Varanasi: Cracking the whip on those in the habit of consuming alcohol on roadside police launched a drive on Wednesday evening. On the very first day, 500 boozers faced legal action, while 303 vehicles were challaned and 26 were seized by the police.
Launching the drive, police commissioner Mohit Agrawal said stern action would be taken against those caught consuming liquor at public places and along roads. The drive was aimed at ensuring public peace, safety and road security, he said. Besides liquor shops in interior areas, even those located along Sigra-Mahmoorganj, Sonarpur, Central Jail, Varuna Bridge and Pandeypur, boozers occupy the road either by standing there to consume liquor or by parking their vehicles, especially from 7 pm till late night.
From Wednesday evening, police teams started raiding points where drinkers gather for liquor party at public places and drive under influence of alcohol. At the end of the first day, officials said major locations were checked, while teams ensured legal action against those
drinking in public
and driving drunk. Vehicles were seized, and fines were imposed on those violating traffic rules. Police initiated action against 294 persons under Police Act, while 173 were booked under sections of BNS. Police also seized 26 vehicles and fined 303 vehicles. tnn

Representative Image LUDHIANA: Ludhiana police on Saturday morning arrested a person for allegedly raping a minor student after offering her a lift in his Innova car and giving her a cold drink laced with an intoxicant substance. The accused, aged 38 years, is a zamindar (landowner) and lived in the neighbourhood of the victim's family. The girl's mother told the cops that her daughter is 17 years old and is studying in class 12 in a govt school in a village under Jamalpur police station jurisdiction. She alleged that when her daughter did not return home on Friday, she went out to look for her and saw that she was lying unconscious in the back street of a govt school. The complainant asked her daughter about the reason for her state. Her daughter told her that she was walking to school in the morning when the accused, who lives in the neighbourhood, came in his Innova car. She added that, as per her daughter, the accused made her sit in the car on the pretext of dropping her at school. The victim's mother told the cops that instead of taking her daughter to school, the accused took her to another place. There, the miscreant mixed some narcotic substance in her cold drink and offered her the same. She alleged that after drinking it, her daughter became unconscious and the accused raped her. The complainant said that the accused then fled from the spot in his car after threatening her daughter before throwing her on the back side of the govt school. She later informed the police about the matter.\ On being informed, cops from Jamalpur police station reached the spot and started a probe into the matter. Police later booked the accused under section 64 of BNS (rape) and sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. SHO Jamalpur police station, Inspector Balwinder Kaur, said that after registering the case, police arrested the accused from the area on Saturday morning. She added that the accused is married and has two children, including a officials said that the accused would keep a bad eye on the girl while the family lived on rent at another place and later shifted to the current location because of that. They added that the victim sat in the car of the accused as he was an acquaintance of the family. The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau of Haryana on Thursday arrested Dr Jai Bhagwan, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Palwal, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. The Gurgaon unit of the Vigilance department also recovered an additional Rs 3 lakh in cash from a cupboard at the doctor's official residence in Palwal during a raid. Dr Bhagwan has been booked under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 308(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) that deals with punishment for extortion, at the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau Police Station in Faridabad. According to the complainant who runs Sunrise Trauma Hospital in Palwal along with three others, Dr Bhagwan had been threatening to shut down their hospital, citing operational deficiencies. The CMO allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh to allow the hospital to continue functioning, claiming he needed to pay off other officials. The complainant stated that he had already paid Rs 6 lakh about 20 days ago and an additional Rs 1 lakh on Wednesday. Dr Bhagwan then demanded the remaining Rs 8 lakh, of which the complainant arranged Rs 1 lakh for payment Thursday night, leading to the sting operation by the Vigilance Bureau. The Vigilance department has urged the public to report bribe demands by government officials to the toll-free numbers 1800-180-2022 or 1064 for prompt action. In January, the Haryana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) had recovered Rs 3.65 crore and gold worth Rs 6.5 lakh from the residence of a retired Haryana Development and Panchayat department official. The recovery came after the ACB conducted a raid at the Panchkula residence of the official in connection with a scam worth Rs 50 crore and arrested the accused, identified as Shamsher Singh, who had retired on November 30 last year. ACB officials had said that currency notes were found in a bed and almirahs at Shamsher's house at Panchkula Sector 28. The ACB had registered a case on January 24 this year against junior officials of Haryana Development and Panchayat department posted in Faridabad apart from a outsourcing services firm. An audit report of Comptroller of Auditor General (CAG) had earlier found that funds were disbursed to the Palwal District Development and Panchayat Officer for the financial years 2023-24 and 2024-25 without approval of Chief Accounts Officer of the panchayat department.

New Delhi/Bhopal/Raipur: In a sweeping action exposing deep-rooted corruption in medical college regulation and accreditation, the CBI arrested six people, including three doctors, and busted a racket involving self-styled godman Rawatpura Sarkar, former UGC Chairman D.P. Singh and a network of officials and middlemen, an official said on Saturday. The muli-state corruption racket forced the CBI to raided more than 40 locations in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has named 34 and one unidentified person in its first information report (FIR) registered on June 30, under section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Sections 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) that deal with criminal conspiracy and bribery of public servants. The FIR names of several high-ranking officials, intermediaries, and representatives of private medical colleges across India. The CBI recently arrested six people including three doctors in the case of preparing a report in favour of Shri Rawatpura Sarkar Medical College (SRIMSR), Nava Raipur of Chhattisgarh. The accused allegedly took a bribe of Rs 55 lakh from the college management for giving a favourable report despite shortcomings in the college facilities. The accused were arrested red-handed include Dr Manjappa CN, Dr Ashok Shelke, Dr Satish A, Dr Chaitra MS and her husband Ravichandran along with Atul Kumar Tiwari. The FIR registered by CBI says that Rs 55 lakh bribe was given through hawala. Apart from this, CBI also registered a case against Ravishankar Maharaj alias Rawatpura Sarkar - the chairman of the college. The CBI had received a concrete information that some officials of the Ministry of Health and the National Medical Commission (NMC), in connivance with the representatives of private medical colleges, were committing widespread irregularities in the recognition process. These officials ignored the rules and got many private medical colleges recognised illegally and took a huge bribe in return, said the input. According to the CBI FIR, some public servants in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Medical Commission (NMC) colluded with private individuals and institutions to subvert the statutory inspection processes governing medical education. The offences reportedly occurred across Raipur, Bangalore, Indore, Udaipur, Delhi and other locations during 2024–25. Among the prominent names named in the FIR are Dr. Jitu Lal Meena, Joint Director at the National Health Authority, Dr. Manjappa CN, Professor at Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences and member of the NMC inspection team, and Mayur Raval, Registrar of Geetanjali University, Udaipur. Also named are senior functionaries from Shri Rawatpura Sarkar Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SRIMSR), including Chairman Shri Ravi Shankar Ji Maharaj alias Rawatpura Sarkar and Director Atul Kumar Tiwari. The report reveals a staggering network of bribery, falsification of records, and leaks of confidential inspection schedules. It states that 'medical colleges were provided advance information about statutory inspections and names of assessors,' which enabled them to fabricate compliance, hire proxy faculty, admit fictitious patients, and even tamper with biometric attendance systems.
