion worth of parts from India annually and aims to raise that by $600 million 'well before the end of this decade,' Maillard added. Boeing delivers most jets in 18 months with boost from China

Boeing said it delivered 60 aircraft in June, its best showing in 18 months that reflects improvements in its factories and the resumption of US jet exports to China. The June surge put Boeing neck-and-neck with Airbus, which delivered 63 aircraft in the month. Boeing has lagged its rival as it was buffeted by a series of crises this decade.
