Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday announced a new statewide initiative called '' (Police to Every Home), aimed at fostering trust and addressing issues at the grassroots level.Speaking after a review meeting with senior police officials at the City Police Commissioner's Office, the minister said the initiative is part of the broader 'people-friendly policing' framework. Under this program, beat constables will visit homes regularly to listen to citizens' concerns, resolve minor disputes amicably, and rebuild public confidence in law enforcement.'This is the first time such a model will be implemented across Karnataka. Regular interaction with residents will help change public perception and create a sense of accessibility and transparency,' said Parameshwara. The review also covered key law and order concerns. Officials have been directed to increase police presence in public spaces, especially during peak hours, and actively engage with citizens to encourage community participation in crime prevention. The minister emphasised the importance of police attending Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings in schools and colleges to discuss drug abuse, traffic safety, and legal awareness.Raising concern over rising reports of Khaji Nyaya (Kangaroo Court)-like activities in police stations, where civil disputes are being 'settled' unofficially, Parameshwara warned that such practices are breeding grounds for corruption. He issued strict warnings to the force, stating that any officer caught engaging in corrupt practices or unauthorised dispute settlements would face stringent disciplinary action.Referring to the recent meeting chaired by the Chief Minister and other top officials, Parameshwara said a clear accountability mechanism will be implemented for civic infrastructure failures. Engineers and department heads responsible for poor maintenance or negligence leading to accidents will be booked under the relevant sections of the law.The Home Minister reiterated that Bengaluru will not be allowed to become a haven for drug peddlers. Jurisdictional police will be held directly accountable for anyin their areas. 'There will be no leniency in drug cases. Officers will be questioned and action will be taken if peddling is reported under their watch,' he warned. To enhance women's safety, the city has deployed over 9,000 new CCTV cameras at vulnerable locations, connected to a central command centre for 24/7 monitoring.

Let us provide children with a nurturing environment, says judge at book launch on child protection laws in Ballari

'Merely enacting laws for child protection is not enough; we must also ensure a conducive environment for their overall development,' said K.G. Shanthi, Principal District and Sessions Judge and chairperson of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), on Saturday. She was speaking after releasing the book Laws for the Protection of Children at a programme, jointly organised by the DLSA, READS organisation, the School Education and Literacy, and the Forest Departments in Ballari. 'Children are akin to divine beings. We must provide a safe and nurturing environment in houses, schools, and neighbourhoods to help them thrive. It is unfortunate that issues such as child labour, begging, human trafficking, child marriage, and sexual abuse continue to persist in our society. Poverty and a lack of education are the main reasons for this,' she said. Ms. Shanti stressed that the role of NGOs was crucial in child protection. The newly launched book, published in collaboration with READS and various departments, would be made available in schools and libraries. 'Children must be made aware of child marriage and POCSO Act through daily school assemblies. They must take a pledge against child marriage,' she said. Highlighting the importance of environmental responsibility, she added: 'Under the campaign One Tree for Every Child, One Forest for Every School, each school should plant trees and children should be made caretakers of those trees. Just as laws are essential for children's rights, trees are essential for a healthy environment.' She also paid tribute to fallen soldiers on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas. Deputy Commissioner Prashanth Kumar Mishra, who presided over the event, said greater emphasis was needed on educational development in Kalyana Karnataka. 'Awareness of laws protecting children must spread. Let us all join hands to eliminate child marriage in the district,' he said. READS executive director C. Tippeshappa delivered the introductory remarks. Former member of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights H.C. Raghavendra introduced the book, while Janardhan, professor, Department of Development Studies, Kannada University, Hampi, conducted a workshop. As part of the One Tree for Every Child campaign, dignitaries planted saplings on the court premises before the formal event. The programme was attended by DLSA member secretary and senior civil judge Rajesh N. Hosamane, Assistant Conservator of Forests (Ballari division) Toshan Kumar, various district judges, officers from Education, Labour and Police Departments, DCPO and Childline staff, anganwadi supervisors, para-legal volunteers and heads of NGOs.

Stampede report recommendations to be implemented in phased manner, says home minister

The government will implement the recommendations of the one-man judicial commission report on the June 4 stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium in a phased manner, home minister G Parameshwara said on Friday. The tragedy, which occurred during Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations, claimed 11 lives and left over 70 injured. Stampede report recommendations to be implemented in phased manner, says home minister The government's decision comes a day after the cabinet formally accepted the findings of the report submitted by retired high court judge John Michael D'Cunha. The cabinet has now decided to initiate legal and departmental proceedings against several individuals and private organisations, including the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), DNA Entertainment Networks, and RCB. 'The government has primarily accepted the report by justice John Michael D'Cunha on the stampede tragedy. We will try to implement the recommendations one after the other. The ongoing cases against RCB and DNA will continue. The officers involved have already been suspended and subjected to one form of punishment. Now, the government has decided to conduct a departmental inquiry,' Parameshwara said, speaking to reporters in Bengaluru. He added that the inquiry would be administrative in nature and handled internally by the state. 'The decision has been made after internal discussions,' he said. The cabinet note names KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, former KSCA president A Shankar, former treasurer Jayaram ES, RCB vice president Rajesh Menon, and DNA managing director Venkatavardhan as people against whom legal action will be initiated. While the cabinet did not outline specific legal steps, officials confirmed that action would follow based on the findings. The report has recommended a series of measures to improve crowd safety at large public events. These include introducing conditions that must be fulfilled before granting permissions and issuing guidelines for crowd management. The state government has agreed to consider these suggestions seriously in its phased implementation plan. Parameshwara clarified that the report does not name any political leaders, including Congress MLC K Govindaraju, who was removed as the political advisor to chief minister Siddaramaiah shortly after the incident. 'The report specifically mentions RCB, DNA, KSCA, and certain police officers,' he said. The government's announcement comes amid growing political friction, with the Opposition BJP rejecting the findings of the commission. BJP leaders have accused the Congress-led government of attempting to sidestep accountability and using the report to shift the blame. Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka said, 'The state government should hand over this case to a judicial inquiry led by a sitting judge and deliver justice to those who lost their lives.' Responding to the BJP's criticism, Parameshwara said the government has always encouraged the Opposition to offer constructive feedback. 'The BJP is in the opposition. We have always asked them to offer constructive criticism and submit suggestions, which we are willing to consider in the interest of the state and its people. They continue to criticise us, and we can't help it. It is natural for the opposition to criticise the ruling party. We did the same when we were in opposition. I cannot ask them not to criticise,' he said.
