Cork and Dublin to host Republic of Ireland Under-21 Euro qualifiers

Irish Examiner12 hours ago
Cork and Dublin will each host one of the Republic of Ireland Under-21s's opening two UEFA European Championship qualifiers.
The young Boys in Green will play their first home game in 11 months when they take on Andorra in Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday, September 9 before they will then host Slovakia a month later in Turner's Cross on Friday, October 10.
Ireland have been drawn against back-to-back European champions England as well as Slovakia, Moldova, Kazakhstan and Andorra in Group D of qualification.
Jim Crawford's side played in front of huge crowds of 5,000 plus on three occasions previously with fans getting the chance to see now senior internationals caps Festy Ebosele, Andrew Moran, Rocco Vata, Sinclair Armstrong and Killian Phillips in action.
And Crawford admits he is hoping for similar attendances this time around.
'After playing so many games away from home in the last year we're really excited to be back on Irish soil with a new generation of Ireland Under-21s internationals," he said.
'The support we've had in the last few campaigns in Cork and Dublin has been immense. The stats show we're one of the best supported Under-21s international teams in Europe which only reaffirms how much our fans come out to support football in this country.
'I look at those special occasions in Tallaght against Sweden, Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina and the games in Cork against Iceland, Türkiye and Italy and on each occasion the crowd has got us over the line.
"They're a young team, with many faces people will recognise from the League of Ireland. The league is seeing a huge surge in crowds and these games are an opportunity for those fans and the communities in both cities to come out and see our boys represent our country.'

Ben Healy takes time to savour being top of the pile

Ben Healy has showed an impeccable sense of timing so far at this year's Tour de France. First he attacked an eight man breakaway at just the right time on Stage 6 for his first ever Tour stage win and then he lead and EF Education-EasyPost assault on Stage 10 to become the fourth Irish cyclist to wear the yellow jersey. But the real trick? Taking that race lead just before a rest day so he had the time and space to savour his achievement. Which is exactly what he's been doing as he wore the fabled yellow jersey on the rest day in the south of France. "(I've been) maximising the time in the yellow jersey," he said told Shane Stokes on 2fm's Game On. "It was not even a proper jersey yet, it was the podium jersey from yesterday. But I wasn't going to pass that opportunity up. "We stopped in a cafe in Toulouse, and it was just a mob of fans, which was something that I've never, never experienced before, so I'm just soaking it all up. "It's just been a bit of a wild one, really, it's just unbelievable. If you told me that this would have been my Tour de France so far, before the Tour, I just wouldn't have believed you." Healy started Stage 10 day 3' 55" down on UAE Team Emirates XRG rider Tadej Pogacar in yellow, but took advantage of a favourable stage profile to get himself into a large breakaway, which managed to stay well clear of the peloton as GC favourites Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard failed to muster a fight until late in the stage. Reflecting on the both his and his team's performance he admitted that they took a big gamble, which paid off handsomely. "On the stage it was honestly a really great feeling to start with when we played the breakaway formation perfectly," he said. "All four of us got in pretty comfortably really and then it was just a matter of keeping the breakaway rolling. "When we realized the gap was actually going out and UAE were riding quite a different race to what they normally would, that's when our mentality changed and we really started to drive the break. "From that point onwards I did really start to get more and more nervous because I really believed that I had a chance to go into yellow and that it was something that we could pull off. "But for sure it was a risky game to play because I think making that break, it really put the onus on us to do the work. "When it got to 25k to go that's when I just had to go, 'right this is it all or nothing,', and really go for yellow and the last climb I paced really well. "Thankfully things fell my way and it was honestly just a feeling of relief when it happened." The 24-year-old now holds a 29 second lead over Pogacar in the general classification but with the Slovenian likely to strike back on Wednesday, Healy is just enjoying being top of pile. "I just want to honour the jersey the best I possibly can," he said. "I know what I'm up against, so it's going to be hard. But I'll give it my all, that's for sure."

Ex-Shamrock Rvs and Inter Milan youngster scores in trial game for Sligo Rovers

Roma youngster Kevin Zefi played and scored in a friendly for Sligo Rovers on Tuesday night. The former Shamrock Rovers and Inter Milan prospect featured as one of two trialists in John Russell's side as they took on League One outfit Mansfield Town at The Showgrounds. Zefi scored the Bit O' Red's only goal in a 3-1 defeat. His appearance sparked hopes among the Rovers faithful that they might land a player considered one of Irish football's hottest properties on a short-term deal. Zefi remains under contract with Roma, but has been linked with a move away from the Serie A giants. He has admirers within the Scottish Premiership, the English Football League and across the continent. The Dubliner arrived at Shamrock Rovers from St Kevin's Boys and, in 2020, he became the youngest ever League of Ireland goalscorer when he netted for the Hoops' second team in the First Division. He moved to Inter Milan in the summer of 2021 and left for Roma in January 2024. Sean Gannon's incredible Euro record as Shels prepare for showdown with Linfield

On one hand, it's a relatively inexperienced Shelbourne dressing room when it comes to big nights in Europe. On the other hand, Sean Gannon is back from suspension and is ready to add a fresh chapter to a most remarkable Irish footballing tale. The 33-year-old is expected to get the nod in tonight's Champions League second-leg against Linfield, and make his 58th appearance in continental competition. And 16 of those have come in the group stages - a level that Shels are desperate to reach this year. Victory over Linfield would inch that dream closer to reality, as it would earn them a second qualifying round spot in the Champions League, and shots at both the Europa League and Conference League. Defeat and they would be dumped straight into the Conference League second round - a much steeper climb to the league phase. From his European debut in the Europa League against Luxembourg side Jeunesse Esch 11 years ago, Gannon has come a long way. There have been 15 wins, 14 draws and 28 defeats, and those three cracks at the coveted group stages. Famous victories have come with Dundalk away to Hajduk Split (2014), BATE Borisov (2016), and that historic first ever group stage win against Maccabi Tel Aviv in Tallaght. Dundalk pulled off another first in that famous 2016 campaign when they picked up a point away from AZ Alkmaar in their opening group game. Prior to that, they went to Legia Warsaw and, for much of the game, were just a goal away from the Champions League group stages. There was honour in the defeats to Zenit St Petersburg (1-2 home and away) and to Arsenal in the 2020 group stages, when they played at an empty Emirates (0-3) and Aviva Stadium (2-4) during Covid. Gannon has yet to find the net in his 57 appearances so far, of which 48 were as a starter. Wouldn't tonight be the perfect night for the versatile defender to finally get off the mark? If you're curious, you can read our Privacy Notice . Prior to his red card away to Gibraltar side St Joseph's last year, which earned him the three-game ban that forced him to sit out last week's game, he had been booked just twice in Europe. Ironically, he was joined in the Tolka Park stand by his former Dundalk teammate Chris Shields, who was serving a ban for Linfield. The pair will go toe-to-toe tonight in a battle of two of Irish football's most experienced European campaigners. 'I actually shared a lot of good times with Chris,' he said last night, sitting alongside manager Joey O'Brien at the pre-match press conference. 'I played with him for many years, he's a great character, he was a big loss for the league. 'But he is flying up here and we know the value he is going to add to the game for Linfield, he has got huge European experience. 'He is a good friend of mine, it was good to see him last week, it was mad the two of us being suspended for the same game, but he can still chat, he burnt the ears off me last week in Tolka! 'He's a great lad and a huge asset for them.' Gannon's return gives O'Brien a fully-fit squad for the game tonight. 'It's been surreal, to be honest, the longest suspension ever,' he said of the three-game ban, handed down for his part in a melee deep into injury-time in the second-leg against St Joseph's. 'Obviously it's great to be back involved, it was hard watching on. I don't know how supporters do it every week, my nerves would be gone. 'It's good to be back involved. There's a great buzz around the group and I'm delighted to be back and available.' A man of his European experience will be vital in the Shels dressing room tonight. He has echoed his manager's sentiments regarding pressure - or the lack of - surrounding such a crucial game. 'I think pressure is probably not a word we'd be using, I think it's motivation,' said the former Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers man. 'The rewards for getting through as a player are huge and obviously these are the games you want to be playing in. 'Every player in the league wants to be playing here in the Champions League, and we are representatives of our league. 'It's not a pressure, it's motivation for us. I have been lucky enough to be a part of games like this and I know how valuable they are to your career and to look back on in many years to come. 'But it wouldn't be a pressure for us, it's a motivation. There are big rewards and a chance to showcase your talent.'
